The capability of optical technology to perform beamsteering over a large bandwidth without beamsquint is demonstrated on a 8 channels prototype operating in the 6-18 GHz frequency band. The angular coverage of 90/spl deg/ with 9 beam positions is realised by a 5 bits optical true time delay module covering delays from 6.4 ps to 178.4 ps.

The lowest achievable noise figure for an amplifierless photonic link using a traveling-wave external modulator is derived, assuming perfect, passive impedance matching. Expressions applicable to both lossless and lossy traveling-wave electrodes are presented.

We investigate theoretically and experimentally the feasibility and the limitations of optical vector network analysis based on single-sideband modulation. It is found that the accuracy of the technique relies on a high suppression of the unwanted sideband.

Transmission of optical signals intensity-modulated by an RF carrier is investigated. Linear and nonlinear effects are found to be independent as long as the nonlinear part of the fiber phase-constant less than one third of the dispersive part. Soliton-like effects are discovered at higher power levels.

This paper defines "effective" gains and noise figures for each component in an analog photonic link which, when inserted into the equation for the noise figure of cascaded components, yield the established link noise figure equation. Whereas the square-law electro-optic devices (modulator and photodetector) have effective gains that are - not surprisingly - dependent on RF power levels, it is found that the effective noise figures of the components that dominate the link noise figure are independent of RF power over the link's range of useful RF input power levels.

The effect of optical reflection on direct modulated laser sources were experimentally studied. Key parameters of microwave optical links such as second and third order intercept point and spurious free dynamic range were measured as function of optical back-reflection level. MQW Fabry-Perot and DFB lasers were compared with short and long optical fibers.

An optically controlled phase-shifter has been designed taking benefit of high resistive silicon photo-absorption at 843 nm. Phase-shift of 85/spl deg/ has been achieved in the frequency range 18 GHz-28 GHz under very low optical power while the magnitude remains practically constant. Physical and electromagnetic modelling has been performed to explain optically controlled microwave effects in these microstrip structures.
