This paper addresses Rosario Villari’s scientific activity in the 1960s, when he devoted himself to the writing of the famous History textbook for high schools. Villari’s correspondence with the publisher Laterza enables us to grasp not only the author’s cultural concerns, but also the existential ones. The manuscript submission was repeatedly delayed since he was simultaneously involved in other major works, and mainly in his study into the 1647 Naples revolt against the Spanish rule. Yet, for this reason too Villari managed to condense into his textbook the most recent and stimulating studies and debates of that period, and to transfer the achievements of his own research and of the main international historiography to a schoolbook.

Santo Mazzarino explored the role of the late antique Senate in a plurality of works and from different perspectives. Like the tesserae of a polychrome mosaic, these pages make up a complex and original framework, in which the Senate is configured as a great protagonist of the late antique West. For Mazzarino, fourth- and fifth-century Western society was characterized by a general economic and political strengthening of the senatorial class. This interpretation, fundamentally different from Mommsen’s doctrine, allowed Mazzarino to connect the evolution of the late antique Senate with the crisis of the imperial State. In this way, for Mazzarino, the role of the Senate became a major factor in the periodization of the late antiquity.

Queste possono essere un valido indizio di come le componenti laiche della politica e della societa italiana ricorrevano alla suddetta categoria nel dibattito politico. Generalmente, nella narrazione pubblica, la vittoria in Terra Santa venne presentata come parte di una crociata, assegnando al lemma significati secolarizzati e attualizzanti. L’episodio militare era considerato parte della crociata dell’Intesa in nome della liberta e della civilta contro la Kultur tedesca, un’immagine consolidata della propaganda di guerra basata sulla demonizzazione della figura del nemico. EnglishThis article aims to analyse the reactions of Italian institutions and secular public opinion to the conquest of Jerusalem by the Entente in December 1917. The research focuses primarily on the narrations of the victory in the press, which often also reported the public discourse held at public events, such as the commemorations and political meetings organised to celebrate the conquest. The article reconstructs the behaviours of the institutions, the heterogeneous pro-war forces, and the socialists. The study pays predominant attention to the disseminated representations of the 1917–18 Palestine campaign as a crusade; these images are valuable for comprehending how this category was used in the political debate by the secular groups of Italian politics and society. Principally, the victory in the Holy Land was characterised as a crusade – while, however, giving this term secular and contemporary meanings. The military episode was considered part of the Entente’s crusade in the name of freedom and civilization against the cruelty of German Kultur, a widely spread image of the Great War propaganda based on demonization of the enemy.

EnglishThe Taking as its starting point the fact that there is still no qualitative and quantitative assessment of the impact of the fascist racial laws on Italian classical studies, this article provides the first systematic survey of the subject. Section 1 presents a provisional estimate of the Jewish classical scholars persecuted by Italian authorities between 1938 and 1945, drawing up a list of names including full professors, lecturers, teaching assistants, members of cultural institutions and independent researchers. Section 2 develops a deeper analysis of qualitative data, focusing on two separate lines of research: one dealing with the dramatic changes in the living and working conditions of the victims; the other related to the conduct of classical scholars not affected by the anti-Jewish legislation. All these issues are discussed drawing on biographical information related to some distinguished academics variously involved in the persecution as victims, witnesses or executors: Carlo Anti, Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli, Evaristo Breccia, Gaetano De Sanctis, Mario Attilio Levi, Piero Treves, Arnaldo Momigliano, Medea Norsa, Edoardo Volterra. italianoPartendo dalla constatazione che ad oggi non e ancora disponibile alcuna sintesi complessiva sull’impatto quantitativo e qualitativo delle leggi razziali fasciste sull’antichistica italiana, l’articolo si propone di avviare una ricognizione sistematica sull’argomento. Nella prima parte, il contributo offre una stima provvisoria degli antichisti colpiti dalla normativa antiebraica, elaborando un elenco di nomi variamente ripartiti tra professori ordinari e straordinari, liberi docenti, personale assistente, membri di istituzioni culturali e ricercatori indipendenti. La seconda parte dell’articolo e dedicata alla valutazione qualitativa del fenomeno. In essa, si individuano due direttrici di approfondimento: la prima riguarda le concrete trasformazioni occorse nelle condizioni di vita e di lavoro delle vittime, mentre la seconda analizza il comportamento che assunsero, di fronte alle persecuzioni, gli antichisti non colpiti dalla legislazione antisemita.
