although Probably best known for his seminal and creative work on the Gospel of John, R. Alan Culpepper has produced what many preachers and teachers may regard as his magnum opus: a detailed and thorough analysis of Matthew’s Gospel that will become a standard guide to exegetical study for decades to come. Those who are familiar with Culpepper’s Anatomy of the Fourth Gospel (Augsburg Fortress, 1987) should know that he is doing something different here. The book does not offer a literary analysis of Matthew’s narrative with attention to plot lines, characterization, point of view, and the like. This commentary (like others in the New Testament Library series) draws upon traditional methods of historical criticism: textual analysis, redaction criticism, and other strategies for studying ancient texts.

The spiritual implications of illness were a significant interest for monks of late antiquity, whose concerns reflect common experiences in illness and ways of speaking about illness observable yet today. At the root of the many letters from the sixth-century Gazan monastery of Thavatha is a concern about the meaning of illness, not so much a diagnosis of a medical problem as a discernment of how natural and demonic influences intertwine, and how bodily and mental afflictions make sense within the spiritual “progress” of the monk. For Barsanuphius and John, the great old men of Gaza, the Bible offered models to reframe suffering in line with their ascetic spirituality.

In Deep Calls to Deep William P. Brown responds to the “profound disruption and rancorous division” of current American life with the hope that the book of Psalms might provide a model of conversation “to help cultivate inclusive, mutual dialogue within the church as a transforming witness to our collective life” (p. 9). The character of the psalms as “a little Bible” makes them uniquely suited for this role.

The creation account of Gen 1:1–2:3 is only one of several accounts featured in the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible. The one account that most closely matches its cosmic orientation is the poetic description of creation given in Job 38–41. Nevertheless, both accounts are worlds apart regarding how they describe creation and what they find most important about creation. Their theological and literary differences make for a lively intertextual conversation, as entertained in the interpreter’s imagination. Let the dialogue begin.

In January 2018, a travel seminar from Columbia Theological Seminary had the opportunity to speak with members of the ruling Fidesz party in the Hungarian Parliament. The Fidesz party––led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a right-wing populist––was eager to meet with representatives of a Christian seminary. Orbán’s party members spoke repeatedly about the importance of protecting “Christian values” through aggressive anti-immigration legislation, defining legal marriage in strictly heterosexual terms, and increasing birth rates among ethnic Hungarians. Our largely progressive group was deeply confused. Several students asked various forms of the same question: “What Christian values in particular are you talking about?” The politicians kept responding with the same list of policies. Finally, our translator and guide interrupted and explained, “They want an actual list of values. They want you to talk about the Bible, or Christian theology.” The politicians looked puzzled and could only repeat their list of policy positions.
