Abstract:This article argues that the concept of chivalric adventure developed in opposition to rulers' attempts to monopolize violence. Adventuring protagonists frequently defeat opponents who accuse them of breaking laws limiting feuding. The defeat of these opponents represents a defeat of these new laws and an assertion of noble privilege. [JSM]

His ascent impressed Wynkyn de Worde into choosing a woodcut focused on Aggravain and his scheming for his 1529 edition of the Morte Darthur. [DTH]
