Epistle XXVIII of the Rasâ'il Ikhwân al-Safâ' (Brethren of Purity, 10th Century AD) is dedicated to the limits of human knowledge. This epistle, which is part of the second section ("On physical and corporel sciences"), may qualify as a treatise of epistemology in its own right, as it tackles such typical questions as innate versus acquired knowledge, or, more originally, the somhhow mean position of man with respect to the rest of the "knowing creatures" in the universe. It is also the place for a vehement admonition against the excess of free-thinking as well as a strong appeal to reconcile, whrever possible, the noblest achievements of ancient philosophy with the divine truth as revealed by the sacred texts. The French translation to be found here - the first of the epistle into any European language - is given with a few notes as well as with a brief overall presentation.

Like the other medieval Syriac grammars, the grammar of Bar Zubi is not aware of the notion of root. This paper shows that a grammar which makes uses only of concrete radicals appearing in the language, still allows a verbal classification and makes it possible to represent the relationship existing between the categories. The study deals with the formation of the active and of the passive in that perspective and announces a larger work of edition and of analysis of the grammar of Bar Zubi.

In Rene Lebrun's contribution, the lector finds some remarks relating to the Egyptian intendant Urkhiya, the toponyms Pergame and the Aleian plain, the Anatolian gods Kakasbos and Trikasbos, and a philological observation on the new anthroponym Pumuwaza inscribed on a recently discovered Hittite seal. The contribution of Jan Tavernier focuses on three small fragments of the Atrahasis Epos, found in the Hittite capital. They are commented upon and some general remarks on the Hattusa versions of this Mesopotamian literary composition are presented.
