Abstract The Teach-Back Method is a technique used by health care providers to non-shamingly verify patient understanding of for example, their diagnosis, medications, hospital stay, and discharge instructions. Informed patients may avoid a costly readmission to the hospital. The hospital library can be a resource center for tools on how and when to use the Teach-Back Method. In addition, the librarian can teach, or co-teach, this technique to health care team members. If the hospital librarian is involved in patient education or relationship-based care, they may indeed be practicing the Teach-Back Method during the patient’s stay or when the patient is discharged. This column describes the Teach-Back technique and gives examples of its use in patient discharge. It also features a successful example of a librarian being involved in teaching the Teach-Back Method.

Abstract OpenAI's machine learning-based ChatGPT implementation has become a trending topic in the first quarter of 2023. Comparative assessment of the health information provided by ChatGPT in Turkish with the health information provided in English is the purpose of this study. Comparison between English answer to English question and English translation of Turkish answer to Turkish question is made by five gastroenterology specialists for their comprehensiveness and accuracy. Turkish responses of ChatGPT were assessed as correct as English responses and less comprehensive but not evaluated as “inadequate”. It was found that ChatGPT could be used for online health information purposes in the Turkish language.

Abstract Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the readability and reliability of online content related to cerebral palsy (CP) and to classify sites that contain quality and readable information. Method On April 30, 2022, the term “cerebral palsy” was searched on the Google search engine. The categories, quality, content, readability, Alexa rank values, and backlink numbers of the sites were analyzed. The Journal of American Medical Association score and HONcode seal were used for quality assessment, and the Flesch–Kincaid grade (FKG) and the Simple Measure of Gobbledygook (SMOG) were used for readability assessment. Results Of the 155 sites, 46 had high-quality content. The quality of health portal and scientific publishing sites appeared to be high. The top 10 sites were determined to be of significantly higher quality (p = .017) than the remaining sites. The average readability values of the sites were not at the recommended level. Conclusion Despite the abundance of information available on CP-related websites, most of them were not of high quality. Additionally, many websites did not reach the recommended readability levels. Revision of existing online content related to CP and production of new high-quality content in line with readability recommendations is urgently required.

Abstract This study was conducted to examine the validity and reliability of the Saudi version of the Cyberchondria CSS-12 (short form). A convenience sample of (434) university student’s were selected to evaluate the validity and reliability of Cyberchondria severity scale CSS-12. M-PLUS 7 and SPSS were used to analyze data. Cronbach’s alpha, divergent validity, exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were conducted as well. The CSS-12 showed acceptable validity and reliability among the Saudi sample. The CSS-12 had positive and significant correlations with health anxiety.

Abstract Parkinson Disease is a chronic movement disorder of the nervous system that can cause tremor, slowness, stiffness, and walking and balance problems; constipation, depression, memory problems, and other non-movement symptoms can also be part of Parkinson’s. It is a chronic disorder whose symptoms slowly worsen over time, although the experience is unique to each person. It’s estimated that nearly 1 million people in the United States and more than 6 million people worldwide are affected by Parkinson’s, most of whom are over age 60 with the average age of onset at approximately 70 years. A small percentage of people have “early-onset” disease that can begin before the age of 50. There is no cure, but treatments can help to manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

Abstract Teachers assume important responsibilities in improving the health literacy levels of the society. Health literacy and vaccination are important prerequisites for health protection and promotion. This study aimed to investigate the effect of teachers’ health literacy levels on their vaccine hesitancy. This is a descriptive cross-sectional study. The health literacy and vaccine hesitancy levels of the teachers were found to be moderate. A negative and weak significant relationship was observed between health literacy and vaccine hesitancy, indicating that as health literacy increases, vaccine hesitancy may decrease. In addition, it was revealed that general health perception and over-the-counter drug use are associated with health literacy, and age, income status, and place of residence are associated with vaccine hesitancy. The health literacy and vaccine hesitancy levels of teachers should be improved. As health literacy increases, vaccine hesitancy decreases, which is an important finding in terms of increasing the effectiveness of vaccination programs.

Abstract Reddit discourse surrounding treatments for autistic individuals is easily accessible. Multiple Reddit threads discuss Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) as one option. Such content impacts decision-making despite the absence of gatekeeping mechanisms to identify misinformation. Using a cross-sectional design, this study explores perceptions of ABA-based interventions shared on Reddit by exploring posts’ content, stance and evidence used to support claims. Posts examined generally lacked support of scientific evidence. Additionally, perspectives on ABA were influenced by personal experiences with the intervention. This data provides insight to support healthcare professionals and families engaged in shared decision-making regarding intervention choices.
