Western fiction, in the view of many authors and publishers affiliated with that genre as well as librarians, feel that the Western has become severely marginalized and, as a result, is more difficult to select to ensure well rounded collections. This study examines the collections of 45 select American public libraries to determine the degree to which 40 non-Spur Award-winning titles are found in their popular fiction collections.

The author of this article sent out surveys to libraries throughout New York State to study gifts-in-kind practices and policies among, primarily, public and academic institutions. The study found that most libraries have a selective or limited gifts-in-kind policy but there were few libraries that never accept gifts-in-kind. In addition, he found that public libraries tended to view gifts-in-kind as potential revenue sources while academic libraries saw it is a form of outreach. In addition, discarding criteria for gifts-in-kind are discussed as well as the lack of hard data being collected by various institutions. Respondents answers were weighed in tables to give an accurate picture of selection and deselection criteria.

This article provides an in-depth analysis of one academic library's experience with a modest sample of titles and 15-month results of a patron-driven acquisition program. We report on the analysis of the books purchased and used based on the ebrary patron-driven acquisition titles loaded in the University of Arkansas Libraries’ catalog from June 1, 2012 to September 4, 2013. This article presents an overview of the project, the objectives and methodology used in the study, and an analysis of the characteristics of the books that were used and purchased. It also includes a comparative evaluation of the titles selected by patrons to those selected by other libraries to determine whether the patrons made good choices, and recommendations on whether it is advantageous to buy the books on the first or subsequent uses.

Abstract How many monographs acquired in a particular year circulate in that year? What percentage have their first circulation each successive year? Does the pattern differ for different broad subject areas, i.e., humanities, the sciences, and the social sciences? This article tests the assumption that the first-circulation pattern differs by subject. We conclude that the pattern does not differ. The finding is important for decisions about off-site storage, assessing collection development, maintaining departmental libraries, etc. Regardless of subject, if a book has not circulated at least once within a few years after acquisition, it is unlikely to find its reader.
