First checklist of the oribatid mites (Arachnida: Oribatida) of the Gran Chaco region (South America) with new records 南美洲大查科地区甲螨(蛛形纲:甲螨目)首次新记录清单

The South American Gran Chaco ecoregion extends through great areas of Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, and Brazil. The region includes vast forests that serve as an important reservoir of tropical and subtropical diversity. In spite of its extent and high biodiversity, it remains an unexplored area regarding Oribatida. We made bibliographic research about the oribatid mites previously registered. In the bibliography of Argentina and Paraguay, a total of 53 species are cited for this region. From our own works in the Argentinean provinces of Santiago del Estero and Chaco, we add some new records of Oribatida in the area. We provide a list of the species registered to date, including 48 firstly recorded in this work, as well as new localities for other 11 species previously known for the area. This paper almost doubles the number of registered species for this highly diverse but poorly known ecoregion, adding information towards the true diversity of Oribatida in the Chaco region.

Side-effects of a number of insecticides on predatory mites in apple orchards 多种杀虫剂对苹果园捕食性螨的副作用

Background: Amblyseius andersoni is a common predatory mite occurring in fruit orchards located in Europe and North America. Its role in preventing spider mite outbreaks is widely recognized, in particular when selective pesticides are used. The compatibility between plant protection products and predatory mites is crucial to preserve their activity. There is a need to investigate the effects of pesticides on beneficials using multiple approaches. Objectives: Field and laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of a number of insecticides on A. andersoni. Methods: The effects of neonicotinoids (i.e., acetamiprid, imidacloprid, thiacloprid, thia-methoxam) were compared with those of pyrethroids (i.e., tau-fluvalinate), well known for their negative impact on predatory mites. Insecticides were applied 1-3 times in an experimental fruit orchard located in Northern Italy. Laboratory trials focused on their effects on the survival and the fecundity of predatory mite females. Results: Field experiments showed a decline in predatory mite numbers in plots treated with neonicotinoids or tau-fluvalinate compared to the untreated control. However, predatory mites in neonicotinoid plots reached higher densities compared to those recorded in tau-fluvalinate plots. Spider mite (Panonychus ulmi) populations reached moderate to high densities in plots treated with tau-fluvalinate while their densities were negligible in the remaining plots. Amblyseius andersoni survival was moderately affected by some neonicotinoids in the laboratory while they significantly reduced predatory mite fecundity. In contrast tau-fluvalinate exerted severe effects on survival and fecundity of predatory mites. Finally, escaping rate increased after pesticide exposure suggesting possible alterations in predatory mite behavior. Conclusions: Neonicotinoid applications significantly affected predatory mite densities in field conditions and this phenomenon appeared to be influenced by their impact on female fecundity. Their effects on survival were less severe. Implications of these results for IPM tactics in fruit orchards are discussed.

The five described species of the flightless, allopatric geotrupid beetle genus Mycotrupes are restricted to deep sand ridges in peninsular Florida and to adjacent, elevated sand hill habitats along the juncture of the Piedmont and the Atlantic Coastal Plain in southern South Carolina and Georgia, USA. Based on examination of major museum collections of all five described Mycotrupes species, it was concluded that Geotrupacarus mycotrupetes, a distinctive, early derivative macrochelid mite phoretic on Mycotrupes gaigei, does not occur on any of the other four described species of Mycotrupes, nor have other species of Geotrupacarus been found on any of these beetles, all of which (like Myco. gaigei) are isolated and allopatric in their own sand ridge or sand hill habitats. It also was determined that Geotrupes egeriei Germar, a winged, widely distributed geotrupid beetle that co-occurs with Myco. gaigei in Florida and which is strongly attractive to G. mycotrupetes in laboratory settings, has not expanded the range of G. mycotrupetes beyond peninsular Florida.

Is Eriophyes mali Nalepa present in Italy? 马里纳勒帕在意大利存在吗?

In the last few years, blistering symptoms were observed on apple plants in commercial orchards. Blisters are commonly found on apple leaves as well as on small fruits. This symptom is compatible with that described for apple blister mites belonging to the genus Eriophyes (Eriophyidae). To assess the identity of the etiological agent, leaf blisters and buds of symptomatic apple and, as a control, pear plants were examined under the dissection microscope and eriophyoid mites were collected. Specimens were examined using both molecular and morphological approaches. The analysis of sequences confirmed that eriophyoid mites collected from symptomatic apple and pear plants are genetically different. Our analyses highlight a complex scenario inside the genus Eriophyes that is worth to be studied in more detail.

Variation in the trophic morphology of Astigmatid mites common in UK beehives 英国蜂箱常见散光螨营养形态的变化

The chelal moveable digit in Carpoglyphus lactis (Linnaeus), Glycyphagus domesticus (DeGeer), and Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank) from UK beehives is described using quantitative measures within a 2D mechanical model. The location of maximum jerk on the profile of the chelal moveable digit indicates the end of the mastication surface, which in these mites is confirmed to be just before the theoretical cut-off point for a functioning chewing `machine`. All three species should be able to grasp yeasts, spores and mycelial hyphae in the hive. The moveable digit of C. lactis may be designed to enable pollenophagy. The mastication surface is 21.3 μm in C. lactis, 18.8 μm in G. domesticus, and 17.2 μm in T. putrescentiae. The wild-collected C. lactis shows the smallest chelal moveable digit tip velocity ratios (i.e., the lowest relative length of input to output moment arms). Glycyphagus domesticus has the most primitive geometry of its chela. The depth of the moveable digit matches the inferred resistive forces applied by the mite to food at that point. Condylar and moveable digit strengthening by sclerotisation is associated with eating tougher food. Effective chelal gape is 28.7 μm in C. lactis, 25.9 μm in G. domesticus and 24.8 μm in T. putrescentiae. Maximum food fragment size grabbed by the chela is estimated as 7786 μm3 in C. lactis, 5348 μm3 in G. domesticus and 4703 μm3 in T. putrescentiae. Morsel size pre-ingestion is estimated as 4031 μm3 in C. lactis, 5228 μm3 in G. domesticus and 4246 μm3 in T. putrescentiae. Under reasonable assumptions one of these mites might be able to excavate its own body volume equivalent in about one hour.

