ABSTRACT Oncology social work provides services to individuals, groups, families, caregivers, and communities. As part of a larger audit of social work activities across 17 Victorian health services, a subanalysis was conducted to investigate social work practice in oncology (n = 49) compared to general medicine settings (n = 55). Social workers in oncology were more likely to address issues of adjustment to the condition, anxiety, and finances. Social workers in general medicine more frequently focused on dementia, elder abuse, and transition of clients to Residential Assisted Care. Oncology social workers conducted higher frequencies of interventions involving advocacy, brief or single session intervention, and counselling compared to general medicine, where discharge planning was significantly more common. Finally, oncology social workers were more likely to have used a narrative or supportive care model compared to the general medicine group. These findings can help better target training and upskilling of social workers for practice in different healthcare settings. IMPLICATIONS Audits of practice assist to describe the complex array of issues addressed by social work both within oncology and the broader healthcare settings. Identifying key interventions and emphases pertaining to oncology provides a focus for future evaluation of the effectiveness of social work practice across key domains within oncology. Better understanding of practice can lay the groundwork for targeted training programs to enhance social worker knowledge and skills in oncology and broader healthcare.

ABSTRACT The role of fathers in the provision of care for their children is changing. This research explored fathers’ experiences of caring for their child with cancer within a paediatric oncology ward in Australia and to what extent, if any, gendered expectations played a role in their experiences. Semistructured interviews were conducted with six fathers to explore their current experiences of caring. This study found that their child’s individual journey with cancer played a central role in the experiences of fathers, as this shaped engagement with staff, management of caring and work responsibilities, and the kinds of support available. The study identifies barriers as well as positive experiences for fathers during hospital treatments. Recommendations for future research are suggested to further explore how social workers and other health practitioners can support fathers in their caring role. IMPLICATIONS Fathers have gendered experiences in caring for their child with cancer, although this is not always recognised. Ideals and expectations of the role of fathers are changing, leading to differing explanations of how fathers define and enact fatherhood. Further research is needed to explore how social workers can better engage with fathers to further understand their specific needs in caring for their child with cancer.

ABSTRACT It has been increasingly recognised that sociohistoric exclusion must be understood, and systemic barriers actively challenged in order for Indigenous students to safely access, participate, and succeed in tertiary education. This includes the field education experience, which is considered core to developing professional identity and competence across a number of professions. This scoping review gathered scarce research literature about Indigenous students’ experience of placement. A systematic search identified 12 sources from 11 studies that described these experiences across the disciplines of social work, education, and nursing. Findings revealed the motivating and challenging lived experiences of Indigenous students, including experiences of racism and discrimination on placement, misrecognition and misrepresentation, and the importance of relationships in facilitating positive placement experiences. Findings also indicated the relevance of implementing unique practice frameworks and offered recommendations for placement for Indigenous students. IMPLICATIONS The placement experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students should be understood through student-led research and voice. Organisers of field education programs can increase their commitment to culturally safe placements by reviewing their processes in the light of this knowledge.

ABSTRACT Aboriginal women experiencing sexual violence may not always access support services when needed, nor receive the most appropriate support when they do. Recent research suggests place-based, Aboriginal-led initiatives to respond to family and sexual violence in Aboriginal communities offer the best chance for developing effective responses. This article describes an innovative participatory action research project aiming to improve service delivery for Aboriginal women from the Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (NPY) region in remote central Australia. Over a series of workshops co-researchers worked intensively at the interface of knowledge systems creating a unique and safe space for exploring this issue. The process elicited learnings that have the potential to transform practice and was itself a trauma-informed healing opportunity for participants. The project was led by Aboriginal women who wished to share what was done so that others may benefit from working in this way. IMPLICATIONS Participatory action research can be an effective approach to improving service delivery for Aboriginal women who have experienced sexual violence. By working at the cultural and knowledge interface of Aboriginal and Western standpoints, and utilising contextually relevant means of engagement, deeper understandings of sexual violence and healing are the result for participants. Deeper intercultural understandings have the potential to lead to innovations in service delivery.
