reinforcing the authenticity of his musicianship and his rootedness, as a composer, in the core of the Western canon. That realization, in turn, underlines the humanity and emotional directness that lies at the core of his music. Perhaps the book’s most striking essay is its most subjective: Lawrence Berman’s reconsideration of four Kirchner scores—the string quartets nos. 1 and 3, Sonata Concertante, and Music for Or chestra—as a type of twentieth-century extension of Liszt’s concept of program music. The effort, as the author notes, is entirely intuitive. And yet, his idiosyncratic conclusions (that the “story” of the Sonata Concertante, for example, might concern a “lover’s quarrel or a domestic dispute between husband and wife” [p. 235]) have the ring of, if not exactly truth, then at least plausibility. That such a sense of the man and an understanding of his music can result from a collection of disparate writings on, by, and about him is a testament to Kirchner’s work and the abiding impression he left on those around him. While one wouldn’t mind the addition of a transcript from one or two of John Kenneth Galbraith’s New Year’s Eve toasts (they’re alluded to here; the economist was a regular guest at Kirchner’s holiday parties), what we have got is an all-encompassing celebration of the composer’s life and career. Its treasures, big and small, combine to make it both a marvelous introduction to Kirchner’s wider world and a worthy supplement to Robert Riggs’s admirable biography of the composer (Leon Kirchner: Composer, Performer, and Teacher [Rochester, NY: Rochester University Press, 2010]).

Digital Scholarship Anna E. Kijas (bio) It has been twenty-three years since a set of essays exploring the changes of the music librarianship profession were published in the March 2000 issue of Notes, and during this period of time, technology in libraries and more broadly has continued to evolve and change considerably.1 H. Stephen Wright contributed the "Technology" essay to this special issue, in which he examined the changes of the prior twenty years and the impact of technology on libraries and librarians.2 Wright's essay focused on the limitations of library catalogs (OPACs) in terms of access, (lack of) interoperability, poor search interface design and user experience, as well as shortcomings and potential pitfalls of moving to electronic collections. He rightly argued that there is and will continue to be a need for collections and bibliographic data to connect across other collections, federated searching, seamless content delivery, and interoperability between platforms. There was no mention of collaboration between library workers and faculty or academic technology units to support the technological or research needs across disciplinary areas, mainly due to the siloed nature of the work occurring in these campus units. And, the contributions of library workers to the creation of library catalogs, databases, metadata, digitization efforts, and more were generally done behind-the-scenes, and thus invisible labor. But this essay is about digital scholarship, which has grown out of and benefited from the advancements of technology that occurred and are still developing since the time of Wright's essay. In addition, digital scholarship has provided opportunities for libraries to challenge the status quo of the prior decades and work to make visible the labor and contributions of library workers.3 Soon after the year 2000, Wikipedia was born, the [End Page 40] Internet Archive launched the Wayback Machine (2001 to the public), the Google Books Project began (2004) leading to the development of the HathiTrust Library, digital collection and metadata aggregator projects were released including the Digital Public Library of America and Europeana, there was an explosion of user-generated content due to the abundance of user-friendly blogging and website platforms, as well as social media and networking platforms (e.g., Friendster, Facebook, Twitter). This list only scratches the surface of the technological advancements, mainly as they relate to the world wide web, free and open knowledge platforms, interoperable infrastructures, as well as frameworks and standards that aim to generate and use machine readable data. So what exactly is digital scholarship? While there are many variant definitions, this one from the Digital Scholarship Working Group at the Library of Congress resonates quite well and applies to many digital scholarship units in US based academic or specialized libraries and that is: "research that encompasses digital publishing,

collection has successfully overcome that binary. Overall, the book contains a magnificent selection of well-researched scholarly articles and works well as a collection. Often edited collections can seem like a mishmash of tenuously linked articles, but I did not get that impression from this collection. With a solid amount of music analysis, this collection will be particularly useful to music analysts, music historians, and general music enthusiasts. The collection not only provides stimulating new insights into Medtner’s life and works but also captures his musical and philosophical transitions in his move from Moscow to London. While the preface could have been more detailed in its contextualization, drawing upon themes that are referenced across the collection of the articles and illustrating the wider cultural trends across the arts in this period, this should not detract from the overall contribution of each author. Indeed, the collection of essays sheds new light on the intricacies of Medtner’s life and works and illustrates the parallels between his music and his musical and religious philosophy. It is well researched, engaging, and successfully draws upon a number of important themes for further scholarly discussion.

This means, of course, that any relations between the composer–pianist grandfather and his grandson were limited to the first six years of the grandson’s life. The many pages of text, a full chapter and an appendix, offer much anecdotal speculation but no hard evidence about the existence of Elena Dahl, a feature of the book that to this reader weakens the strong content of much of the rest of it. In spite of these and some other reservations about Nollan’s approach, her “thorough investigation into the personal side of the composer’s identity, and how it connects with the matrix of his compositions and attitudes to the world around him” (p. 4) is a qualified success. She accomplishes this goal, providing new insights into the soul of the composer. The book is an essential, approachable resource providing much that is useful and new to anyone seeking to know more deeply Rachmaninoff’s life and character.

Publishing James L. Zychowicz (bio) Music publishing remains a vital part of the art because of the ways in which it reflects new works, developments in technology, and avenues of commerce. Given the scope of the field (see the outline in Figure 1) it should be no surprise that music publishing continues to adapt itself by using and developing processes to reach audiences, and twenty-first century culture is particularly strong in offering various options to a field that has been characterized by black-and-white pages bound in some fashion. Even with the self-fulfilling prophecy that rises periodically about the decline of classical music, an examination of contemporary music shows growth in the styles and sub-genres that composers use to express their ideas.1 Rather than a death knell, those modes of expression point to various new and, perhaps, underused formats that may result in increasingly more publications,2 and it remains for dedicated musicians to explore those avenues. (Figure 2 lists selected formats in music publishing.) In this regard, the digital culture of the twenty-first century has options that involve both traditional and innovative media, with the plurality of choices expanding the reach of music publishing. If the end of the twentieth century showed the potential in nascent digital culture for future developments, the early twentieth-first century stands apart for the ways in which technology has changed music publishing profoundly. The print-based focus of the late twentieth century has shifted to multiple platforms that include print and digital versions of its publications. Some innovative publishers also have titles conceived digitally from the start to take advantage of the benefits of the online milieu. With the choices that exist, music publishing has the potential to engage its audiences in ways that had not existed when print was still the focus and also to explore the ways in which technology can serve the art form. Music Publishing Overview: Selected Available Formats. In this regard the operational definition of music publishing as the art of bringing music products to the public, which George Sturm put forward in the forward-looking assessment of music librarianship at the opening of the end of the twentieth century,3 remains valid, and it is a matter of understanding how publishers do this. In the decades since Sturm published his essay, the print paradigm that guided many aspects [End Page 83] of music publishing has given way to a multi-faceted environment in which print and digital technologies coexist. It is important to recognize that technological developments have always shaped publishing efforts, as the print culture transformed the manual transmission of music notation into editions for large audiences.
