Spatial transmission of the economic impacts of COVID-19 through international trade. 2019
IF 1.8 Q2 GEOGRAPHY Pub Date : 2021-01-01 Epub Date: 2021-08-09 DOI: 10.1007/s12076-021-00271-8

While most of the attention to COVID-19 is being focused on the physical transmission of the virus across country borders, there is also an analogous spatial transmission of economic impacts through international trade and global supply chains. This paper presents an analysis of the extent to which the economic shocks of mandatory closures to mitigate the pandemic ripple through the world economy. We utilize a state-of-the-art computable general equilibrium (CGE) model to analyze these interconnections through international trade. We compare estimates of the impacts on US GDP in isolation and then examine the impacts taking into account US trade with China and the rest of the world (ROW). Our analysis indicates that these international trade linkage impacts are generally negative and range from near zero to very large overall, depending on the region, and that own- and cross-country impacts differ by region as well. At the same time, we find that China is able to capitalize on the situation by actually being able to increase its exports through international trade following mandatory closures in other regions. We also confirm that the US economy was relatively insulated from trade linkages with the rest of the world. Sectoral impacts provide further insight into the results.

Lockdown measures and air quality: evidence from Italian provinces.
IF 1.8 Q2 GEOGRAPHY Pub Date : 2021-01-01 Epub Date: 2021-02-21 DOI: 10.1007/s12076-021-00267-4

The aim of this short communication is to estimate the effects of the implementation of more restrictive lockdown measures on pollution levels in Italy. Using a time series of weekly concentrations of PM10, PM2.5 and NO2 for the period 2016-2020 across 71 provinces, we find that the introduction of lockdown measures reduced the air concentration levels of PM10 and NO2 by 17-18%, while their effect on PM2.5 remains unclear. These results indicate that the lockdown had a significant positive impact in terms of lives saved and improved air quality.

Analysis of maize commercialization among smallholder farmers: empirical evidence from North Western Ethiopia

Commercialization in smallholder farming is very important for low income countries since it has a potential to enhance incomes and play a key role in reducing rural poverty. Even though few studies are conducted about agricultural commercialization in Ethiopia, so far there is no study conducted on maize commercialization among smallholder farmers. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the factors that determine market participation and degree of commercialization among smallholder maize producers in North Western Ethiopia. The study was carried out from October 2019 to December 2020. Data were collected from 385 smallholder maize producers using systematic random sampling. Interview schedule, focus group discussion and key informant interview were used to collect the required data. Tobit model was employed to analyse both market participation and intensity of commercialization. From the analysis commercialization was significantly influenced by education level, livestock holding, frequency of extension contact, training, off/non-farm income activity, quantity of maize and lagged price. Based on the findings, smallholder maize producers should be supported regularly by extension agents in order to increase their practical skills which results enhancement of their market participation and intensity of commercialization.
