Since Elinor Ostrom's seminal works in the 90s the analysis on the common lands has had a great development, which have favored complex historical approaches and, more recently, archaeological ones. However, fewer are the studies which tackle the long duration of these common lands, addressing not only their historical origins but also their transformation regarding different historical contexts. In this paper, from a multidisciplinary perspective that includes the analyses of the documentary, archaeological and ethnographical evidence, we will delve into the history of the common lands at the villages of Casaio and Lardeira (Ourense, Galicia). Hence the social, economic and political factors which have influenced the configuration of these spaces as well as the uses and practices exerted on them will be explored. In conclusion, we will value the analyses of conflicts and agencies as the best path to understand the complexities of common lands from a long duration perspective.

The main objective of this work is to develop a model for evaluating the transformations of agri-food systems based on the concept of “food sovereignty”. Analytical models based exclusively on productivist criteria have shown interpretive limitations in the study of complex social systems and their transformations. In this context, the appearance of evaluation models that use a multidimensional perspective is presented as necessary. This multidimensional vision of agri-food systems makes the concept of “food sovereignty” a potential evaluating tool. In this work we identify the values and principles associated with the concept of “food sovereignty”, from which we define a set of evaluable and comparable attributes in space and time. On these attributes we base the development of an evaluation model that allows us to evaluate the transformations of agri-food systems from a historical and holistic perspective.

With a few exceptions, historians have conceded since the work of Labrousse (1932) that grain markets are characterized by a strong seasonality linked to the need for farmers to sell their wheat quickly after harvest. As recent works indicate, the analysis of price movements makes it difficult both to understand the motivations of the stakeholders and to account for the pace of trade. Using statistical methods applied to volumes on 13 markets located in the supply area of the Paris Basin between 1828 and 1852, the analysis of transactions makes it possible to affirm that the phenomena of seasonality are not universal and that they only very imperfectly reflect the functioning of the cereal markets, in particular for maslin, oats and barley, which sometimes represent the bulk of transactions. Seasonality phenomena only concern certain markets, linked to the main trade routes. This study also makes it possible to demonstrate that the modernization of the grain trade in the Paris Basin precedes the establishment of the rail network. It shows too that such modernization is based on the modernization of the local road network and, to a certain extent, on the elimination of traditional markets, particularly for oats. Finally, it makes it possible to propose a typology of markets that takes into account not only the importance of transactions, but their inclusion in regional exchange systems.

This work examines certain aspects of agrarian growth in León from the tenth to twelfth centuries CE in light of recent contributions and studies. It focuses on foral privileges and plantation agreements as mechanisms by which landlords stimulated and intervened in agrarian expansion. The author proposes that as landlords expanded their control over the land, these mechanisms also enabled peasants to obtain lands and expand their farms using the landlord’s property or uncultivated spaces. The possibilities that accompanied this growth were not the same for all peasants. For the poorest, these mechanisms provided ways to obtain remuneration, while for more prosperous or rich peasants they presented opportunities to extend their rural holdings and strengthen their economic position.

The motorisation and diffusion of agricultural tractors has often been explained from neoclassical approaches as a technological change typical of large-scale, wage-labour, cereal-oriented agriculture. However, in this article we analyse the diffusion of tractors in an Atlantic smallholding agricultural system that involved livestock and family labour in Galicia from 1939 to 2000. From an evolutionary economics approach, we examine technological change with special attention to the institutional context, the supply of tractors during the Franco dictatorship, the transition to democracy and the early decades of democracy in Galicia and throughout Spain. The documentation for this work comes from various sources, including the Archivo General de la Administración (AGA), the Rexistro Oficial de Maquinaria Agrícola (ROMA) of the four Galician provinces, and informative literature from agricultural journals and machinery companies in the Biblioteca Nacional de España (BNE). We also analysed innovation and motorisation from a peasant economy approach by doing fieldwork consisting of semi-directed, open-ended interviews and consulting provincial and municipal archives. The main results point to the supply factor as a crucial element in the diffusion of tractors in Galicia and Spain from the 1960s onwards. However, micro analysis based on the peasant economy reveals how the logics behind the adoption of technological changes did not necessarily align with increasing immediate economic benefits, but reflected other cultural considerations such as prestige or reducing the perception of self-exploitation in family work.

EnglishFrom 1908 to 1920, the Belgian Ministry of Colonies organised the first state-led agricultural colonization efforts in Katanga, Belgian Congo. This article examines the complex interactions between public and private actors and how they shaped a colonial agricultural policy. Mission Leplae had a very difficult start and was terminated after ardent discussions in the Belgian Parliament, despite the support of the Agricultural Service. This migration initiative exposed the different views and even tensions between the opinions of technical experts such as agronomists and the ideas of the colonial hommes politiques and private actors, both in Belgium and in the Congo. In this article, the image of a homogeneous colonial state acquires nuance as we unravel and analyse the daily realities and initiatives of these first Belgian agricultural settlers in the broader framework of Belgian colonial politics. When the alliance between the State, the mining sector and agricultural settlers ceased to exist, because European agriculture was not developing fast enough and geopolitical interests had changed, the government stopped supporting the colonization project. After the First World War, the number of Belgian farmers in Katanga began to increase again, mainly thanks to support from the private sector. This article shows how state support was an important but not decisive factor in the survival strategies of a settler community.
