Rurality is being reduced to the phenomenon of depopulation, producing debates around proposals for action focused on a specific type of rurality. Mostly they are based on the conception of the rural as a space at the service of the functions assigned from the city. In this paper we analyze opposing discourses in the proposals, but these share the functional conception where part of the causes of depopulation may be found. We propose to assume another way of conceiving rurality as a social expression in a context of low demographic density, diverse and in continuous adaptation to the changing reality.

This article explores interdisciplinarity in social innovation facing rural depopulation. For this purpose, we analyse the diversity of disciplines involved in the social innovation initiatives registered in the database of the SIMRA research project that are addressing demographic challenges. The results of this analysis show a significant level of integration of scientific knowledge in the social innovation facing depopulation, which evidences the need for interdisciplinarity in fighting depopulation and also its analysis, as well as the existing margin for more scientific fields to participate in this type of social innovation.

Nationally representative data of farm households from India Human Development Surveys (IHDS) conducted in 2004-05 and 2011-12 are explored. This article analyzes the effects of income diversification in non-farm enterprises on farm households’ income and consumption expenditure in rural India. Panel probit models were built to examine the determinants of income diversification while propensity score matching was used to account selection bias resulting from unobserved factors and controls for structural differences between diversified and undiversified farm households. The results suggest that by engaging in non-farm enterprises, rural farm households make positive gains in farm income and consumption expenditure.

There is a growing consensus on the need to propose specific policies to face rural depopulation. This article applies fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) to define the presence or absence in each municipality of the conditions leading to the presence or absence of depopulation. We also perform Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis (ESDA) of population growth to identify hotspots of rural depopulation. The methodologies prove useful to evaluate and guide regional policies that address depopulation processes in the context of a relatively urbanized region.

This paper analyses aspects of a factor that contributes to rural depopulation: the process of economic concentration in the argentine Pampas, which was accelerated in the last thirty years of intense productive progress. First, we proceed to quantify the process, using inequality indicators for the sub-period that has census data (1988-2002) and summarizing the information available for the period 2003-2018. Secondly, an exercise of construction of cost structures (differentiating according to the size of the farms) is carried out, exposing the mechanisms that generate the displacement of ‘chacareras’ farms.

The objective of this paper is to obtain the monetary value of ecosystem services provided by the Turia Natural Park (TNP). This paper proposes the use of the Analytic Multicriteria Valuation Method (AMUVAM) by replacing the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) with the Analytic Network Process (ANP), since the ANP method allows to analyze interdependence relationships between the services provided by a system. The results express that the economic value of the ecosystem services associated to the TNP ranges between 163,946,752 € and 481,549,597 €. The results reveal distinct patterns in the valuation of the existing services due to ethical issues.

This research analyses consumer behaviour related to the purchase of handmade and locally made agrifood products in Western Honduras (Occidental Region). A relational model was built, and structural equation modelling (SEM) by means of variance-based partial least squares (PLS) path modelling was applied. The existence of a mediator variable was also examined. The results showed that the consumption of handmade and locally made agrifood products increases for consumers who read nutrition labels and health claim information and for those with higher income and who are younger.

The Grain for Green (GfG) is the largest reforestation program of the world. It involved payments to farmers to convert their marginal farmland. Many farmers decided to migrate. This paper looks at some of the household features associated with migration by GfG-participants, and the importance of remittances to those who remained behind. Fieldwork for this research was carried out in Pengshui County in Chongqing Municipality. Several variables affect migration, including education, land ownership and household size. For most households, remittances consist of over 90 percent of all household incomes, but the amount remitted tends to level off when it reaches a certain size, regardless of the number of household members who migrated.

Informal economy is particularly prevalent in small-scale farming, yet little attention has been paid to it so far. This article aims to contribute to a further understanding of this phenomenon. A survey of family farmers located in the Metropolitan Region of Santiago, Chile, was conducted. The data collected were processed using descriptive and multivariate techniques, factor and cluster analysis. Results show that farmers perceive formalization as a complex process which entails unpleasant obligations, and that they do not consider it necessary. There are some distinctions, however, that allow two clusters to be identified: “Favorable” (18.82 %) and “Reluctant” (81.18 %).

The objective was to determine the willingness to pay a price premium from consumers for artisanal chocolates. The data was obtained from a survey of household heads. Artisanal chocolate incorporates knowledge transmitted by generations, which resulted in the possibility of adding value. 55 % of the interviewed know and consume bitter and semi-bitter handmade chocolates, and 92% would be willing to pay a premium. The significant variables (p ≤ 0.05) that explain the DAP a premium are schooling, household income, the quality of the cocoa and the type of toast.
