Background: Error reporting is crucial for organisational learning and improving patient safety in hospitals, yet errors are significantly underreported.

Aims: The aim of this study was to understand how the nursing team dynamics of leader inclusiveness, safety climate and psychological safety affected the willingness of hospital nurses to report errors.

Methods: The study was a cross-sectional design. Self-administered surveys were used to collect data from nurses and nurse managers. Data were analysed using linear mixed models. Bootstrap confidence intervals with bias correction were used for mediation analysis.

Results: Leader inclusiveness, safety climate and psychological safety significantly affected willingness to report errors. Psychological safety mediated the relationship between safety climate and error reporting as well as the relationship between leader inclusiveness and error reporting.

Conclusion: The findings of the study emphasise the importance of nursing team dynamics to error reporting and suggest that psychological safety is especially important to error reporting.

Promoting generalisation in qualitative nursing research using the multiple case narrative approach: a methodological overview. 使用多案例叙述方法促进定性护理研究的泛化:方法综述。
IF 3.1 Q2 NURSING Pub Date : 2023-08-01 Epub Date: 2023-10-25 DOI: 10.1177/17449871231194177

Background: The ability to generalise research generated findings to different contexts is a significant, yet overlooked, feature in qualitative studies conducted in nursing, where evidence-based clinical practice is highly regarded. The multiple case narrative is a constructivist-narrative approach, claimed to not only have the potential for analytical and case-to-case generalisation but also sample-to-population generalisation.

Methods: This paper provides an overview of multiple case narrative by comparing it with similar methodologies, reviewing studies that have used this approach and critically evaluating its capacity for producing generalisable results.

Results: The multiple case narrative approach addresses limitations of collective case study, case survey and meta-ethnography by employing greater sample sizes and more generalisable results. Most studies previously using this approach have been performed in the education field and with the purpose of overcoming sample size limitations in qualitative research. The approach offers a uniquely systematic approach to analysis by finding associations between categories generated from collective analysis of large number of cases and providing the potential for sample to population generalisation.

Conclusion: Multiple case narrative, which to date has been underutilised, is a systematic approach with characteristics that make it an efficient research technique to provide valid qualitative evidence.

Background: Intercultural communication is one of the most important competencies of nurses that enhances the health-care process and increases the quality of care in multicultural environments.

Aims: This study was conducted to revise the Turkish Personal Report of Intercultural Communication Apprehension Scale.

Methods: This methodological study was conducted between November and December 2021 with 321 female and 96 male university students (mean age 20.78 ± 2.04 (min. = 17, max. = 37)). Revision of the Turkish Personal Report of Intercultural Communication Apprehension Scale included factor analysis, test-retest analysis for reliability, correlation-based item analysis, Cronbach's alpha internal consistency analysis and confirmatory factor analysis.

Results: Analysis results showed that the scale was composed of 12 items and explained 56.79% of the total variance. Cronbach's alpha value of the scale was found to be 0.88. Internal consistency analysis included item-total score correlations; the values were found to range between -0.59 and 0.79 and the 14th item with negative item-total score correlations was excluded from the scale.

Conclusion: The results of this study show that the revised Turkish Personal Report of Intercultural Communication Apprehension Scale is a valid and reliable tool.

A systematic review of informatics competencies: requirements for nurse managers in healthcare organisations. 信息学能力系统回顾:对医疗机构护士管理人员的要求。
IF 3.1 Q2 NURSING Pub Date : 2023-06-01 Epub Date: 2023-07-31 DOI: 10.1177/17449871231177165

Introduction: One vital strategy for the success of healthcare organisations currently resides in the capacity of the nurse managers (NMs) to develop informatics competencies in management.

Aim: The aim of this review was to synthesise the evidence related to the informatics competencies of NMs in healthcare settings.

Methods: The databases of PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and Education Resources Information Center were searched. All publications were accepted if they had been published in English and full texts were accessible. The study was carried out using a systematic literature search of work published between January 2000 and December 2021. The Endnote v.17 software was used to facilitate reference management. Quality assessment of publications was carried out independently by two reviewers using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme guidance. A descriptive summary with data tables was produced to summarise the literature.

Results: After screening the search results, 12 studies published between the period 2001 and 2019 met the inclusion criteria. Analysis of the included studies led to the classification of informatics competencies in three main themes: skills related to work with computers (four sub-themes), informatics skills of NMs (three sub-themes) and knowledge of NMs about informatics (five sub-themes).

Conclusion: These systematic review results can lead to the identification of informatics competency gaps and recommend and provide solutions to address these gaps and increase competencies for nursing managers.
