ABSTRACTE-commerce has made customer-generated product reviews accessible for analysis. Each customer review summarizes the product's unique customer experience and features. In product development processes, it is essential to reach the information content of customer reviews early. Using customer content as data provides designers with comprehensive, cost-effective, and rapid insights into product evaluation, user experience, and even identification of new product features and creative design interventions. Despite all these superior potentials, analyzing unstructured and mass product review data takes time and effort with conventional methods. This study proposes to utilize product reviews as input for developing user experience-based products and to support designers' creativity in the early design phases. Therefore, in this study, the opinions of consumers about a product were subjected to a text mining analysis at different levels, and mood values were determined for each category and sub-product aspect with their justification. In the last part of the study, the essential product improvement areas based on the comment/sentiment score are presented, and the potential of product comments as information content about design creativity is discussed.KEYWORDS: Creativityindustrial designdesign knowledgeonline product reviewssentiment analysis Disclosure statementThe anonymized user review data supporting this study's findings are available from amazon.com. ABSTRACT Current healthcare systems are increasingly strained to meet changing demands of longevity and the surfeit of the population’s complex and chronic diseases and disabilities. This paper aims to demonstrate how creativity through design methodologies can play a significant, positive role in improving patients’ daily lives within this complex area. Design and creativity are uniquely placed to have a valuable role in collaborating with healthcare professionals to find creative solutions to improve the effectiveness of healthcare systems and address future challenges, but barriers to interdisciplinary collaboration limit them. A literature review was conducted to understand the current impact of design methodologies used within allied health practice utilizing a synthesis matrix to identify and collate recurring themes over disparate articles. These themes were then analyzed and further researched to understand the tensions between health and design. The results established that this issue needed to be interpreted through the lens of a wicked problem. Accordingly, the parallels and tensions between the current paradigms of health and design were established, giving depth of meaning to the barriers and potential solutions. Whilst there is a need to explore this topic further, current thinking suggests a significant benefit from interprofessional collaboration and discussion.

ABSTRACT The growing presence of additive manufacturing (AM) in engineering has resulted in a consequent need for AM and design for AM (DfAM) educational interventions in design. Several researchers have proposed AM and DfAM educational interventions; however, some argue that these efforts might not be sufficient to develop higher-level skills (e.g., leveraging AM capabilities for creative design). Prior work suggests that longer, spaced educational interventions are more effective in encouraging learning and information retention; however, these interventions could also be time-consuming and expensive to implement. Our aim in this research is to compare two variations of a DfAM educational intervention: (1) a module-style intervention spread over two sessions with the introduction of DfAM evaluation metrics, and (2) a lecture-style intervention completed in a single session with no evaluation metrics introduced. From our results, we see that students from the module-style intervention reported a greater increase in their DfAM self-efficacy and reported having given a greater emphasis on part consolidation and feature size. However, the structure of the educational intervention did not influence the creativity of ideas generated by the students. These findings highlight the utility of module-style DfAM educational interventions toward increasing DfAM self-efficacy, but not necessarily design creativity.

ABSTRACT Smart product design (SPD) is more complex than traditional product design (TPD), requiring intense interdisciplinary collaboration. It is well understood that prototypes are an effective means to facilitate communicating design concepts. However, there is limited research concerning prototyping preferences of design disciplines involved in SPD. The research explores the use of prototyping in smart product development. Specifically, it aims to understand the preferences and dimensions of fidelity of different prototyping tools that can support communication in the SPD process for various stakeholders. This paper presents two surveys. The first investigates the use of prototyping tools by different disciplines involved in SPD versus TPD. The second compares elements of key prototyping tools used across disciplines within SPD. Results show that the interactivity and environment dimensions of fidelity of prototyping tools motivate differences in preference between SPD and TPD. Moreover, user depiction and contextual information are key elements of prototyping that support designers in communicating interactive and environmental qualities of SPD concepts.

