The study proposes a simple procedure for evaluating the suitability of various locations for the installation of micro-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. The main aim of the study was to determine the applicability of GIS tools for assessing the suitability of different locations for solar energy generation. The applicability of open-source databases in geoinformation analyses was emphasized. The study was conducted in the urban municipality of Mrągowo in the Region of Warmia and Mazury, Poland. Mrągowo is characterized by considerable physiographic diversity, which influenced the results of the study. The evaluation focused on rooftops which are most widely used for the installation of micro-scale solar PV systems. For the purpose of generalization, the results of the evaluation were presented for the districts of Mrągowo, so as to assist state agencies, local governments, and non-public institutions in implementing local policies that support renewable energy generation. The average amount of energy (MWh) that can be generated per building and the total amount of energy (MWh) that can be generated in cadastral districts were calculated to determine the solar energy potential of the study site

The impact of travel distance on travel planning and motives of travelling represents a notable research gap. This study aims to demonstrate that impacts of intention predictors are different, since longer distance increases complexities of planning; also – that a long-haul travelling is driven by different motives than short-haul travelling. The study is based on analysis of survey data from Lithuania. The findings showed differences in how beliefs impact intentions to travel to distant and nearby cities. Behavioural and normative beliefs had stronger impacts on intentions for nearby destinations, whereas control beliefs had strong impacts for distant destinations. Also, the sets of travel motives for long-haul destinations and for short-haul destinations had different structure of motives. The findings deepen understanding of travel distance as an aspect of travelling that differentiates impacts of travel intention antecedents and generates different sets of travel motives for long-haul and short-haul travelling.

Population aging is a key risk for the future of Europe. Th e Old Continent has to face ever-stronger new demographic trends and fi nd eff ective strategies to address them. In this study, we evaluate the progress of population aging in Europe in the period of 2008–2021. Th e broad time span of our considerations concerns the years 1960–2100. We present our new typological approach to the areas of unbalanced age structure. Its classifi cation includes four groups of countries with various distribution of aging measures, i.e., the percentage of people aged 65 and over and the dynamics of its growth. We observe that the largest group is composed of countries exceeding arithmetic means for both above-mentioned aging measures, which are located mainly in Eastern and Southern Europe. According to stages of aging by median age, most of these countries reached the stage of very old population in the 1990s

Global Cities (GCs) and Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) belong to a group of entities that shape the modern world economy in the most distinct way. So far, both of them have been given a lot of attention in the literature, but few studies have been written linking these two important threads of deliberation remaining the aspects of relationships between GCs and MNEs relatively unexplored. This is surprising as GCs and MNEs are not sole players but symbionts in the world economy. Hence, the intention of the authors – and the aim of this paper – is to overview these issues and connect GC and MNE threads in order to provide a platform for future research studies. By adopting an evolutionary approach and integrating the perspectives of economic geography, urban studies and international business, the paper identifies several research areas that may be fundamental to the GC/MNE discussion. They have been grouped in the following five thematic categories: global trends, international and country-specific factors; heterogeneity and transformation of global cities; MNE internationalization motivations and different market entry modes; global cities and global value chains; outcomes of MNE activity.

Evaluating territorial attractiveness can result in several interpretations due to the multidimensional nature of the concept, starting from economy and expanding into many fi elds such as geography and social studies, in this paper, we attempt to analyze the existing economic-urban dilemma in the north-east region of Algeria by evaluating the attractiveness of its two national metropolises as separate territorial units. Th e main objective of the study was to explore the possibility of evaluating the three facets of attractiveness simultaneously in a bipolar cities system. Our method is not in itself new; it has been used as a model for assessment in many other regions of the developing world suff ering from lack of data and economic-urban issues, but this is the fi rst time it has been used to assess attractiveness. Th is multi-factorial model with synthetic indicators will help us to have a general view of the issue and to defi ne strengths and weaknesses of both territorial units. However, the limits of this methodology will be the percentage uncertainty that lies in the subjectivity of the weighting step performed by experts.

Th e present paper is a micro-level study aimed at analyzing the impacts of riverbank erosion on riparian society. To fulfi ll the objective, the study has been carried out from two distinctive perspectives; viz. general outlooks and specifi c inquiry. For the general outlook, the Ganga-Padma river in its lower reach downstream of Farakka Barrage in Samserganj Community Development Block has been explored in terms of channel shift ing using multi-dated satellite images. For specifi c inquiry, the eff ects of riverbank erosion on society have been studied using primary data in two selected active bank-erosion-prone cadastral units. Th e results show that recurrent bank erosion has brought a drastic change in the social fabric and caused huge losses rendering riparian inhabitants quite vulnerable, since most of the people in the study units are dependent on land-based economy and belong to poor economic groups. Th ese situations necessitate signifi cant outside assistance. However, there is a signifi cant diff erence (χ2 = 10.85 at p<0.01) in terms of assistance received during the previous year between the two selected study units.

Th e phenomenon of social network services (SNSs), investigated by numerous scientifi c disciplines, can hardly be overestimated in today's globalised world. However, there is a lack of studies focused on the spatial aspects of SNS development and operation. Th is article deals with peculiarities of the current distribution and main spatial tendencies of the SNS Facebook’s development in Central and Eastern Europe on the examples of Poland, Ukraine and Belarus. The spatial distribution of Facebook has the following patterns in the studied area: a relationship between the type of development of the country and the level of Facebook penetration (i.e., the “Facebook Divide”); an increase in number of users and penetration rate in developed areas (capital regions, major socio-economic centres); a progressive increase in the share of users from east to west; a large concentration of users in capitals and regional centres; the fi lter function of the state border

Th e aim of the paper is to specify the main patterns – and identify the basic determinants – of the formation of the Polish electoral space aft er 2001, with particular emphasis on factors of a geographical nature, against the background of the rivalry between the two main actors of the political scene, i.e., Civic Platform (Platforma Obywatelska, PO) and Law and Justice (Prawo i Sprawiedliwość, PiS). Using spatial econometric tools, it was found that the PO–PiS oligopoly on the Polish political party market results in increasing spatial clustering and geographical polarisation of voters of both parties in the form of urban–rural heterogeneity and east–west divergence. Th ese phenomena are explained by processes of alignment and convergence of individuals' views according to the logic of localised entrenchment of dominant opinions and consolidation of preferences within historically shaped regional arrangements according to the path dependency principle.

Th e use of tactical urbanism and creative placemaking in the revitalisation of public space has received growing research interest. In Johannesburg, there is evidence of these approaches in the revitalisation of Th e Wilds, a nature reserve located near the inner-city. Th e Wilds experienced neglect and decline due to increased crime. By the mid-2010s, an artist championed the bottom-up revitalisation of Th e Wilds through routine maintenance, the introduction of public art, and events to encourage engagement with the space. Th is study draws on personal communication and semi-structured interviews with key informants and utilises netnography. It was found that the use of public art and social media resulted in an increase in visitor numbers and volunteers who assisted in the maintenance, restoration and engagement with the space. Th e use of tactical urbanism and creative placemaking, however, has brought volunteers into conflict with the city over the usage and co-management of The Wilds.
