This work presents a study on the design of a Rotary Switched Reluctance Motor (RSRM) of 1 hp through the 3D finite elements analysis (FEA) concerning static magnetization characteristics by phase. A comparison between two types of mesh (tetrahedral and hexahedral) was performed. In order to validate the analysis, three experimental methods were used: rising (RC) and falling (FC) DC current and determination of the impedance with AC voltage (DI) methods. In the experiment a data acquisition board (DAQ) integrated to platform LabView® was used. From the results obtained, a comparative study between simulated and experimental values was held. An evaluation on all methods, highlighting the positive, and negative aspects and their limitation was performed.

This paper presents a general approach for the time-domain analysis of transmission lines composed of inductive and capacitive lumped elements. First order time differential equations are derived for the distributions of voltages and currents along the line, thus allowing analysis of transient regimes of the lines being excited by a pulse of arbitrary shape. In particular we examine the propagation characteristics of periodic lines in which identical unit cells are repeated periodically, especially the interpretation of positive and negative phase velocities associated with the LC and CL topologies.

Reducing the volume with maximum efficiency, on equipment and systems, result in a high cost, making the optimized design a great challenge for engineers. On power factor correctors (PFCs) converters, magnetic elements as inductors and transformers have a strong influence on cost, volume, power density and performance, they become the more important elements in these systems. Thus, the need for an optimized design of these components is extremely important. With this purpose, this paper presents the inductor design for a 1kW, VIN 220VAC e VOUT 400VDC, PFC boost converter. The design is developed using different operating points (Δi @ fs) and different magnetic materials technologies (Molipermalloy, High Flux and KoolMμ) to perform a comparative analysis. These powder materials have extremely attractive characteristics for PFCs and this paper indicates which material offers the best cost / benefit relationship between the three technologies of magnetic materials aforementioned.

Lighting Design is a field of engineering that often misses artificial intelligence tools and computational approaches to help designers. Genetic Algorithm (GA) is a widely used heuristic for search and optimization. This work presents results from applying GA and Web services to develop a computer-generated public lighting design remote application. This application is hosted in a cluster computing environment that supports Web services. A case study is also presented: the achieved solution shows a superior uniformity of illumination with almost 20% of economy on monthly power consumption when compared to the previous edified one.

Gas concentration measurement is a very important task to several industries, such as chemical, oil, nuclear and others. The goal is to assure the final product quality or to monitor the gas concentration level that can damage process, installations, humans and / or environment. This work develops an embedded system (hardware + software) to gas concentration measurement. The meter must to do the acquisition and processing signals from several transducers in order to infer simultaneously the concentration of different gases in the environment. The measurements can be sent to a remote computer at a control central room, for example, by means of an industrial network protocol. In the remote computer, it is possible to monitor the gas emissions, to calibrate sensors, to correct distortions, to send alarms and others tasks. One advantages of the multi gas meter is its functioning with sensors from different suppliers and it allows to measure different types of emissions.

Photovoltaic maximum power point tracker (MPPT) systems are commonly employed to maximize the photovoltaic output power, since it is strongly affected in accordance to the incident solar radiation, surface temperature and load-type changes. Basically, a MPPT system consists on a dc-dc converter (hardware) controlled by a tracking algorithm (software) and the combination of both, hardware and software, defines the tracking efficiency. This paper shows that even when the most accurate algorithm is employed, the maximum power point cannot be found, since its imposition as operation point depends on the dc-dc converter static feature and the load-type connected to the system output. For validating the concept, the main dc-dc converters, i.e., Boost, Buck-Boost, Cuk, SEPIC and Zeta are analyzed considering two load-types: resistive voltage regulated dc bus. Simulation and experimental results are included for validating the theoretical analysis.

A simple control strategy for the Hybrid Active Series Power Filter (HASPF) based on P+Resonant compensators is presented. The structure allows the compensation of multiple selective harmonic components simultaneously. No mains voltage synchronization techniques, like a PLL, nor any voltage sensing are demanded. The entire control algorithm is performed directly in the abc frame. Practical results are presented to demonstrate the control efficacy.

Different methods have been proposed to design Series Resonant Converters (SRC) based on the experience of designers and theoretical procedures. However, SRC either Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS) or Zero Current Switching (ZCS) states do not bring enough information about power switching losses of its circuit parameters, and have complicated tank waveforms based on geometry. This document proposes a novel design methodology applied to SRC operating above resonance frequency providing a technique to observe the switching states which affects the losses. The methodology establishes a link between the State Plane Analysis (SPA) and the converter design and also, defines the thresholds of the operation regions keeping in mind the state plane trajectories. The methodology is tested in hardware implementation demonstrating its applicability from the point of view of designer. Finally, future work and conclusions are given.

This paper aims to make the tuning of PID Controllers in multivariable systems, using two optimization heuristics, namely: the GA (Genetic Algorithm) and the PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization). Two multivariable processes with two inputs and two outputs (TITO), in a decentralized control strategy, are analyzed. The first process is the Quadruple-Tank and the second process is the Wood-Berry Distillation Column. The PID tuning is modeled as an optimization problem, which cost function seeks to improve the dynamic response of the system, while forcing decoupling of the loops. Results shown that both GA and PSO were able to find good PID parameters in order to provide a reasonable dynamic behavior and a good loop decoupling.

The goal of this paper is to present a computational tool for managing data from a measurement plan of power quality parameters. The developed software, named SIGEE, includes calculation of indicators of power quality for electrical grid diagnosis purposes, the assembling of graphics of measured quantities, and the signaling by color of the violated parameters. The development of measurement management SIGEE had as motivation the power networks evolution with respect to the introduction of smart metering devices, which allow consumers to track their energy consumption and the quality of the power supplied. Java Platform Standard Edition and MySQL technologies were used to build the tool. Measured data collected from fifteen energy distribution transformers of Federal University of Ceará were used. As a result, it was observed the tool integration viability with a database for the collected measurement treatment, the collected data presentation in .xml format file, indicators' calculation and graphics presentation for assessment of the installation's power quality and energy efficiency.
