Women are underrepresented in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). There are many initiatives which have been implemented in efforts to change this imbalance, including in primary, secondary and third-level institutions. Some are supported by governments, for example, by Science Foundation Ireland in Ireland, by professional bodies, such as IEEE, and by companies. Initiatives are targeted at STEM in general, and at subsets of the discipline. In fact, there are many STEM intervention programmes worldwide from which we in software engineering can learn. The logistics around planning and implementing a STEM intervention programme are many. This is compounded when a programme must quickly pivot and change how it is provided due to external factors. While this paper presents our experience on one STEM intervention, the University of Limerick-Lero/Johnson & Johnson WiSTEM2D (Women in STEM, Manufacturing and Design) programme, it also discusses and describes the challenges and the opportunities that became apparent when it had to completely change how it was deployed and implemented due to the COVID-19 pandemic. https://doi.org/10.1145/3524501.3527596

Hackathons are events that originated as competitions for programmers but transformed into project-oriented events given in different contexts and with different sets of goals. Despite the wide range of topics and business fields covered by current hackathons, a lot of events lack female participants. The lack of gender diversity is a problem, as diversity is a well-known and significant contributor to idea generation, innovativeness, and the efficiency of making novel development. This article covered the current literature, identifying the reasons why women show low interest in hackathon participation. Among these reasons, there is impostor syndrome caused by gender stereotypes, the difference between male and female experiences, for example in video games, as well as the undeserved bad reputation of hackathons as sleepless events, aimed only for specialists and guru programmers. However, hackathon organizers have found positive experiences of attracting more women to their events by implementing female-inclusive measures. Based on the literature, we have compiled recommendations to be considered and implemented in event organizing strategies, implementation models, and promotional approaches to achieve better gender balance at hackathon events.

Gender bias is prevalent in all walks of life from schools to colleges, corporate as well as government offices. This has led to the under-representation of the female gender in many professions. Most of the Artificial Intelligence-Natural Language Processing (AI-NLP) models learning from these underrepresented real world datasets amplify the bias in many cases, resulting in traditional biases being reinforced. In this paper, we have discussed how gender bias became ingrained in our society and how it results in the underrepresentation of the female gender in several fields such as education, healthcare, STEM, film industry, food industry, and sports. We shed some light on how traditional gender bias is reflected in AI-NLP systems such as automated resume screening, machine translation, text generation, etc. Future prospects of these AI-NLP applications need to include possible solutions to these existing biased AI-NLP applications, such as debiasing the word embeddings and having guidelines for more ethical and transparent standards. Md. Hackathons are thematic events of short duration that focus on the development of software prototypes. These events normally last from one to three days and they are increasingly popular. However, the interest of women in these events is still low. This paper aims to investigate, from a social-cognitive perspective, how experiences of more inclusive hackathon formats affect interest in hackathons themselves. We adopted autoethnography to systematize the first author's experience as a team participant in a female-focused hackathon. The results suggest that event formats can affect participants’ self-efficacy beliefs, outcome expectations and goals. These beliefs may influence perceptions of their potential performance on the team, confidence in their own skills in the technology and perceptions of opportunities in the technology market. Luciana A. In Bangladesh, there is a significant difference between the number of females and males working as Information Technology (IT) professionals. There are a concerningly less number of females choosing IT as a major as well as entering and staying in the IT industry. It is important to address this gap in participation as it will help in tackling gender inequality. This will result in nurturing a more diverse source of ideas in the industry. This study explored the factors influencing female underrepresentation in IT in the context of Bangladesh through a two-staged survey-based study and a focus group discussion. It also explored the possible solutions to the problem and proposed an awareness-based approach to address this issue. The data collected in the study provided evidence that this awareness-based approach can alleviate the problem to a great extent. The largest gender gaps within entrepreneurship today are in the Information Technology (IT) sector, where male entrepreneurs are more than twice as likely as women to operate. The current gender gap in tech society needs to decrease, and more women who are involved in computer science through study or labor should consider tech entrepreneurship as a career path. This is crucial for developing technology suitable for the whole society. That is why the research objective of this study is to provide information about the relation between IT and gender from the entrepreneurship point of view, using the Systematic Mapping Study (SMS) methodology for this purpose. The results obtained show the original research that exist on gender equality and tech entrepreneurship, in addition to a coverage of various challenges and success factors connected to female tech entrepreneurs. Likewise, they also revealed that there is still a lack of existing studies on the intersection of gender equality and tech entrepreneurship, but it is slowly increasing. Therefore, it is necessary to continue working in this area and the current success factors obtained from female tech entrepreneurs should work as guidelines to help women pursue a career within tech entrepreneurship. J. Purpose The purpose of this essay is to highlight the urgent need for antiracism resource generation in organizations today Design/methodology/approach This essay weaves together popular press articles, academic writings and the authors' lived experiences to summarize, clarify and extend the work needed inside of organizations and academia to dismantle systemic racism Findings We define antiracist resources as personal and material assets that counteract systemic racism through informing and equipping antiracist actions, and identify three resources-adopting a long-term view for learning the history of racism, embracing discomfort to acknowledge racist mistakes and systematically assess how organizational structures maintain white supremacy-for organizations to address systemic racism Research limitations/implications While there is a critical need for more antiracism research, there are standards and guidelines that should be followed to conduct that research responsibly with antiracism enacted in research design, methodology decisions and publication practices Practical implications The authors call for organizations to directly counter-racism via antiracism resources and offer examples for how these resources can inform and equip companies to create equitable workplaces Originality/value This essay offers: (a) an updated, timely perspective on effective responses to systemic racism (e g police brutality and COVID-19), (b) a detailed discussion of antiracism resources and (c) specific implications for antiracism work in organizational research
