In this article, the author examines the main features of the perception of historical time in the Arab, Iranian and Indonesian Muslim intellectual traditions in a comparative perspective. The purpose of the article is to analyze the images of “historical time” and its derivatives in the modern liberal segment of the Ummah. Therefore, the author analyzes 1) the peculiarities of the perception of historical time by liberal Muslim intellectuals, 2) the directions of assimilation of Western humanities methods, 3) the prospects for transforming the perception of historical time in the modern humanitarian situation through the prism of rising interdisciplinarity. Methodologically, the article is based on the principles proposed in interdisciplinary historiography, proposed in intellectual history and new cultural history through the prism of imaginative and interventionist turns. The novelty of the study lies in the analysis of common and unique features of the perception of historical time and its derivatives by modern Muslim liberal intellectuals. The results of the study suggest that 1) Islam has become an important factor in the perception of “historical time”, 2) the categories of “event history” and “historical progress” are reduced to the history of the progressive development and spread of Islam, 3) the transplantation of Western interdisciplinary epistemology has become an important factor in the invention of historical time.

The article analyzes the unfi nished and unpublished work “Travel Sketches. ‘Tourist’s Notes’” by Shakhimardan M. Ibragimov kept at the Archives of the Orientalists of the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts, RAS (St. Petersburg, Russia). The text refl ects the results of Ibragimov’s trip to the Russian Turkestan during the performance of his offi cial duties and his observations on the daily life of the local population. Being a Turk and a Muslim, Ibragimov paid much attention to the objects of Muslim historical heritage in Turkestan, the state of Islamic institutions (mosques, madrasahs, rabats) and the status of representatives of the clergy (khojas, faqihs), etc. At the same time, he sometimes critically examined the information he received about the local antiquities and even questioned the Muslim origin of some historical monuments and folk customs. According to the authors, this position of Ibragimov can be explained by the fact that he was not only a Muslim, but also an offi cial in the service of the Russian Empire. Perhaps he also took into account the preferences of potential readers of his “Notes”. At the same time, there is no reason to believe that Ibragimov was skeptical about Islam — on the contrary, his interest in historical monuments and religious sites, as well as a number of circumstances of his life and career indicate the opposite. The analyzed “Notes” are of considerable interest as a source on the history, ethnography and religious life of Turkestan. They also refl ect the level of development of Russian Oriental studies in Turkestan in the second half of the 19th century, combining elements of a travelogue and a research.

Most of the information about these objects is stored in various archives of Russia and is not known to researchers. Archival documents cited in the article, previously unpublished, are being thoroughly introduced into scientific circulation for the fi rst time.

The paper deals with two aspects of continuity of religious and philosophical views of the Tatar thinkers Sh. Marjani and M. Bigi. The fi rst is about the universality of divine grace. Marjani, in his “Book on Mature Wisdom that Helps to Explain the Hanafi Creed», gave arguments according to which the decision on this issue remains with the Almighty. Bigi in the “Proofs of Divine Mercy” asserted the inevitability of salvation for all the peoples of the world. The second aspect is about ‘aqida, kalam and ij - tihad. Despite the more than fi fty-year diff erence in the time of the publication of their views by two Tatar thinkers, they are basically identical: for the progress of the Tatar nation, Islam requires the “purifi cation” of ‘aqida from Kalam layers, in Muslim education — the replacement of Kalam with secular sciences and the adoption of ij tihad based on primary sources — the Qur’an, Sunnah and ij ma‘.

This paper provides a brief explanation of the block chain and the concept of “crypto currency”, followed by an analysis of Bitcoin for permissibility from the point of view of Shari‘ah. The decisions of well-known houses of fatwas were considered, and a number of criteria were developed and adopted with the help of which the Shari‘ah position of a particular crypto currency can be assessed. The article identifi es provisions and decisions that can become the basis for issuing fatwas related to issues that concern many Muslims who care about the permissibility of their earnings.

The article considers innovations in Muslim education in Russia proposed by orientalists Sh. Marjani and H. Faizhan in the mid-19th century. There was formed a new type of madrasa, including introduction of new languages into curriculum and some other changes. The author describes some traits of integration of the Islamic educational system into the Russian one. The article substantiates the need to solve managerial issues in the development of the present-day system of theological education. In order to fulfi l this task, the analysis of historical administrative documents was carried out, the progress of implementation of changes was considered, prospects for further development were identifi ed, the role of the Federal State Educational Standard in the development of Islamic theological education was emphasized.

