Mary L. Coloe
mary coloe’s FeminisT theological commentary on the Gospel of John provides a fitting addition to the Wisdom Commentary Series. Coloe interprets the entire Gospel through the lens of Wisdom. The Wisdom of Solomon is an “essential intertext,” helping to portray the Johannine Jesus as Wisdom incarnate (p. 551). Coloe regularly evokes the female figure of Sophia, along with grammatically appropriate feminine pronouns, to convey the Gospel’s primary theme of God’s creative and life-giving power. Thus, many of the chapter titles, following Coloe’s outline of the Gospel, name Sophia as the active agent in the Gospel: e.g., “Sophia Finds her Home” (John 1:1–18); “The First Days: Sophia Gathers Disciples” (John 1:19–51); and later, “Sophia Celebrates the Jewish Festivals” (5:1–10:42), “Sophia’s Friends are Taught and Comforted” (13:1–17:26), “Sophia Births ‘the Children of God’” (18:1–19:42). The focus on Wisdom is further reinforced by quotations from Jewish wisdom texts that open every chapter, so that, as Coloe states, “her presence does not go unrecognized” (p. xlvi).

Amanda Dillon
How artists portrayed the Bible in large canvas paintings is frequently the subject of scholarly exploration, yet the presentation of biblical texts in contemporary graphic designs has been largely ignored. In this book Amanda Dillon engages multimodal analysis, a method of semiotic discourse, to explore how visual composition, texture, color, directionality, framing, angle, representations, and interactions produce potential meanings for biblical graphic designs. Dillon focuses on the artworks of two American graphic designers—the woodcuts designed by Meinrad Craighead for the Roman Catholic Sunday Missal and Nicholas Markell’s illustrations for the worship books of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America— to present the merits of multimodal analysis for biblical reception history. The Church after Innovation: Questioning Our Obsession with Work, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship by Andrew Root

A pivotal moment in the Gospel of John comes when the resurrected Jesus breathes the Spirit into his disciples and sends them as he was sent. The double thrust of Johannine spirituality is desiring Jesus and desiring what he desires: on the one hand, going deeper into relationship with Jesus in trust, understanding and love; and, on the other hand, going deeper into the world now, inspired by how Jesus was sent, with learning, praying, and loving as the core practices of disciples.

The meeting of two teachers at night suggests that they will be discussing sacred texts, as this was a conventional time for such learned dialogues. Nicodemus initiates the discussion, pointing to the “signs” Jesus has performed; Jesus elaborates further on the deeper meaning of the signs that Nicodemus so far has missed. The story of Jacob in Genesis 28 and the descriptions in the Wisdom of Solomon provide rich intertext for understanding the Nicodemus pericope. In the person of Jesus, the Son of Man has descended from heaven, and the heavens have been opened, enabling access to the reign of God for the one who is born anew.
