Purpose Managers play a crucial role in organizations. They make decisions that directly influence organizational success and significantly impact employees’ mental health, development and performance. They are responsible for ensuring the financial well-being and long-term sustainability of organizations. However, their mental health is often overlooked, which can negatively affect employees and organizations. This study aims to address managers’ mental health at work, by examining specifically the direct and indirect effects of identity verification on their psychological distress and depression through self-esteem at work. The study also aims to examine the moderating as well as moderated mediation effects of identity salience. Design/methodology/approach A sample of 314 Canadian managers working in 56 different companies was studied, using multilevel analyses. Findings The findings showed that the verification of managers’ identity vis-à-vis recognition is positively associated with psychological distress and depression. Self-esteem completely mediates the association between low identity verification vis-à-vis work control and psychological distress, and also the association between low identity verification vis-à-vis work control and superior support and depression, while it partially mediates the association between low identity verification vis-à-vis recognition and depression. Practical implications This study can also help both managers and human resource management practitioners in understanding the role of workplaces in the identity verification process and developing relevant interventions to prevent mental health issues among managers at work. Originality/value This study proposed a relatively unexplored approach to the study of managers’ mental health at work. Its integration of identity theory contributes to expanding research on management and workplace mental health issues.

Purpose This study aims to understand the impact of key resources on work engagement while working from home (WFH). Social support is divided into the support provided at home and leadership and organizational support (LOS) provided externally. Thus, the study contends that while WFH employees invest in internal resources, they seek validation, care and assurance from external resources. Previous studies' limitations were addressed by considering LOS as an external resource that strengthens the relationship between internal resources and work engagement. Design/methodology/approach Survey research (n = 244) was undertaken, and the interaction effect between LOS and the other resources like flexibility, work support and the home environment was empirically validated using PROCESS macro. Findings The interaction effects between LOS and the internal resources were positive, which suggests that LOS helps mitigate the stress associated with remote working and results in positive work engagement. Originality/value The study delineates LOS as an external resource that augments the effect of internal resources on work engagement, which impacts work engagement. In research, significantly less effort has been expended on studying the effect of the home domain on work engagement, which was also the focus of this study. Future research can look at other factors that impact work engagement, especially in a remote work setting.

Purpose Drawing on the dynamic capability view, this study aims to examine the relationships between big data analytics capability (BDAC) and sustainable supply chain performance (SSCP) by exploring the mediating effects of knowledge development (KD) in terms of knowledge acquisition, information distribution, shared meaning and achieved memory. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected by questionnaire survey from 300 manufacturing organizations. Structural equation modeling was used to test the research hypotheses. Findings It was found that all the dimensions of KD were positively related to BDAC and SSCP. Although no direct association was established between BDAC and SSCP, the empirical findings indicated that all the dimensions of KD fully mediated the relationship between BDAC and SSCP. This highlights that organizations need to harness KD because developing BDAC alone may not be sufficient. Originality/value No previous research has explored how KD dimensions such as knowledge acquisition, information distribution, shared meaning and achieved memory mediate the relationship between BDAC and SSCP. This paper addresses this gap in the literature and contributes to the existing debate to better understand the conditions in which BDAC affects SSCP. Pointers for future research are also identified.

