Background: Long-term care homes for older and disabled adults, including those who are living with dementia, facilitate a diversity of recreational activities and program as social interventions. The relationships between interventional elements and participant impacts are not well understood.

Methods: This paper explores a poetry methodology and reports the findings from a pilot test of Dementia Arts Mapping, a novel ethnographic observational technique, to better understand impacts of poetry and recreation on people living with dementia in long-term care settings. Between 2017 and 2020, at 17 skilled nursing facilities throughout Wisconsin, researchers situated within care homes observed participants during diverse activities.

Results: We found poetry workshops surpassed other activities in eliciting self-expression.

Conclusions: Dementia Arts Mapping is an effective instrument for generating insights about dementia care and may be further enhanced for future use in research to inform care provision to foster meaningful engagement with people with dementia.

The Black Saturday bushfire disaster: found poetry for arts-based knowledge translation in disaster risk and climate change communication.

This research uses the arts-based research method of found poetry, the creation of poem-like prose from existing text, to share the lived experience of the 2009 Black Saturday bushfire disaster in Australia which killed 173 people. After outlining the processes, this paper applies found poetry to an existing text: Peg Fraser's book, Black Saturday. Five found poems are shared, each conveying a different element of the disaster experience: "Armageddon," "Go - GET OUT," "Bushfire Chook," "Resisting the Poetry Tree," and "Lucky". Compared to normal prose, there is an authentic and vulnerable vibrancy to the language of these found poems, which offer unexpected visceral insight into the bushfire experience - the fear, the heat, the confusion, the anger, and the loss. Poetry, which resonates and draws people in emotionally, has significant potential as arts-based knowledge translation in disaster risk and climate change communication.

Background: Access to pain relief is a fundamental human right, yet child and adolescent pain can remain unheard and untreated . We aimed to understand and testify to young people's pain experiences.

Methods: This is the first systematic review of qualitative research to present findings as poetry. We followed stages of meta-ethnography, using verbatim poetry to express the findings.

Results: We included 189 studies incorporating 5875 young people with pain across a range of conditions and contexts. Our findings highlight the ambiguity of pain . This ambiguity is exacerbated by unpredictability, absence of diagnosis, and a tangle of bio-psycho-social factors.

Conclusions: Verbatim poetry can help us to imagine what it is like to live in someone else' shoes. Poetry can therefore contribute to compassionate and high-quality care. Future research might explore the role of poetry inmore inclusive research.

Background: PhotoVoice - a series of workshops involving participatory photography and narrative-building - was employed in the rural town of Comerío, Puerto Rico (PR) to describe disaster recovery in a rural setting and foster policy dialogue.

Methods: Using PhotoVoice workshops and ethnographic observations, the project describes how women affiliated with a local community-based organization described the priorities for disaster recovery in visual images and narratives. We draw analytically upon theories of intersectionality and coloniality to describe socio-structural and community factors that shape community health in the context of ongoing disasters.

Results: Analysis indicated that gender and generational differences are key intersecting factors that mediate adaptation to disasters in this setting.

Conclusions: The project, which has already shown impacts on local policy decisions, demonstrates the possibilities of using PhotoVoice to foster community-driven crisis responses and policy dialogue that can shape health promotion and disaster recovery responses in PR and elsewhere.

Background: This review documents arts applied to health interventions and health research in Ghana, examines evidence of their impact on health outcomes, and identifies research and practice gaps.

Methods: Eight databases (MEDLINE, Academic Search Complete, CINAHL, Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition, Humanities International Complete, Scopus, African Journals Online and PsycINFO) were searched for articles published between 2000 and 2022. Following screening, seventeen articles reporting sixteen eligible studies were selected.

Results: Ten art forms (including comedy, music, theatre) were applied to eight health conditions (including HIV/AIDS, mental illness, COVID-19). Most studies involved artists and artist-researchers. The majority of studies were cross-sectional. Impact was reported on health education, illness management and community health development. Some studies engaged with health policy communities, but none reported impact on health policy change.

Conclusion: Creative arts have a reported measurable impact on selected health outcomes in Ghana. Participatory arts-based projects have the greatest potential for sustainable and transformational social health impact.
