A special issue of the journal is dedicated to researchers and the history of geological exploration in Eastern Siberia. The articles in the issue highlight the initial contributions to the study of geology, geography and mineral resources of the territory by A.V. Lvov, S.P. Peretolchin, and V.M. Senyukov, provide information about the unknown pages of the construction of the Circum-Baikal Railway, studies of the Botogol graphite deposit, the Markov oil and gas condensate field, the Baikal system of basins, and volcanism spatially associated with its development. An overview is given of the 50-year career of geologists who graduated from ISU in 1973.

The Botogol graphite deposit, located in the Eastern Sayan Mountains, is of interest not only because of its rich ores, but also because of the rich history of its study. Since the discovery of graphite manifestations on the Botogol mountain in the first half of the 19th century, the study of its structure and genesis has been underway. It took more than a century of prospecting and exploration and exploitation works to get an idea of the geology of this deposit. The history of the study of this unique deposit is considered in the article.

The article provides a detailed description of all geological formations represented by: ages from the Archean Acron to the Cenozoic Era; sedimentary rocks of different stratigraphic units, different-age magmatic complexes, metamorphic and dynamometamorphic rocks and the sequence of their formation; modern loose formations of slope, proluvial-gravel, lake, alluvial, glacial, solifluctional and others minerals and organic remains, folds and discontinuities of different morphology and genesis within several key areas of the Baikal region and the vicinity of Irkutsk, which have to be studied by students at the educational field practice on geomapping, after the second year of study at the University. In the process of geomapping students are trained in methods of mapping and cameral processing of all these geological formations and presenting the results in the form of a scientific and production report at the end of the practice.

Using the developed geoinformation system “Prediction”, an analysis was made of information available from the media on two devastating earthquakes in the Türkiye that occurred in the western segment of the East Anatolian fault on February 6, 2023. The possibilities of recognizing signs of the preparation of earthquake data by means of medium-term forecasting developed for the Baikal rift zone, which are important for assessing seismic hazard and seismic risk, are discussed. Based on the analysis of the consequences of the large-scale destruction of residential and industrial infrastructure in the Türkiye, the causes of the huge damage to the country's economy caused by earthquakes, which are largely due to unfavorable seismotectonic conditions and urbanization problems that arose as a result of insufficient compliance with the necessary requirements and norms of earthquake-resistant construction, are considered.

On January 12, 2021, a strong earthquake occurred, the epicenter of which was located in the water area of Lake Khubsugul (Mongolian People's Republic). A feature of the Khubsugul earthquake was the prolonged aftershock activity. The period of seismic reactivation in the Khubsugul area coincided with detailed measurements of electrochemical parameters of groundwaters at the southwestern coast of Lake Baikal. Statistical analysis of seismic activity and changes in the measured groundwater parameters revealed connection between these processes.

From the 207Pb/204Pb – 206Pb/204Pb diagram, sources of Late Cenozoic basalts from the Changbaishan field, located on the Northeast China – North Korea border, are characterized by two age intervals: Late Archean (3.0–2.8 Ga) and Early Proterozoic (2.2–1.9 Ga). The latter interval coincides with the age estimates of the component of subducted sediments involved in their genesis and its upper boundary coincides with the Pb isotope age of the source of Pleistocene volcanic rocks in Northeast China.

The article deals with the activities of geologist A.V. Lvov during the survey work of the Circum-Baikal railroad and at the beginning of operation of the Transbaikal railroad. A detailed survey of the outcrops formed during the construction of the railroad made it possible to refute the previously proposed conclusions of mining engineers and to give detailed recommendations on the protection of the railroad bed from rockfalls, both during construction and at the beginning of the operation of the railroad. Along with geological studies, work was done to determine the sources of water inflow into the most problematic tunnel on the railroad.

The distribution of Vendian-Cambrian basal terrigenous deposits, which are a search object for oil and gas on the territory of the Lena-Tunguska oil and gas province, is of practical interest, almost all identified accumulations of hydrocarbons are confined to them. A detailed study of the internal structure of the sedimentary strata formed in different lithofacies zones shows that the dominant sign of reservoir development for the territory is lithological homogeneity (heterogeneity).
