Rona Luo
Abstract:An essay about life after the Tiananmen Square massacre in June of 1989. Through recollection, Luo examines the Tel Aviv protest that coincidentally occurred the same day of the massacre; the staged sit-ins in Guangzhou two days after; and the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile at the hands of police officers in America twenty-seven years later. In that time, Luo had moved to New York to meet her parents, protested for the rights of garment workers' rights in Chinatown, and had a child.

Abstract:This exhibition presents works from iconic artists such as Richard Avedon, Marlene Dumas, and Kara Walker, alongside archival materials in order to explore the life, work, and legacy of James Baldwin (1924-1987). Baldwin's way of seeing and being evolved through his relationships and exposure to the work of visual artists, during an era when the harsh realities of racial oppression were confronted with aesthetics emphasizing self-love, pride, and validation. God Made My Face explores Baldwin through his words, relationships, and the works of other artists produced during his own lifetime and today.
