Frenemies: Acting like Friends but Feeling like Enemies
IF 1.1 Q3 COMMUNICATION Pub Date : 2023-02-05 DOI: 10.1080/10570314.2022.2146458

Frenemies, partners who appear to be friends on the surface, yet purport to dislike one another, have received less attention in the scholarly literature than friends and enemies. To explore the discordant and complicated relationship known as frenemyship, 72 undergraduates completed an open-ended online survey that was coded using inductive thematic analysis. Findings indicate that frenemies play a significant role in people’s lives and represent not just a behavioral form (e.g., relational aggression), but an independent relational type characterized by disguised disdain. Results indicate that people maintain frenemyships because relational benefits (e.g., saving face, maintaining social networks, and sustaining potential instrumental connections) outweigh negative ramifications of dealing with the relationship or terminating it. From these findings, we propose a definition of frenemyship as a discordant relationship in which one or both parties engage in cordial interactions, while simultaneously evaluating the other in a distrustful, unfriendly, even hostile, manner.

Navigating Relational Escalation: Exploring the Associations among Dialectical Tensions, Relationship Stages, and Attachment

This study explored the connections among relational dialectics, the relational stage model, and attachment by assessing how individuals with differing attachment tendencies navigate conflicting desires at various stages of romantic relationships. Findings from a cross-sectional survey (N = 188) revealed that dialectical tensions were less intense for individuals in more advanced stages of relationship development compared to those in the earlier stages. Further, attachment anxiety and avoidance demonstrated positive associations with feelings of the dialectical tensions. Although interaction effects with relationship stage and attachment were not observed, significant main effects provide important implications for interpersonal scholarship.

Enforcing Unbreakable Laws: Detective Fiction and the Rhetoric of Economic Orthodoxy

This essay studies the “Henry Spearman” detective novel series, wherein a fictional Harvard economist applies economic theory to solve murder cases. Written by professional economists under a pen name, the novels, designed for entertainment and to be assigned to economics courses, espouse a narrow vision of economic common sense through what I call the detective’s “economic law enforcement.” By interrogating the detective’s retroactive construction of symbolic guilt upon suspects, and the authors’ use of prosopopœia in verbal debates over economic concepts, it is possible to see how economic orthodoxy is reproduced through the mechanisms of speech.
