Acquiring material in public libraries is a core library activity to fulfill the unique needs of the reader's community. The present study aims to explore the trends of monograph acquisition in public libraries. The population consists of the four major public libraries of Lahore. A case study approach has been used to achieve the objectives of the study. Research is based on primarily the personal visits of the researcher to the acquisition departments of these libraries in order to collect data. Structured interviews were carried out with acquisition librarians to investigate the process of purchasing. The analysis of data reveals that a high ratio of Urdu language books has been purchased during the last decade, literature and religion being the major purchase area, whereas, art and architecture, pure sciences, and languages are the most neglected. The findings further revealed that the studied libraries have primarily been using traditional and informal techniques for acquiring material.

This article outlines the use of a collection mapping model of collection assessment in which data visualization tools were utilized in order to provide a unified portrait of a complicated multi-disciplinary collection located in several different physical locations across the Libraries of the University of California Riverside. Through the use of freely-available data visualization software, the massive amount of data generated by collection-centered inventory of the Libraries' Latin American Studies collection can be assessed in a number of different dimensions, clearly illustrating the collection's strengths to stakeholders both within and outside of the libraries.

After repeated efforts to streamline their gifts-in-kind selection and processing, librarians still face concerns over the small percent of books added and the amount of staff time required. The primary problem is that the purpose of the gifts program is to add reasonable and relevant materials to the collection, and too little of what is received fits that description. Resulting questions include whether the library needs to continue to receive gifts, and if so, whether there are ways to identify which books might be worth adding to the collection. To answer these questions, the authors reviewed circulation records of gift books acquired over a seven-year period and compared those lists with required reading lists for classes, interlibrary loan reports, and lists of financial donors. Results indicate that gift books do circulate, and that required readings lists can be helpful in gift book selection. Librarians are also encouraged to analyze circulation rates by subject on a periodic basis to hone their selection of gifts.

This study analyzes the citations of 50 Doctor of Nursing Practice dissertations as part of an academic library's preparation to support a university's new Doctor of Nursing Practice program. The study demonstrates that peer-reviewed journals are by a large margin the information resource used the most in preparing Doctor of Nursing Practice dissertations, and it develops a list of serials titles with the most heavily weighted impact. The issue of resource currency is analyzed, and the study finds a heavy reliance on recent information sources. The study follows a method that can serve as a model for other libraries preparing to support new doctoral programs.

Collection Development and Acquisitions staff in a library have a responsibility to account for the sound and responsible expenditure of library budgets. They need to communicate their needs about the information required from the fund code structure in their Integrated Library System to perform their job duties and demonstrate sound fiscal management. When fund codes lose the granularity that provides information on the costs of different formats by subject discipline or academic department there is a subsequent loss in fiscal accountability and the ability to accurately project anticipated inflationary costs for formats in different disciplines. When the Acquisitions Unit at the Adelphi University Libraries streamlined the fund code structure the loss of granularity had a major impact on budget management and fiscal accountability for Collection Development. This unintended consequence points to the need for close collaboration and mutual understanding of needs between Collection Development and Acquisitions.

During the last 15 years, the collection development and management policies for media collections at the University Library of the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign shifted from placing a strong emphasis on restricting access to media content and limiting use to faculty and classroom needs toward a more open philosophy that supports media needs across the curriculum while simultaneously promoting the use of media collections for personal growth and the enrichment of student life and culture. The University Library now actively encourages the use of media content in a variety of forms and media collections continue to grow in popularity. These changes in the use of media, as well as changes in available formats and forms of access, present the institution with significant collection development and preservation challenges for locally managed content that must be addressed to ensure the ongoing availability of these resources.

This article reports on a bibliographic and citation analysis of 79 journal publications from 41 journals produced in a one-year period by atmospheric science researchers in the Atlantic Oceanographic Meteorological Laboratory, an affiliate of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The study used citation analysis to determine the cited publication format, age dispersion, frequency of cited journal titles, and availability of the information resources that researchers publish in and cite, and to determine how well the library supports the needs of these scientists and researchers. This type of analysis can inform collection development decisions and can be used to assess the strength of the library collection. The study found that journal articles represented 77% of all cited references and that 74% of the cited journal titles were available through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Regional Library. The study also found that the sample set of 2,516 cited journal articles from 464 journals upheld the 80/20 rule in that 85% of the citations come from the top 20% of the journal titles. Previous citation studies of science and engineering researchers have been conducted using academic library collections, whereas this study focuses on a special library collection.

This study reports on a survey conducted regarding the outsourcing of digitization projects in Saudi libraries in order to determine the extent of outsourcing being done in such projects. The survey instrument included a questionnaire about the reasons that might affect the decision to outsource, the steps involved in the outsourcing process, the obstacles encountered by digitization projects during outsourcing, the materials being outsourced, and the criteria for choosing vendors. Digitization projects were also asked about contracting and quality control. The results indicate that outsourcing is a trend in Saudi digitization projects, as five out of nine major digitization projects that responded have outsourced. There also seems to be a correlation between better quality output and the experience levels of staff and the decision to outsource.

Unsolicited gifts exacerbate existing space issues and backlogs, staff workflows, and collection policies. As the scope and needs of libraries continually change, the positions that might have typically managed these donations, such as gift librarians or paraprofessional staff, are no longer automatically replaced as they become vacant. In the University of Mississippi Libraries, recent technological developments such as the “getting it started toolkit” and “gift deselection manager” have helped to streamline workflow by generating data that can be shared with subject librarians as well as administration.
