Tourism in Southeast Asia: Challenges and New Directions 东南亚旅游业:挑战与新方向

currency conversion rates from Indonesian rupiah effected some frustration. Most disappointing, however, is the index, which for many practical purposes is useless, omitting as it does major keywords (such as development; economy/economics; education; Java; Islam; Muslim(s); religion) while including numerous redundant and incomplete index entries for authors whose work is cited in the text and bibliography. If readers are willing to persevere and read Kampung, Islam and State in Urban Java in its entirety they will be rewarded with important insights about the practices and processes of making and unmaking community in urban Java. This is a valuable resource book for anyone with an interest in community development, urban society and state-societal relations in modern Indonesia. More broadly, it will appeal to those interested in the changing phenomenon of the kampung across a rapidly urbanising Malay world.

Singing it ‘Local’: The Appropriation of Christianity in the Vula'a Villages of Papua New Guinea 歌唱“本地”:巴布亚新几内亚Vula'a村庄基督教的挪用

The Vula'a people of south-eastern Papua New Guinea have been Christians for more than a century. Through a phenomenology of the transformation of their song and dance styles, this paper sheds light on the nature of the engagement between globalising religions and localised practice. It draws attention to the importance of the appropriation of the Polynesian prophet songs (peroveta), initially as part of the process of conversion undertaken by the London Missionary Society, and presently as an expression of local Christian identity that is shaped by ‘traditional’ exigencies. Song connects the living community and extends the bounds of that community to the non-living, promoting an existential plenitude. I argue that the Christian song styles which replaced traditional dances reproduce a distinctly Melanesian ontology. Further, the instrumental position of early Polynesian mission teachers, both as agents for the new religion and their self-representation as geographically distant ‘kin’ of the Vula'a problematises any easy division between the local and the global.

Investor-Friendly Development Policies: Unsettling Consequences for the Tribal People of Orissa 对投资者友好的发展政策:对奥里萨邦部落人民的不安后果

India has adopted investor-friendly development policies under globalising influences. The present paper examines the adverse social and cultural impacts of these policies on the tribal people of Orissa, a state in eastern India. With its rich natural resource endowment and investor-friendly policies, Orissa is witnessing a private sector investment boom in mining, steel and other sectors. However, investment projects have significantly displaced tribal people. The present policies may boost economic growth, but at the expense of social structures and cultural values that once characterised Orissa's distinctive tribal society. Although the Government of Orissa approved a Resettlement and Rehabilitation Policy in 2006, its formulation has not fully reflected the aspirations of tribal people and, as yet, there has been no independent assessment of its application in projects.

The focus of the present article is marriage between local Balinese Hindus and non-Hindu Indonesians in Jembrana, West Bali. Since the 1950s, Balinese Hindus have fought for the right to claim Hinduism as their officially recognised religious practice (agama) within the parameters of Indonesian citizenship. Now, 50 years later, in the post-bomb(s) Bali world, ethnicity (suku) and Hinduism are increasingly conflated to ‘authenticate’ Balinese identity. This conflation has been aided by the popular ethnic Balinese discourse known as ‘Ajeg Bali’ (‘Bali standing strong’). The present paper discusses tensions between national citizenship and local identities, particularly as challenged by mixed marriages. Increasingly, throughout Indonesia religion has become a substitute for ethnicity that, in Hindu Bali, is also complicated by heredity caste. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Bali over the past 10 years, the present paper examines marriages that cross social boundaries and highlights responses to mixed marriages between Hindus and Muslims in the Jembrana regency. Jembrana is significant to the discussion of mixed marriages because of its proximity to East Java across the Bali Strait and the histories shared by these regions.

Family Portraits in Rural Indonesia: Photography and Ethnographic Knowledge 印度尼西亚农村的家庭肖像:摄影和民族志知识

This paper explores a number of family and individual portraits taken on fieldwork in rural Indonesian villages, and how they can be used to reveal ethnographic information about the subjects. Formal family photographs are generally characterised by strict conventions and stiff groupings, suggesting that they are an artificial construction rather than a ‘natural’ representation of a group of people. And yet ‘natural’ photographs are arguably no more ‘natural’ than ‘posed’ photographs. In the former case, the photographer chooses the time and framing of the shot. In the latter, the subjects themselves exercise agency in determining how and when the photograph is taken. Thus family portraits reveal a wealth of ethnographic knowledge on representations of the self and agency in representing oneself to others. Photographs work dialectically with text, to allow various representations and interpretations of the subjects and the argument, to produce ethnographic knowledge that is significantly informed by a visual component.

Habitus, Practice and Agency of Young East Timorese Asylum Seekers in Australia 澳大利亚东帝汶寻求庇护青年的习惯、做法和代理

This article explores the process of agency and empowerment through a case study of a group of young East Timorese asylum seekers who arrived in Australia during the 1990s. Using Bourdieu's concept of habitus and his theory of practice, the article considers how the asylum seekers dealt with the challenges of exile and adjusted to Australian society. In addition to the difficulties asylum seekers normally face in exile, such as limited financial and social support and coping with trauma and loss, the East Timorese who arrived during the 1990s faced particular challenges due to the Australian Government's treatment of their cases. The article argues that, despite their vulnerable and liminal position, the asylum seekers were not just passive victims. On the contrary, they were active agents who through practice, consciously or unconsciously, dealt with their liminal situation. Their power to act was positively affected by their young age upon arrival.

This case study illustrates one effort to create a place for traditional justice, including formal recognition of both the authorities and the mechanisms for customary land and forest control, within the national system. Reflecting an explicitly political intention to undo the customary authorities’ displacement under the Indonesian administration, the Oecusse enclave district Agriculture Department also found this a pragmatic strategy to extend their forest control. Granting significant autonomy and power to customary leaders, especially in naming protected areas and setting village-specific fines, curtailed but did not eliminate district government involvement in enforcing the regulations. Resulting local environmental regulations reflect a blend of government and customary land use priorities.

In the 1940s, Cucumber Lane was one of the largest shanty towns in Shanghai. After the communist takeover in 1949, its development took place in parallel with the major state-led projects that were launched in subsequent years. The community was turned from an urban slum into a socialist ‘model community’ in the 1960s, then into a ‘civilised small community’ in the 1990s. This paper aims to explore in general the process of negotiating identity on the part of the residents at these two historical junctures, and in particular the conditions under which one particular discourse of identity seemed to result in the hegemony of the residents, whereas the other invoked complicated sentiments filled with apathy and dissent, grumbles and hopes.
