Wearing the Ghanaian border: performing borders through the National Friday Wear programme
IF 2.4 Q2 GEOGRAPHY Pub Date : 2021-01-02 DOI: 10.1080/13562576.2021.1879635
L. Axelsson
ABSTRACT This paper argues that cultural and political strategies that appeal to citizenship and national identity can be used to regulate flows across borders. In this process, citizen bodies may be enrolled as key agents. Drawing on the National Friday Wear programme – a Ghanaian government initiative intended to encourage white-collar workers to dress their bodies in domestically produced textiles on Fridays to reduce the consumption, and thereby also the inflow, of foreign textiles – the paper illustrates that citizen bodies are both spaces upon which borders are inscribed and geopolitical actors that perform borders on behalf of the nation-state.

Between party politics and local identification: political responses to a rural protest

ABSTRACT How do politicians make sense of situations in which they may find themselves caught up in between opposing loyalties, for example, party loyalty on the one hand and loyalty to neighbours and friends or ideological convictions on the other? Based on interviews about a rural occupation in protest of a political decision in a small community in Northern Sweden, this paper explores the approaches of local politicians to the protest and to the people involved in it. The results show how discourses of geographic space and party-political loyalty structured the negotiated responsibility for the situation, affected the politicians’ descriptions of the occupation as such, and made support for the protest become more or less difficult.

Ontological politics and the struggle for the Guarani-Kaiowa world
IF 2.4 Q2 GEOGRAPHY Pub Date : 2020-09-01 DOI: 10.1080/13562576.2020.1814727
A. Ioris
ABSTRACT The article examines the political perspective of Indigenous peoples in their effort to resist aggression and reclaim back land and opportunities lost to mainstream development. The discussion is based on an investigation into how the Guarani-Kaiowa of South America have been able to maintain a socio-spatial identity, react to specific socio-spatial injustices and at the same time associate their struggle with the campaign of other Indigenous groups. This concrete example is instrumental for demonstrating the application of political ontology as a tool for interrogating the impacts of Western modernity, the advance of agrarian capitalism and commonalities with related subaltern politics.

Borders resurgent: towards a post-Covid-19 global border regime?

ABSTRACT An immediate political geographic consequence of the global pandemic is the rapid imposition of national and subnational borders, particularly where cross-boundary openness and integration was prevalent. Borders are being reinvigorated as a strategy to contain the virus, which securitizes daily life beyond traditional border sites. We see this resurgence as indicating a new global border regime which is manifest at a variety of scales and will likely outlive the pandemic. Our discussion centers on several possible implications of this process, including further restrictions on immigration and movement, a heightened politics of regionalism, and an expansion of geographic tracking and surveillance.
