Overreading Illness: Interpretation and Narrative Absence

Abstract:Narrative medicine is an interpretative practice. Endorsing close reading as its signature method, narrative medicine encourages the reader or listener to pay close attention to narrative gaps, absences, and silences and to question what has been left out as a salient but secret element of the patient's story. In this paper I interrogate these principles and practices by suggesting that narrative medicine's concern with what the patient doesn't say poses ethical and epistemological risks and responsibilities. In foregrounding absence, practitioners of close reading encourage an essential mistrust that risks overreading silences as unspoken stories. Drawing on criticism of overinterpretation in literary theory, including the works of Jameson, Sontag, and Eco, and a recent work of French fiction, Mélissa Da Costa's Tout le bleu du ciel (2020; All the blue of the sky), I argue that narrative absence may not always present an invitation to interpret but rather demand humility in the face of insurmountable difference and ambiguity. Ultimately, I suggest an interpretative humility that exercises caution and vigilance in the interpretative act, not only because the interpretation may be wrong or incomplete but because it may be entirely unnecessary.

Illness or Identity: Visceral Sense-Making in Pregnancy Loss Narratives
Pub Date : 2019-12-01 DOI: 10.1353/stw.2019.0005

Abstract:This article explores how patients who are not themselves unhealthy assign meaning to experiences of pregnancy loss through storytelling. Pregnancy loss is frequently attributed to sporadic chromosomal abnormalities rather than a medically identifiable abnormality in male or female reproductive functions. While many medical narratives center on a diseased or ill body, pregnancy loss narratives require making sense of a body that is neither of these things. Further, pregnancy loss is often medically understood to be a normal and expected reproductive experience, which deemphasizes the physical and emotional realities accompanying pregnancy loss. Studying narratives shared online to the social media platform Reddit, I track the role and presence of bodies within these narrative accounts. I offer visceral sense-making as a way of accounting for the material and discursive meaning-making that occurs within these stories of pregnancy loss, and the ways these processes are felt and described as deeply within the body.

Rereading Literary Affordances in Narrative Medicine Pedagogy
Pub Date : 2019-12-01 DOI: 10.1353/stw.2019.0009
Yianna Liatsos
Abstract:This paper takes up the venture of critical medical humanities to reread the workings and uses of narrative in narrative medicine pedagogy. Informed by philosophical and literary theory, the paper addresses the kind of work aesthetic experience performs in the pedagogical model of narrative medicine and considers the effects of distancing, relational, and close reading affordances attributed to literary narratives. The objective of this paper is to support the implementation of literary training in medical education by rethinking fiction's compatibility with narrative medicine's pedagogical goals, while considering how the "entangled" perspective that critical medical humanities advocates may, in fact, be already at play in narrative medicine by virtue of its turn to aesthetic experience—perhaps inadvertently, and certainly as a potential.