Purpose This paper aims to gain insight into managers' perspectives on the concept and practice of workers' participation in management (WPM) in Indian organizations. WPM is a critical ingredient in organizational effectiveness. However, the most fundamental aspects of WPM, such as the attitudes, expectations of managers and the factors facilitating or hindering the participation process, are less explored. This paper attempts to answer those questions concerning WPM in the context of Indian organizations. Design/methodology/approach The study uses data from 138 managers of Indian public and private sector organizations. Data were collected through an online survey as well as through semi-structured interviews. The study explores potential benefits, roadblocks and supporters from the managers' perspective. Further, to test the hypothesis, the author used multiple regression analysis. Findings The paper demonstrates managers' perception of workers' participation at the board level as the most beneficial and supportive compared to joint consultation and joint decision-making; however, at the same time, it is the one having the most roadblocks in the present Indian Labour laws. Workers, unions and managers' lack of legislative support and intention fuel the fire. The study also found that implementation of WPM is primarily based on statutory norms, and public sector managers are more willing to take the workers on board than managers of private sector organizations. Practical implications This research is of practical significance as it extracts new visions for policymakers in India already planning to implement four new labor codes, namely, wages, industrial relations, social security and occupational safety, health and working conditions. The data from the study will facilitate the Indian labor ministry to lay down policy decisions concerning WPM. Further, the government can acclimatize this analysis to plug the ambiguities in the present WPM system. Originality/value To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first study to give insights into the manager's perspective regarding the WPM using a scenario-based approach. In addition, this paper offers valuable suggestions for policymakers to restructure and streamline the country's existing and overlapping labor laws.

Purpose This study aims to explain the relationship between employer branding, social media, online reviews and intention to apply for a job vacancy (IAJV), which organizations should ponder upon while designing branding campaigns. Design/methodology/approach The sample belongs to 385 final-year management graduates and postgraduates enrolled in central universities in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. The dual mediation model is tested by regression and PROCESS macro. Findings Out of five employer branding dimensions, three (corporate social responsibility, healthy work atmosphere and training and development) were found to be significant predictors of IAJV. On the other hand, the dimensions of compensation and benefits and work-life balance did not influence candidates’ intention to apply for a job. The findings indicate that social recruiting could act as an effective tool for leveraging an organization’s image as an employer and could communicate unique brand values to the target market. Moreover, review whether positive, negative or neutral attributes could help job seekers affirm and reaffirm employer branding attributes before applying for a job. Originality/value Studies in social media and employer branding areas lag far behind in practice, and the present research attempts to fill this research gap. A further contribution of this research work will be to assess the role of reviews for a meaningful analysis of potential employees’ intentions to apply in an organization.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to extend the extant literature on the relationship between financial risk tolerance (FRT), awareness of Islamic financial principles (AWIF) and positive financial behaviour (FB) on financial satisfaction (FS) of micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) owners by principally investigating the mediating effect of access to Islamic financing (AIF) on these relationships. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative survey method of data collection through a self-administered questionnaire. The sample of 384 MSME owners was selected in which 208 questionnaires were retrieved and analysed using the partial least square structural equation modelling (SEM). Findings The result shows that the relationships between FRT and AIF as well as FB and AIF are not significant. However, the AWIF–AIF relationship was found to be positively significant. Moreover, only the mediating effect of AIF on the AWIF–FS relationship was established. Practical implications The result implies that AIF could strongly influence the FS of MSME owners, and the AWIF–FS relationship is better explained with sufficient AIF. However, AIF could not mediate the relationships between FRT–FS and FB–FS. Therefore, policymakers and MSME owners should emphasize on AWIF and AIF to enhance FS. Originality/value This study pioneers the examination of the mediating influence of AIF on FRT, AWIF, FB and FS of MSME owners in a single framework. Despite the importance of MSME owners on economic sustainability, literature on MSME owners' FS is lacking expressly among developing countries, particularly in Nigeria. This study also revealed new theoretical and practical knowledge by illuminating the mediating effect of AIF on AWIF–FS relationship.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to provide a literature review of the past literature on the use of blockchain for attaining sustainability in start-ups, covering major characteristics of current findings, limitations and prospective study possibilities. Design/methodology/approach Papers that included the term “Blockchain,” “Sustainability” and “Start-ups” were considered for the analysis. Biblioshiny package under the R programming tool was considered for a detailed paper analysis. Findings Numerous sectors are quickly adopting blockchain technology, which has enormous potential to remove middlemen and boost sustainability in start-ups. Research limitations/implications This research is limited to 147 papers from the Scopus database through 2022. Practical implications This paper stresses the crucial part that blockchain technology has played in igniting a conversation about innovation and technology. This research will aid in advancing the researcher’s knowledge of blockchain technology in start-ups. Social implications Blockchain technology will give transparency and sustainable product or services to consumers of the start-ups. Originality/value The novelty of this research is based on its presentation of an organized and thorough literature evaluation, which defines the current state of the art concerning the use of blockchain for sustainability in start-ups. To create a sustainable start-up, a thorough study of how the information gained in respect of its implementation might be spread into the start-ups is presented.

