The COVID-19 pandemic triggered an outpour of solidarity among residents of neighborhoods around the world. In China, one common form of solidarity was neighborly help provided through gifting/sharing food and daily necessities. Using survey data of 3543 residents in four Chinese cities collected in Spring 2021, we explore the factors associated with providing neighborly help and examine the general situation of neighborhood-based social capital and neighborly relationships. The results from a multiple linear regression analysis show that high levels of neighborly help during the pandemic were associated with positive relationships and trust among neighbors. Income and the use of social media apps among neighbors were the most important factors for residents to provide neighborly help. Our findings indicate that Chinese neighborhoods generally possess a high level of social capital despite the potentially disruptive influence of economic and societal changes in recent decades, which has positively contributed to facilitating neighborly help during the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, social media based on smart technologies also positively affects local communities during the pandemic.

The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on price convergence in the housing market is largely unknown. This paper aims to assess the impact of the pandemic on the convergence of sales and rental housing prices. The residential markets in Polish voivodeship capitals were chosen as a case study. The convergence evaluation was based on a local linear version of the log t regression test, which allowed the estimation of a time-varying convergence speed parameter. The causal effect of the pandemic on convergence was examined using a Bayesian structural time series model. The study results revealed that the pandemic led to divergence in the primary sales housing market, growth convergence in the secondary sales housing market, and a weakening growth convergence in the rental housing market. Finally, this paper provides the R function logt that enables running the local linear and dummy variable log t regression tests.

Abstract In large cities, the decay of deprived neighborhoods externalizes the consequences of present-day urban social inequality. Residents of these areas often show discomfort with living in a poor environment. Adopting Hirschman's classic Exit, Voice and Loyalty model, this study analyzes the reactions of residents to dissatisfaction in San Diego, a deprived neighborhood in Madrid. A qualitative methodology was applied to analyze the discourses of residents by conducting fourteen focus groups with diverse profiles according to gender, age, socio-labor situation, and geographical origin. The results reflect that, in a deprived neighborhood, there are limits to reactions, so that exit (moving out) is only partially manifested, and voice (social mobilization) is only temporarily activated, conditioned by the situation and organizational capacity. Loyalty, on the contrary, appears as an option that improves coexistence, but it remains attached to long-term residents and hardly welcomes newcomers, especially immigrants. The explanatory capacity of Hirschman's model is here expanded by exploring the use of resistance as a complementary response. This strategy, as a political reaction, complements voice and reinforces agency by seeking concrete improvements in the daily life of the residents. These qualitative research results provide important insight into neighbors’ reactions in deprived areas, where exit and voice, as main options, are limited, and resistance becomes a significant potential for them.

Abstract Home renovation is a global phenomenon, where households seek to remodel, reconfigure, and retrofit their home. While often a response to the material conditions of a dwelling, such as decay and damage, renovation also as emerges as a practice central to identity creation, sense of home, and leisure. Importantly, improving household sustainability is increasingly driving renovation activities, as governments and households seek to reduce the environmental impact of residential dwellings. Drawing on data collected from a national survey developed by the authors, this paper explores sustainable renovation practices in Australia. The paper provides a three-level analysis of home renovators. First, the paper profiles recent renovators. Second, the extent to which sustainability was considered by recent renovators during the renovation process is investigated. Third, the relationship between personal values placed on household sustainability and the sustainable renovation practices are explored. The analysis reveals that sustainability is an important renovation driver. However, sustainable renovation practices differ between groups of homeowners, with educated and wealthy homeowners most likely to undertake sustainable renovation. Further, those with a stronger commitment to household sustainability are the most likely to include expensive sustainability technologies as part of their renovations. However, it is younger households, who are less committed to the principles of household sustainability, that are most likely to access government subsidies to support the inclusion of these technologies as part of their renovation. The different profiles and actions of these renovator groups reveal a series of challenges and opportunities for governments seeking to promote household sustainability.
