The 5th International Workshop on Software Engineering Education for the Next Generation was held on May 16, 2023 in Melbourne, Australia. The workshop was part of the 45th International Conference on Software Engineering. It specifically supported the general theme of "Educating the Next Generation of Software Engineers". Building on its predecessors, the workshop used a highly interactive format, structured around eight short paper presentations to generate discussion topics, an activity to select the most interesting topics, and structured breakout sessions. This enabled the participants to discuss the most interesting topics in detail. Participants presented the results of the breakout sessions using mind maps.

Did you know that Steve Jobs was diagnosed with Dyslexia, a learning disorder that involves difficulty reading, writing and spelling. For a young schooler this could have set the end of anything remarkable for young Steve, but to humanity's amazement, he grew to become one of the most successful and innovative persons in history. Not only Steve, but Elon Musk as well revealed that he has Asperger syndrome, a form of Autism spectrum. What does this tell the rest of us? It tells us that there is a potential place for Neurodiversity; not as charity but as success factor. Neurodiversity is a term first coined by the Austrian sociologist Judy Singer that refers to the fact that human brains have neurological variations in how it functions and perceive the world. Instances include, but not limited to ADHD, Autism, or Dyslexia. However, the workforce has recently started to see neurodiversity not as a pathological case, but rather as difference in mental abilities. Neurodivergent people are not sick or incapable; they just posses different mental abilities; and workforce can gain from them. This paper illustrates key characteristics that the software industry can benefit from by employing more neurodivergent engineers.

Risks to the Public

Peter G. Neumann
Where to begin? Things seem to be getting wildly out of control. I make a comment in the arti cial intelligence subsection here, relating to risks of autonomous robotic airplane pilots (Pibot, Wingman). That comment is also applicable to self-driving vehicles, hospital AI, and other life-critical or mission-critical automated and semi-automated systems: We desperately need evidence-based assurance rather than over-hyped assertions that we should simply trust the developers and operating managers. Oth- erwise, the integrity and credibility of our rampantly increasing overdependence on untrustworthy technol- ogy may cause a collapse of trust in our technology. Undoubtedly, avoiding such a systemic failure may require radical changes in how computer science and system engineering should be taught and practiced, along with corresponding oversight, and serious penalties for failures. I once again invoke the Einstein Principle that Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler. It is just one of many important principles that are needed to make our system development into a solid discipline. However, beware of simplistic legislation, charlatans, frauds, and other recurring risks.

The potential benefits of using the engaging and interactive nature of games to achieve specific objectives have been recognized by researchers and professionals from numerous domains. Serious games have been developed to impart knowledge, skills, and awareness in areas such as education, healthcare and the environment, while gamification has been applied to enhance the engagement, motivation, and participation of users in non-game activities such as sustainability and learning. As a result, the fields of game engineering, software engineering, and user experience are increasingly converging to create innovative solutions that blend the strengths of games with real-world applications.

Computer science and engineering students and teachers alike, are just trying to get by, live their lives, but there are hinderances, things that interfere. Some hindrances are beyond our control for example, illness and power outages. Yet others, make no sense, such as U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) "deemed export" regulations. Academic research is intended to be shared and released into the public to advance human progress. Research, at one time, had legal cover for restrictions on sharing, through Executive Order NSDD-189, which placed an exemption on restrictions over fundamental research.

In this note, we report on a half-day tutorial designed to introduce software architecture practitioners and researchers to the concepts and open-source implementations of blended modeling for software architectures. The tutorial covered blended modeling motivation and principles, generation of editors, generation of the synchronization infrastructure, and collaborative modeling techniques. Through presentations, examples, and demonstrations, participants explored the practical implementation of blended modeling environments that can be tailored to their specific needs. The note provides a detailed account of the tutorial sessions, including the main implications of a focus group discussion held in the final session of the tutorial. In the follow-up to the tutorial, we conducted a survey to assess participants' perceptions of blended modeling's usefulness within their contexts. Post-tutorial actions and survey results are discussed as well, providing valuable insight into the benefits and potential challenges associated with the adoption of blended modeling.
