The history of the discovery of the first oil and gas fields on the Siberian platform is traced from the first oil deposit on Chemikanskaya Square in the Tolba River basin (Sakha-Yakutia) to the discovery of the first Markov oil and gas condensate field. The role of the father of Siberian oil Vasily Mikhailovich Senyukov in obtaining the first oil on the Siberian platform and in promoting the idea of reference drilling within its limits is shown. Despite the accidental discovery of the Markov field (oil fountain) in 1962, exploration work within its limits indicated the further direction of the search in the north direction 90 km from Markovo (within the Nepsky Vault).

The prediction process of reservoir properties is one of the significant targets during an explo-ration stage on the Srednebotuobinskoye field. At the moment, there are a lot of well data, including log and core data. The authors get conclusions regarding a formation and structure of the osinskiy horizon within the Srednebotuobinskoye field. The petrophysical model and the log data interpretation in osinskiy horizon based on actual information were completed. The petrophysical basis of seismic inversion was completed. It is proposed that the employment of the optimal approach to seismic inversion process can help to get more precise prediction reservoir maps than earlier and to minimize exploitation drilling risks.

The survey work, construction and operation of the railroad from Irkutsk along the southern shore of Lake Baikal were accompanied by detailed geological studies. During several field seasons during the surveys all projected directions of the railroad were studied. As a result, it was recommended to build a railroad from the source of Angara to Mysovoye village along the shore of Lake Baikal. But the results turned out to be too optimistic. During the development of rocky slopes from the source of Angara to Kultuk, intensive rockfalls began, which continued during the operation of the line, which caused new surveys of the entire section. In the vicinity of Mysovoye village, the identified ancient landslides caused additional study of the geological structure of the area and drainage works.

Within the framework of the complete seismogeodynamic cycle of the central part of the Baikal Rift System, in the series of hydrogeochemical data obtained in 2012–2022 at stations of the Kultuk polygon, variations of the thermophilic elements Na and Li and Na/Li ratios are traced in connection with changes in the 234U/238U activity ratios and 234U activity, reflecting the opening and closing of microcracks for circulating groundwaters. Coseismic chemical hydrogeodynamics of the Kultuk groundwater reservoir is considered in terms of temperature and extension–compression of the crust.

From instrumental measurements in southeastern Mongolia and adjacent China, weak seismicity is determined. However, 7.5-kilometer long system of ditches, probably of seismic nature, was detected in the western part of the Dariganga volcanic field, on the edge of the Ashate Plateau that resulted from erosional dissection of the 4.8–4.3 Ma shield edifice. We propose that the modern seismotectonic reactivation of the Askhate volcano is related to tectonic motions in the Late Cenozoic Tamtsag foredeep of the Nukut-Daban range, spatially associated with neotectonic reactivation of the Solonker suture.

A special issue of the journal “Geology and Environment” on the topic: “Consequences and assessment of the threat of earthquakes” comes out two months after the catastrophic earthquakes in Southeast Turkey that occurred on February 6, 2023. The issue presents articles on the consequences of these earthquakes and takes steps towards a theoretical understanding the nature of earthquakes, developing methods for predicting earthquakes in the Baikal region and measures to reduce damage.

Timing of earthquakes is determined by an entry of active faults in the central part of the Baikal Rift System into a metastable (preseismic) state during the development of a complete seismogeodynamic cycle. Based on a role of fluid flows as possible triggers for seismogenic deformations, in determining earthquake timing of the Baikal-Khubsugul reactivation of 2020–2023, we take into account: 1) decreasing atmospheric pressure, 2) matching–mismatching mode of oxidation–redox potential (ORP) in different stations, and 3) overall ORP decreasing in groundwaters from monitoring stations of the Kultuk polygon.
