Empathy seems to be in short supply nowadays, judging by how we cope with the main challenges of our times. Th ere is despair and devastation in so many parts of the world, yet eff orts to invite empathy with the victims from those who are better off and can help oft en have disappointing results. Consider, among the many examples available, appeals for donations for Syria, which present the desperate situation of the refugees to convince all of us to help them. Here is but one example, an appeal from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (unhcr) focusing on a special category of victims:

Of course, I don’t mean interpretation in the broadest sense, the sense in which Nietzsche (rightly) says, “Th ere are no facts, only interpretations.” By interpretation, I mean here a conscious act of the mind which illustrates a certain code, certain “rules” of interpretation. Directed to art, interpretation means plucking a set of elements (the X, the Y, the Z, and so forth) from the whole work. Th e task of interpretation is virtually one of translation. Th e interpreter says, Look, don’t you see that X is really— or, really means— A? (Sontag 1966: 5; emphasis added)
