Abstract This chapter first outlines a trend of change in the image of animals in several disciplines, which indicates the emergence of a paradigmatic shift in the treatment of animals and their relations to humans. It then discusses the apparent deficiencies in the study of tourist-animal relations, and ends up with some suggestions to rethink the basic assumptions and theoretical approaches to animals in tourism studies.

Abstract This concluding chapter suggests that the coronavirus crisis and its consequences can be considered from the perspective of chaos theory. This proposes that chaotic systems - including tourism - although subject to periods of disorder or chaos, inevitably self-organize into a new form of order and structure. The chapter then proceeds to expand on remarks by Richard Butler in Chapter 4, to reflect on the potential nature of this 'new normal' in the context of tourism and development, highlighting a variety of potentially influential actors.

Abstract This chapter revisits the theoretical relationship between tourism and development, within the framework of contemporary understandings of development objectives, processes and challenges and the necessary parameters of resource sustainability. Re-visioning development as prosperity, as opposed to economic growth, as well as recognition of the 'de-developmental' consequences of the growth imperative, points to the need for policies that allow for only targeted growth in tourism within an overall slowing down (or even de-growth)of tourism globally.

Abstract This chapter advances two main arguments: first, that tourism and migration are strongly inter-related, and that this is due to both their shared structural determinants (for example, transport infrastructures) in the form of scapes, and to the enfolded nature of mobility. That is, individual mobilities are enfolded over time, with earlier migration experiences influencing later patterns of tourism and vice versa. Second, it is argued that there are two main economic development outcomes of the migration-tourism nexus. The first is seen in the roles of individuals as consumers, that is, as tourists. Tourism expenditures convert into income and jobs so that migration flows have long-term implications for future tourism expenditure patterns. And secondly, migration plays an important role in the territorial redistribution of resources; migrants are bearers of knowledge, skills, competences and capital.

Abstract This chapter explores conceptions of neo-liberalism in the context of the development of tourism research. Although its intellectual origins are somewhat earlier, neo-liberalism as an economic philosophy is mostly seen as growing in global dominance from the late 1970s and early 1980s. However, the starting point for this discussion is the extensive and ongoing debate about neo-liberalism's general influence on higher education in particular. This is justified in terms of the corresponding growth of tourism in higher education since the 1970s. Putting it another way, in the English-speaking world (and, some would argue, beyond), the apparent growth of neo-liberalism in higher education is coincidental with the rise of tourism as a subject in that milieu. Accordingly, we might not unreasonably expect the development of tourism as a relatively new area of enquiry to more strongly reflect the supposed tropes of the neo-liberal project than is the case with more established subjects. Following from this, the chapter seeks to explore the extent to which the neo-liberal project has influenced tourism research, finally reflecting on the implications of such an analysis.

Abstract This chapter reflects primarily on the supply-side issues and on the reality of successfully harnessing tourism and achieving desired impacts in developing countries. Specifically, drawing on the experiences of the past three decades as well as a cohort of over 80 World Bank Group tourism-related lending and advisory projects between 2000 and 2019 in 62 countries, the chapter highlights lessons and ex-post evaluations and observations drawn from these projects and the consequential dialogues with governments and the private sector. It also suggests some guiding principles for tourism development activities going forward. In addition, the demand-side is examined from the perspective of the influencers of changing demand patterns and distribution channels, such as global value chains and disruptive technologies, and the effects they are having on destinations and their ability to respond.

Abstract This chapter on sustainability and tourism growth discusses: the problem with the use of gross domestic product (GDP) as a measure of tourism growth; the concepts of weak and strong sustainability; tourism and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); the need for new business models, an ecological perspective and good governance for tourism to succeed in its sustainability agenda; and the proposed MST index for measuring sustainability.

Abstract This chapter reflects on the principles of smart tourism development, charts its conceptual and practical evolution and discusses its role in future tourism development around the globe. Specifically, it argues for a shift away from using smart tourism to advance a purely technological agenda and highlights the need to develop smart tourism ideas into frameworks that can guide tourism development research and practice.
