The research described in this paper concerns the fatigue life of base course asphalt mixtures. Two mixture types were chosen for analysis: asphalt concrete and High Modulus Asphalt Concrete. Either of them contained different bitumen types, including standard pen-grade bitumens, polymer-modified bitumens (PMB) and so-called highly-modified asphalts (HiMA). Fatigue life tests were carried out and their results were used for fatigue law determination of the mixtures under analysis. Fatigue life analyses were performed both for the analysed mixtures and for typical flexible pavements. The value of the so-called shift factor was estimated to enable application in the design of pavements of the fatigue law parameters determined in laboratory. Two fatigue parameters are proposed in this research: critical strain and fatigue life ratio. They provide a more robust comparison of fatigue life determinations on bituminous mixtures by taking into consideration also the fatigue life of the pavement structure itself. The analyses conducted as part of this research enabled assessment of the fatigue life of asphalt mixtures taking account of the type of both the mixture and the bitumen it contains.

The paper presents selected information on the quality of the aggregates, especially natural sands, extracted and manufactured in Poland. The sands usually meet the basic quality requirements (e.g. concerning grading and purity) for fine aggregates to be used in road construction. Tests of the alkali reactivity of natural sands and manufactured (by crushing compact rock) sands are described in detail. The results of the reactivity tests carried out in accordance with domestic standards PN-B-06714 show the tests to be poorly reliable. Exemplary abridged petrographic descriptions of selected sands and the results of reactivity tests carried out on mortar beams in accordance with standard ASTM C1260 are presented. The beam linear expansion values were geographically assigned by marking them on a contour map of Poland. The tested fine aggregates were found to greatly vary qualitatively as regards their mineral composition and the likelihood of occurrence of the alkali-aggregate reaction. Over half of the tested sands were characterized by an expansion over 0.1%, which according to the AASHTO R-80 classification means that they are moderately reactive aggregates.

The paper presents an analysis of a flexible road pavement with a concrete pipeline running along the road axis, just under the pavement. The subgrade of such a pavement cannot be regarded as homogenous and the design cannot be limited to merely the selection of a catalogue pavement structure or to the direct application of the mechanistic-empirical method. Additional analyses are necessary in order to evaluate whether the proposed road design will provide proper protection for the underground structures located in the subgrade. The problem is considered as three-dimensional and the analyses are carried out using the finite element method. The proposed design variants are evaluated and the solution recommended for considered case is indicated. Moreover, the results of parametric analyses of the selected variant, carried out to determine the influence of the backfill parameters on the deformation of the geosynthetic reinforcement in the road foundation and on the tensile stresses in the concrete pipe, are presented.
