Purpose/aim: Although Five Times-Sit-To-Stand test (FTSST) performance is known to be a valid and reliable method in people with chronic stroke, Parkinson's disease, and balance disorder, it has not been widely studied in patients with Multiple sclerosis (MS). The main aim of this study was to evaluate validity and reliability of the FTSST in patients with MS.

Methods: The first outcome measure of the study was the FTSST, which was conducted by two different researchers. Secondary outcome measures were Biodex Stability System (BSS), 10-meter walk test, time up go test (TUG), EDSS scoring, Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), Barthel Index, Quadriceps Muscle strength test, Functional Reach test. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used for the validity and reliability of the FTSST, which was made by two different researchers, and Pearson Correlation Analysis was used to determine its relationship with other measurements.

Results: Interrater and test-retest reliability for the FTSST were excellent (Intraclass correlation coefficients of 0.98 and 0.99, respectively). A statistically significant correlation was found between all secondary outcome measures and FTSST (p < 0.05).

Conclusion: FTSST is considered to be a valid, reliable, easy, and rapid method for evaluating lower extremity muscle strength and balance in patients with MS.

Objective: To investigate the effects of using fixed orthodontic appliance on dynamic balance, auditory/visual reaction times, as well as pain perception in adolescent and young adult elite athletes.

Methods: A total of 34 elite athletes (n = 19 males) aged 16-21 years from different sports (track and field sprint, long jump and discus throw) were randomly allocated to treatment (n = 17) or control (n = 17) groups. The treatment group received self-ligating brackets with 0.04 cm super-elastic nickel-titanium arch wire, placed in the brackets to correct the teeth position. Perceived pain (i.e., visual analogue scale), dynamic balance (i.e., Y balance test), and auditory reaction time and visual reaction time using Direct RT software were assessed before (day-1), and on five occasions after fixed orthodontic appliance placement (day+1, +3, +7, +14, and +30). The two groups' quantitative data [expressed as mean (standard deviation)] for each occasion were compared using the Student's t-test. Comparisons of the Y-balance test, auditory reaction time, visual reaction time, and pain visual analogue scale data were each made between the 6 occasions via a factorial A × B analysis of variance in order to check for the possible interaction between the two groups and the (6) consecutive days (occasions).

Results: Compared to the control group, the treatment group showed significantly (i) lower values of anterior reach for both the dominant ([78(4) vs. 75(3)%, respectively]) and the non-dominant [76(3) vs. 74(4)%, respectively] legs at day+3, and (ii) higher values of pain visual analogue scale at day+1, day+3, and day+7 [0.00(0.00) vs. 4.94(1.25); 0.00(0.00) vs. 4.12(1.17), and 0.00(0.00) vs. 0.41(0.51), respectively). Factorial analysis of variance revealed that only pain visual analogue scale values were different between the two groups at day+1 and day+3.

Conclusion: FOA induced a high pain level during the first week following its placement in elite athletes.

Purpose: Patellofemoral pain (PFP) is characterized by pain around the patella during functional actıvıty. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the new method of applying the patellar Kinesio taping (KT).

Materials and methods: Participants with PFP were randomly assigned to a Kinesio star taping (n = 14), placebo taping (n = 12), or control group (n = 13). Knee pain intensity during activity, resting, at night-time and during buckling were measured using the visual analogue scale under both KT, placebo taping, and home exercising before and after six weeks. Oedema, performance, knee function, and muscle strength were assessed with circumferential measurement, the Kujala questionnaire, vertical jumps, a 10-step down test, squat test, triple jump test, respectively, in all groups before and after taping.

Results: Decreases were detected in pain in each group (p < 0.05) but there were no differences in pain during activity, and buckling in the three groups before and after taping (p > 0.05). Performances and knee functions showed similar results in all groups before and after taping (p > 0.05). The outcomes of all tapings showed that there were no differences between the groups in terms of oedema (p > 0.05), the knee functions (p > 0.05), and muscles strength on the affected and unaffected sides, there were no significant differences between inter and intra groups (p > 0.05).

Conclusions: A 6-week new technique star taping together with home-based exercises have similar effects with placebo taping and home exercise groups on oedema, pain, performance, function in PFP. The effects of star taping technique may be determined in future studies as long- and short-term in different types of injuries.

Purpose/aim: Anterior cruciate ligament injuries are the most common traumatic ligament injuries of the knee, which course with impaired balance. The aim of the present study was to analyse the effect of kinesiology tape on balance in subjects with non-operated anterior cruciate ligament rupture.