The article examines the role and place, the peculiarities of functioning of one of the most specifi c groups of the Soviet society of the clergy. A brief digression is given concerning the policy of the Soviet government in relation to the Muslim clergy of the subregion. It is emphasized that this group in the fi rst Soviet decades went through a diffi cult path from a strategic partner of the young Soviet government, which made a signifi cant contribution to its victory in the subregion under consideration, to a principled opponent subjected to repression. It is noted that during the Great Patriotic War, despite the fundamental changes in the sphere of state- confessional relations, there was a break in the continuity of generations of ministers of worship in the republic, as a result of which a personnel vacuum was formed. It is associated with the specifi cs of the religious policy of the occupation authorities. The sources of recruitment of the Muslim clergy of the period of the 40–80s of the 20th century, their origin, educational level, role and place in the society of the subregion are analyzed. The statements and conclusions put forward are supported by archival documents. In conclusion, it is concluded that, despite the low level of preparedness and narrowed functionality, the Muslim clergy of Kabardino- Balkaria of the historical period under consideration fulfi lled the role of the guardian of religious knowledge and traditions. Thus, it played an important role in maintaining household religiosity, the level of which in these years continued to remain quite high.

This article deals with Khusain Faizkhanov (1823–1866) as an Islamic theologian. This aspect of his thought was rarely studied in numerous publications about his work — his orientalist or pedagogical heritage invariably came to the fore, in isolation from its religious roots. This is not accidental, since the thinker did not leave behind explicit theological works. Nevertheless, the complexity of the problem does not relieve us of the need to solve it. As will be shown below, without understanding the theological dimension of Faizkhanov’s thought, essential aspects of his educational activities are also missed. The thinker proposed a kind of theological legitimation of secular knowledge, which was important for him both on a personal level and in the context of social pragmatics. The social consequence of this legitimization, refl ected primarily in the project of reform of religious education, was to be the formation of an educated Muslim elite of the modern type.

Changes in political sentiment among the inhabitants of the former South Yemen, an increase in calls for independence, and rethinking of the Southern identity are accompanied by a rise in nostalgia for the past among the inhabitants of the former South Yemen. Based on the materials collected by the methods of digital ethnography, the article analyzes the role of nostalgic processes in the construction of local identities among Adeni social media users. Nostalgic moods are mainly focused on the time of the British presence (1839–1967) and the existence of the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen (1967–1990). Through a nostalgic prism, these historical periods are often perceived by the Adenis in the same way and merge into one image of the lost «Belle Epoque», while the socio- political contradictions and economic diffi culties that existed back then are being forgotten. The image of the unattainable past becomes a space for the construction of the Southern identity in the present with the Adenis comparing their current reality with bygone times, uniqualizing their historical experience and opposing themselves to the inhabitants of North Yemen.

Based on the materials collected by the methods of digital ethnography, the article analyzes the role of nostalgic processes in the construction of local identities among Adeni social media users. Nostalgic moods are mainly focused on the time of the British presence (1839–1967) and the existence of the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen (1967–1990). Through a nostalgic prism, these historical periods are often perceived by the Adenis in the same way and merge into one image of the lost «Belle Epoque», while the socio- political contradictions and economic diffi culties that existed back then are being forgotten. This article continues a series of publications of the commented translation into Russian of the interpretation to the Surah “al-Fatiha” (No. 1) by the founder of classical Muslim exegesis Muḥammad ibn Jarīr aṭ-Ṭabari (839–923) from the book “Jāmi‘ al-bayān fī ta’wīl al- Qur’ān” (The Comprehensive Exposition of the interpretation of the Qur’ān). This part contains sections devoted to ayats 4–5 of this surah. Based on examples of pre-Islamic and Early Islamic poetry and traditions of the “ancient fathers” of the Ummah, the etymology and interpretation of the words used in them: ‘ubūdiyyā “worship”, hidāya “guidance” and ṣirāṭ “path” are given. In this part, the theologian also examines the variants of worlds order in the syntactic construction of the 4th verse and justifi es the grammatical necessity of repeating the iya-ka in it. A special place is devoted to the theological polemic with the Qadarites on the issue of the essence of Divine attributes and determinism.
