An efficient scheme for the optical generation of a dispersion tolerant double-sideband with suppressed carrier (DSB-SC) signal is presented. A fiber loop mirror, offering an optical bandwidth of more than 130 nm is used to filter out the required sidebands.

Radar systems require transmission of very high purity local oscillators with both low phase noise and low insertion losses. We present optimized directly modulated reactively matched optical links, that exhibit 0 dB gain for frequencies below 1 GHz.

A strained-SiGe heterojunction bipolar phototransistor is presented for the first time. Theoretical demonstration of the device is recalled. Practical measurements at 940 nm are presented. A dc phototransistor mode responsivity of 1.49 A/W is achieved. Tools are proposed for the opto-microwave behavior analyses of photodetectors. A frequency behavior reaching 32 GHz with a -70 dBm output level and a 200 /spl mu/W input optical power is demonstrated.

High photocurrent effects in an electroabsorption modulator are explored using the high output power from an integrated SGDBR laser followed by semiconductor optical amplifier. It is shown how the equivalent EAM junction resistance is reduced with photocurrent to lower than 30 /spl Omega/, how the modulation response is correspondingly affected and how the gain of electroabsorption-modulated analog links ultimately becomes limited by the absorbed photocurrent.

Dispersion penalty has been investigated widely in 1550 nm fiber-optical links transmitting microwave (/spl mu/W) signals. However, less attention was addressed to the levels of harmonics. This paper presents theoretical and experimental results on estimation of harmonics in the transmission.