Purpose By integrating uses and gratification theory (UGT) and online buying behavior theory (OBBT), this study aims to examine the impact of escapism motives (self-suppression and self-expansion) and attitude toward online shopping (ATS) on eCart abandonment. In addition, the mediating role of ATS between escapism motives and eCart abandonment is examined. Design/methodology/approach Structural equations modeling was performed on the data of 400 consumers using AMOS 26. Findings The results indicated that escapism motivations impacted users’ eCart abandonment, and the attitude toward online shopping mediated this relationship. Practical implications The findings of this study imply that online sellers should understand the consumer motives for website use. In response, better strategies should be developed to reduce eCart abandonment. Originality/value This study extends knowledge of eCart abandonment by theoretical integration of UGT and OBBT and identification of the intrinsic predictors of virtual cart abandonment behavior. In addition, it is one of the early attempts to examine the dimensional impact of escapism on eCart abandonment.

Purpose The study aims to inspect the impact of employees’ perception of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and their spiritual values on their affective commitment and job satisfaction, which in turn may promote organizational citizenship behavior. Furthermore, this study examines the moderating effect of Islamic work ethics to identify whether they strengthen or weaken the proposed associations. Design/methodology/approach A survey instrument was devised to collect data from employees. The statistical analysis of the data was conducted using the Smart PLS software. Additionally, the research uses the “Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM)” technique. Findings The findings of the study suggest that employees’ perception of CSR exhibits a positive association with affective commitment and job satisfaction. Likewise, employees’ spiritual values demonstrate a positive and significant correlation with affective commitment and job satisfaction. Finally, the outcomes reveal that affective commitment and job satisfaction play a major role in fostering organizational citizenship behavior. Moreover, Islamic work ethics positively and significantly moderate the relationship between employee CSR perception and affective commitment and between employee CSR perception and job satisfaction. Originality/value This research study endeavors to fill the gaps in the current literature by investigating two crucial aspects of employees: their perception of CSR and spiritual values. Additionally, the study includes Islamic work ethics as a moderator to provide a more comprehensive understanding of how these factors contribute to fostering organizational citizenship behavior. This work highlights the significance of spiritual values and social responsibilities in employees’ lives and how Islamic work ethics shape their behavior accordingly.

Purpose Based on the social penetration theory and affect theory of social exchange, this study aims to examine the relationship between authentic leadership (AL) and workplace loneliness (WL), as well as the mediating effect of interactional justice (IJ) on this relationship during the COVID-19 pandemic in the US higher education sector. Design/methodology/approach An online, self-administrated questionnaire was distributed to full-time employees working at higher education institutions in the USA. A total of 464 employees participated in the survey, with structural equation modeling being used to analyze the data. Findings The outcomes provide evidence that AL is positively related to IJ, whereas the latter is negatively associated with WL. Moreover, IJ fully mediates the relationship between AL and WL. Overall, the findings underline the importance of IJ in affecting employee WL. Practical implications The outcomes provide valuable insights for higher education leaders and HR professionals in reducing employee WL. In particular to this end, it is recommended that organizations focus on improving employee IJ and AL perceptions. Furthermore, higher education organizations need to select and promote leaders who exhibit IJ behaviors and AL characteristics. In addition, organizations could offer IJ and AL training to their current leaders. Originality/value This study contributes to the limited literature on WL by offering a unique research model that examines IJ as a mediating variable between AL and WL. In addition, it adds to the literature by investigating WL in the context of US higher education sector, which is an understudied area in this research context.