Maximum food fragment size grabbed by the chela is estimated as 7786 μm3 in C. lactis, 5348 μm3 in G. domesticus and 4703 μm3 in T. putrescentiae. Morsel size pre-ingestion is estimated as 4031 μm3 in C. lactis, 5228 μm3 in G. domesticus and 4246 μm3 in T. putrescentiae. A morphometric and molecular characterization of Brevipalpus sp. close to the group of cryptic species within Brevipalpus californicus s.l. bearing only one solenidion on tarsus II was conducted, and its capacity to acquire and inoculate citrus leprosis virus C (CiLV-C) and orchid fleck virus, strain-citrus (OFV-citrus), was determined. For the morphometric study, photomicrographs of mites from two colonies kept in the laboratory were taken: one derived from a single female of the aberrant Brevipalpus that was collected on citrus in Tetipac, Guerrero State, Mexico and provisionally designated as Brevipalpus sp. (Tetipac); another derived from a single female collected in Texcoco, Mexico State [hereafter, B. californicus (Texcoco)]. The observed characteristics were compared with slide-mounted specimens of B. lewisi McGregor and B. californicus Baker from their respective type series. From specimens of each species, 37 morphometric characters were evaluated and compared using univariate and multivariate analysis (principal components and clusters). In the molecular characterization, specimens of Brevipalpus sp. (Tetipac) and B. californicus (Texcoco) were used. Phylogenetic analyses were conducted based on two segments of the COI and one of the 28S genes. Acquisition and inoculation tests of CiLV-C and OFV-citrus were carried out using larvae, nymphs, and adult females of Brevipalpus sp. (Tetipac), on the indicator plants Phaseolus vulgaris L. (Fabaceae), Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. (Brassicaceae), and sweet orange [Citrus x sinensis (L.) Osbeck. ‘Valencia’; Rutaceae]. In this last host, B. californicus (Texcoco) and B. yothersi were added as controls. To detect these viruses, specific primers for each of them were used. Univariate analyses showed that only 17 morphological characters were significantly different among mite species. The multivariate analysis showed that Brevipalpus sp. (Tetipac) and B. californicus (Texcoco) are not separate entities; therefore, both were determined as B. californicus s.l. The molecular characterization showed similar results. In the acquisition tests, only two of the 90 replicates were positive for CiLV-C, whereas 84 of the 90 replicates were positive for OFV-citrus. In the inoculation tests, symptoms did not appear in the indicator plants A. thaliana and P. vulgaris after being infested with Brevipalpus sp. (Tetipac) carrying the OFV-citrus. Small nuclear-leprosis-like lesions were only observed on C. sinensis after infestation by viruliferous Brevipalpus sp. (Tetipac). However, RT-PCR did not confirm the presence of OFV-citrus in these plants. In contrast, control plants infested with viruliferous B. californicus (Texcoco) developed leprosis symptoms and the presence of OFV-citrus was confirmed by RT-PCR.

(Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) found in flowers of passionfruit (Passiflora edulis Sims, Passifloraceae). Conotelus species have been reported in Brazil to cause significant damage to passionfruit.

Interpretations of the genus Lorryia Oudemans, 1925 are reviewed together with their respective criteria. After consideration of Oudemans' detailed description and previously unavailable plates, the unique type specimen (lost ?) is not considered abnormal but rather reveals evolutionary pathways (heterobidactyly, reduction of the palp chaetotaxy) consistent with other Tydeoidea. After discussion, the genus is re-established in its pristine state and remains monospecific (L. superba). The genus Brachytydeus Thor, 1931 (ca 200 species) is quite distinct from Lorryia and does not deserve any synonymisation.

The two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae), is one of the economically most important pests on different crops worldwide. Its management programs are normally conducted based on the usage of chemical acaricides. However, considering the side effects of acaricides and rapid resistance development, releasing the predator mite, Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot (Acari: Phytoseiidae), is an alternative method for the control of T. urticae. In this study, the effects of plant probiotic bacteria; Bacillus pumilus INR7 (Bacillales: Bacillaceae) and Bacillus velezensis Fol (Bacillales: Bacillaceae), and herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) (methyl jasmonate, methyl salicylate, Indole and 3-pentanol) were investigated on the functional response of P. persimilis to T. urticae eggs laid on attached leaves of kidney bean under laboratory conditions (25 ± 1 °C, 65 ± 5% RH and a photoperiod of 16:8h L:D). Densities of 2, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 prey in 10 replications were offered to the 1-day-old adult female individuals of P. persimilis during a 24-h period. The results of logistic regression analyses showed a type II functional response on all treatments. The Rogers model was used to estimate the instantaneous attack rate (a) and handling time (Th). The instantaneous attack rate had no significant difference among treatments. The handling time on B. velezensis (0.3540 ± 0.0716 h) and methyl salicylate (0.3593 ± 0.0842 h) was significantly lower than in other treatments. These results suggest that methyl salicylate and B. velezensis may have a positive effect on the foraging behavior of P. persimilis against T. urticae.
