The present study determined the willingness to pay for the conservation of the biodiversity (WTP) of the Yanachaga-Chemillén National Park (YChNP), applying the contingent valuation method, in hypothetical scenarios of conserving 6, 9 or 12 species that guaranteed protection of 50 % of the functionality of the ecosystems of this place. It was found that the WTP was determined by the functional characteristics that key species play in the resilience of the PNYCh ecosystems. For this reason, similar studies should evaluate the option of preferring the use of functionality instead of indicators based, for example, on the number of species.

The producers' response to the Guarantee Price Program was analyzed through three complementary approaches: design, results, and producers´ perception. The study shows a deficient design from the construction of the problem tree and the Matrix of Indicators for Results; a low participation of producers, reflected in an idle installed capacity of 69% of the collection centers; and disinterest of the beneficiaries due to causes attributable to the program, such as the distance from the collection centers. This work contributes to the recognition of the initial problems of the policy, and thus to advance in their solution.

The objective is to investigate which are the drivers of the formation of inter-organizational cooperation networks that contribute to the achievement of innovation performance in rural areas. Regarding the methodological aspects, the research chose Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) and Content Analysis for research with the leaders of research, development and innovation networks of the most important agri-food technologies in Brazil and Spain. Our findings suggest that relevant reasons that influence the performance of the innovation are Legitimacy, Flexibility and Efficiency.

The salinization of drinking water in the coastal zone is a growing concern for water security. Our objective was to know the perception of water salinization for domestic use through semistructured interviews in Puerto Madero, Mexico, a border community with high levels of migration, and then to contrast it with quantitative salinity data. The population of this coastal locality depends substantially on artisan wells without government monitoring. Although no wells were classified as saline, results show that artisan wells that present extreme values of dissolved-solid concentration have impact in human health conditions.

This paper examines the influence of concerns regarding Amazon deforestation in the Peruvian oil palm policy. The research consisted of the analysis of discourses underlying oil palm policy and of related actors. The results show a paradigm change influenced by the referred concerns. This influence occurred presumably through oil palm farmers, who led a recent policy’s update process while promoting their insertion to green markets. The results also present the absolute necessity of including indigenous peoples in oil palm policy and other policies in the Peruvian Amazon.

Multivariate and ordered Probit models were used to study the determinants of the adoption and extent of adoption of agronomic practices among cacao farmers in Nariño, Colombia, with data from 353 farmers in the mountain region. Results suggest that farmers’ adoption decisions are made on a joint basis, further validating the use of a multivariate approach. The presence of illegal crops creates strong disincentives that affect the possibility of more significant technological improvements. Adequate access to agricultural technical assistance strongly increases rates of adoption. Evidence suggests that efforts are necessary to better target resource-poor farmers.

This study investigates the differences in the interaction and perception of the environmental problems in the Titicaca National Reserve between households in the rural and urban areas of its buffer-zone. We conducted semi-structured interviews and surveys and a test of difference. Results show significant differences in the socioeconomic profile of the households. Rural interaction is associated with the use of the resources as a source of food and livestock, while in the urban area it is associated to recreation. The pollution of the lake was the main environmental problem identified. However, rural households perceive the overexploitation of natural resources.

This work aims to understand landowners’ participation decision dynamics in an urban Payment for Environmental Services scheme under different payment scenarios. Based on the Theory of Planned Behavior, we formulated a simulation model at the individual level with interaction graphs, conformed by diverse agents in attributes, and parameterized with data of a Colombian Andes zone. The results confirm the relevance of the differentiation processes in the payment offer. This work constitutes the first approach to simulate participation in PES schemes in an urban context.

SDG goals of ending poverty and achieving Zero Hunger must address the nexus of a transformational shift in the Food and Nutrition Security (FNS) Agenda, integrating more sustainable food systems, territorial development, sustainable infrastructure, fiscal and economic elements to robust social protection schemes. By considering Family Farming government expenditure budget, the slowing and stalled economic growth, and political and fiscal policy developments. We discuss Brazil's high-level government budgetary interventions, the governance and institutional contexts affecting food security as indicators of how aggressive budgetary and institutional measures have negatively impacted the nation's social protection policy environment, resilience, and sustainable development perspectives.

Important changes that have reconfigured the rural world in recent decades include the abandonment of inner and remote territories, and the growth of the immigrant workforce. Pastoralism provides an intriguing perspective on these processes, as it embodies the contradictions of an agricultural practice increasingly appreciated but decreasingly practiced. This work questions the contribution immigrant shepherds are making to the generational renewal of pastoralism in the Euro-Mediterranean context. The results point that their relevance in terms of generational renewal are limited, and mostly context specific.