ABSTRACT Product innovation, based on the identification and implementation of new solutions, is essential to keep a company competitive. However, the risk of failure of a new solution must be properly weighted during the decision-making in the design activity. This study proposes a method to evaluate a new design solution through the comparison with an old one to be substituted, and based on their requirements. In order to better evaluate the new solution, new requirements about its specific peculiarities are extracted from patents of similar solutions and considered in the evaluation. Requirements extraction is carried out automatically, through natural language processing, while the evaluation considers technical, marketing, and economic criteria. In particular, financial proceeds and patents investments were considered. The proposed method was applied in a real industrial case study were the substitution of carbon fiber heating mat over the copper heating mat was assessed. This study contributes to support creativity in innovation design by providing unknown requirements on which to work on the new product. In addition, it can stimulate the designer on this aim, by presenting the requirements along with new ideas, already implementing them in other fields/contexts that can act as sources of inspiration or creativity triggers.

ABSTRACT Computational co-creative systems in design allow users to collaborate with an AI partner on open-ended creative tasks in the design process. Co-creative systems can enhance design creativity by inspiring the exploration of novel design solutions in the initial idea generation. However, there are a lack of studies about the effect of co-creative systems on the cognitive process during ideation. This study examines the effect of an AI-based co-creative design tool that provides inspirations based on conceptual similarity on design ideation. It was hypothesized that conceptually similar inspirations have a significant influence on design ideation than random inspirations. The Collaborative Ideation Partner (CIP), a co-creative design system that provides inspirational images based on conceptual similarity, was developed to examine the effect of an AI Model for conceptual similarity on ideation during a design task. We conducted an experiment with a control condition in which the images are selected randomly from a curated database for inspiration and a treatment condition in which conceptual similarity is the basis for selecting the next inspiring image. Our findings show that the AI model of conceptual similarity used in the treatment condition has a significant effect on the novelty, variety, and quantity of ideas during human design ideation.

ABSTRACT Extensive research has focused on the relationship between culture and creativity. However, related studies typically adopt national cultural values, set countries as independent variables to explore the relationship between culture and individuals’ creativity, or have inconsistent conclusions. Therefore, this study attempted to explore this relationship at the individual level in design processes from a phenomenological perspective, based on two design tasks carried out by 27 students at a university in China. The results showed a positive association between pleasure and long-term versus short-term orientation of individual cultural values in the two creative methods – 6-3-5 and collaborative sketching (C-sketch) – which were statistically significant. However, the correlation between enlightenment and long-term versus short-term orientation only existed in the 6-3-5 method. Based on the analysis, we found that an individual’s educational level affected their self-evaluation in the experience of creativity, and the 6-3-5 method was more favorable than the C-sketch method for the participants. Moreover, we developed a visualization framework and explained the relationship between culture and creativity based on the componential theory of creativity and Hofstede’s culture theory. Furthermore, the study might serve as a groundwork for further examination of the relationship between individuals’ culture and their experience of creativity.

However, related studies typically adopt national cultural values, set countries as independent variables to explore the relationship between culture and individuals’ creativity, or have inconsistent conclusions. Therefore, this study attempted to explore this relationship at the individual level in design processes from a phenomenological perspective, based on two design tasks carried out by 27 students at a university in China. The results showed a positive association between pleasure and long-term versus short-term orientation of individual cultural values in the two creative methods – 6-3-5 and collaborative sketching (C-sketch) – which were statistically significant. However, the correlation between enlightenment and long-term versus short-term orientation only existed in the 6-3-5 method. Based on the analysis, we found that an individual’s educational level affected their self-evaluation in the experience of creativity, and the 6-3-5 method was more favorable than the C-sketch method for the participants. Moreover, we developed a visualization framework and explained the relationship between culture and creativity based on the componential theory of creativity and Hofstede’s culture theory. Furthermore, the study might serve as a groundwork for further examination of the relationship between individuals’ culture and their experience of creativity.","PeriodicalId":43485,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Design Creativity and Innovation","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2023-01-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43360999","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
