This article examines recent changes in French money markets. The main market is the inter-bank money market in balances with the Bank of France and the operations of this market are outlined in some detail. The government bond market dominates the fixed interest markets as a whole; because the activities of these markets impinge on the money markets their operations are also surveyed. The French financial futures market, the Marche a Terme International de France (MATIF), is also covered along with details of the methods of influence used by the Bank of France over money markets.

D. Laidler
This work is devoted to assessing New-Classical ideas, and to asking what of lasting importance this school of macroeconomics has contributed since the early 1970s. It deals in turn with the relationship between New-Classical Economics and Monetarism, the relative explanatory power of these two bodies of doctrine over empirical evidence, and the claims of New-Classical Economics to embody a superior analytic method. The author argues that, although the particular ways in which New-Classical Macroeconomics has applied its basic ideas are unnecessarily restrictive, its stress on equilibrium behaviour conditioned by the state of individual agents’ expectations as a basis for macro modelling is nevertheless valuable.

S. Biasco
The work argues that since the seventies the international economy has oscillated between two kinds of flow structures, one reflected in the upswing and the other in the downswing. In both cases, the international economy suffered, although in different ways, from the disappearance of some of the “safety valves” that had made it possible during the fifties and sixties for ex ante incongruities to be resolved without impeding the generation and transmission of output and income growth. Dealing with the stylised facts, the author brings out similarities in flow structures and in the corresponding adjustment problems recurring in the cycle. The author concentrates on relationships which have influenced the industrial part of the world, and examines them in a systemic approach covering the entire network of world connections.
