Drawing on decolonizing methods and relational–cultural theory, we argue for the importance of relationship building and collaboration in counselor education research. Based on our partnerships with refugees and migrants, survivors of interpersonal violence, and youth of color, we share concrete strategies for fostering relationships and collaboration in counseling research.

Experiential Reflecting Teams in the Training of Group Counselors
IF 1.6 Q3 PSYCHOLOGY, APPLIED Pub Date : 2025-02-12 DOI: 10.1002/ceas.12339
Melissa C. Henry, Hongryun Woo, Emily L. Zoernig, Noah C. Schmidt, Brennen Campbell, Whitney Bozarth

Using a comparative case study design, this study explored the reflecting team (RT) method in group training among counseling students (n = 26). Participants were assigned to either the experiential group (EG) or RT, and group climate was assessed using the Group Climate Questionnaire (GCQ-S). Results indicated that RT members reported higher avoidance, but similar levels of engagement and conflict compared to EG members. Rooted in social constructivist theory, the study explored experiential instruction in group training.

Client perceptions of counselor cognitive complexity
IF 1.4 Q3 PSYCHOLOGY, APPLIED Pub Date : 2025-02-09 DOI: 10.1002/ceas.12333
Alexandra Gantt-Howrey

The present study is a quantitative investigation of clients’ (N = 390) perceptions of their counselors’ cognitive complexity (CC) as measured by the Counselor CC (3C)-Client Perceptions Scale. Results indicate a significant relationship between perceived CC and client satisfaction. Participants’ perceptions that counselors understood their worldview and formed appropriate goals significantly predicted client satisfaction. Implications for how counselor educators and supervisors may use clients’ perspectives to inform the enhancement of counseling students’ CC conclude.

Exploring counselor experiences of training in the PR6 resilience model
IF 1.4 Q3 PSYCHOLOGY, APPLIED Pub Date : 2024-11-14 DOI: 10.1002/ceas.12330

Resilience-related knowledge and skills are part of all counselors-in-training foundational curriculum. We used interpretative phenomenological analysis to explore nine novice counselors’ perceived training experiences in the Predictive 6 Factor (PR6) model of resilience. We identified the following group experiential themes: value of the neuroscience information and PR6 model, counselors’ personal resonance and buy-in, and considerations for practice. We also identified nine subthemes representing more nuanced elements of the larger themes.

We investigated the relationship between discrimination, wellness, and social support among counseling students who identified as Black, Indigenous, or people of color (BIPOC). Results indicated that perceived discrimination negatively predicted counseling students’ wellness, and social support played a buffering role in the negative effect of perceived discrimination on wellness.

The recruitment and retention of minoritized students is critical for diversifying the counseling profession. Accreditation standards and scholarship provide little guidance on best practices. We sampled 38 administrators from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs to understand recruitment and retention practices for minoritized students. We found four themes and provide implications for counselor education.

Faculty-led study abroad programs promote professional and personal development for counseling students. Through interpretive phenomenological analysis, we explored how Latine bilingual counseling students (= 7) experienced a study abroad utilizing Deliberate Psychological Education. We organized findings into three themes that spoke to cultural immersion, presence and validation, and connections.

We conducted a concurrent nested mixed-methods exploration of counselor trainee outcomes of a social determinants of mental health (SDMH)-focused fieldwork course. Seven trainees completed a pre-/post-course SDMH competence scale and nine weekly journal entries. Results of a paired samples t-test and deductive content analysis suggest increased SDMH competence and efforts to learn about and address clients’ SDMH challenges throughout the semester. Implications for counselor training conclude.
