On February 24, 2022, Russia attacked its neighboring country of Ukraine. From the early days of what Russian President Putin called a special military operation, fears mounted that the conflict may grow into World War III, effectively ending the world in nuclear Armageddon. This study compares the current views of American and Russian youths on the issues of global nuclear war and nuclear weapons, as well as explores their inclinations toward supporting a first nuclear strike, nuclear retaliation, and their willingness to make personal sacrifices in the event of a nuclear conflict. Drawing upon the theoretical framework of co-orientation theory, the study methodically assesses the levels of agreement, congruency, and accuracy for the populations of both countries on the issues related to the nuclear conflict. The results show that American and Russian youths are currently in a state of imbalanced co-orientation—a newly defined state in the co-orientation theory—when it comes to their opinions on nuclear war and nuclear weapons. In conclusion, the study underscores the urgent need to address this lack of alignment between the two countries, given the potentially catastrophic consequences of nuclear warfare. Therefore, the study draws upon the co-orientation theory’s insights and formulates strategic public diplomacy recommendations, designed to cultivate mutual understanding, and promote constructive dialogue between the people of the United States of America and the Russian Federation.

This study aims to disentangle how exactly immersive journalism (IJ) relates to a spectrum of democratically relevant engaging outcomes. To do so, I consider a potentially engaging dimension of IJ: interactivity and a resulting “sense of agency.” In a pre-registered laboratory experiment ( N = 150), I test the effect of exposure to IJ productions that vary in their range of interactivity on a spectrum of participatory intentions and behaviors. Results indicate that a medium level—but not a high level—of interactivity in IJ enhances participation in, but not participation through, journalism. In addition, presence, rather than agency, facilitates participative intentions.

Using ads from four Super Bowl broadcasts (2019–2022), we examined the impacts of the 2020 Black Lives Matter (BLM) resurgence on the ad representations of diverse racial groups and the evaluations of ads featuring Black models. Findings show increases in quantitative representations (number and duration) for Black ad models, but this improvement was not linked to qualitative representations (portrayal, prominent role, and hierarchy status). Findings also show the limited influence of the 2020 BLM resurgence on evaluations of advertisements featuring Black models. We also examined how the impact of the 2020 BLM resurgence on advertising shifted from 2021 to 2022.

This study tests the Reinforcing Spirals Model (RSM) using a Swedish three-wave panel study ( N = 1,376) during the COVID-19 pandemic. It contributes to the literature by studying whether ideological news use affects citizens’ perceptions about how Sweden managed the pandemic. The results exhibit how perceptions are dependent on ideological predisposition, which is mediated by news use, and how right-wing ideology initiates a reinforcing spiral between selective news use and perceptions. Ideological as well as news use asymmetries are displayed here: Alternative news reinforces negative perceptions, whereas traditional news has no effect. The findings are discussed in light of the RSM.