Materials and methods: 36 subjects were randomly assigned to the kinesiology tape group (KT = 20) and the non-standardized tape group (NST = 16). Balance was assessed in the following 3 conditions: no bandage, immediately after application, and after four days of use. The outcome measures used were the Sensory Organisation Test (SOT), assessed by computerised dynamic Posturography (CDP), the modified star excursion balance test (mSEBT), the Spanish version of the KOOS and the Lysholm Knee Score. A 2-way repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed, with time as a within-subject factor and group as a between-subjects factor. Bonferroni correction was applied when the ANOVA was significant.

Results: ANOVA showed that there was no significant interaction between group and time for all outcome measures. However, a significant effect on the time factor was observed for: composite SOT score in both groups immediately after tape application; composite SOT after four days of use in the KT group; mSEBT in the KT group immediately after tape application. The KOOS improved in both groups after four days of tape use, while the Lysholm Knee Score improved only in the NST group.

Conclusions: No differences were observed between the KT or NST groups in balance measurements.

Aim: This study aimed to compare the effects of two different home-based exercise delivery methods on compliance, pain, and disability in participants with non-specific neck pain.

Materials & methods: The study, which was carried out at Istanbul Arel University between February and May 2018, was carried out with 60 participants from university staff, aged 25-60, suffering from non-specific neck pain. The cases were randomly assigned to two groups. A home exercise method with printed material exercise was given to the patients in Group 1, and a video phone reminder exercise was given to Group 2 for six weeks in both groups. Pain severity and neck disability were evaluated before and after the exercise with the 'Visual Analogue Scale' and the 'Neck Pain and Disability Score.'

Results: Descriptive statistics showed that the video phone reminder exercise group had greater compliance. Neck pain and neck disability assessments improved before and after the exercise in both groups (p < .001). Statistical analysis revealed that video phone reminder exercise scores were significantly higher than those of the control group. Effect sizes were evaluated between the two groups, and the difference between them were found to be clinically significant (d > 0.8).

Conclusions: The home exercise method with video and telephone reminders, which can be applied instead of the traditional method provided with printed materials, is more effective for compliance, pain severity, and neck disability. Trial registration: NCT04135144. Registered on 21 September 2019. Retrospectively.

Objectives: To investigate the effects of adding interactive videogames to conventional rehabilitation programmes on radiological progression and upper extremity functional status.

Patients and methods: A total of 18 patients with hemiplegic stroke were randomized into two groups as conventional rehabilitation (control) group (n = 9), and the conventional rehabilitation + interactive videogames (intervention) group (n = 9). Each group received a 4-week program (5 days/week). Radiological progression (diffuse tensor imaging), and upper extremity functional status (upper extremity motor functioning part of the Fugl Meyer Assessment, self-care part of the Functional Independence Measure (FIM), and Motor Activity Log) were assessed at baseline and 4-week later.

Results: While no changes were detected in radiological status in the intervention group (p > 0.05), some regions on the affected side were improved significantly in the control group (p < 0.05). Total upper extremity motor functioning part of the Fugl Meyer Assessment scores and the self-care part of the FIM scores significantly improved in both groups (p < 0.05). No differences were detected in the amount of changes between groups (p > 0.05).

Conclusion: According to our results, adding videogames to a conventional rehabilitation program does not seem enhancing the radiological progression or the functional status of the upper extremities.

Individuals with Moderate Intellectual Disability (MID) have lower levels of physical activity than typically developing peers. Considering the positive effects of physical activity on health, it is vital to identify effective exercise interventions for individuals with MID in everyday environments. The aim of our study was to examine the effects of theraband exercises on muscle strength and motor development of individuals with MID. A total of 16 individuals with MID were included in the study. Participants were divided into experimental and control group by random sampling method. Theraband exercise training was applied on the experimental group (60 min/2 days/10 weeks), but no exercise program was applied on the control group. When post-test results were evaluated between the groups, there was significant difference in favour of experimental group in terms of muscle strength and Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency- Second Version-Short Form (BOT-2-SF) total motor performance parameters (p < 0.05). The difference between pre-test and post-test values of total motor performance parameters of muscle strength and BOT-2 SF in experimental group were significant (p < 0.05). As a result, it was found that 10-week (60 min/2 days/10 weeks) theraband exercise positively affected the muscle strength and motor development of individuals with MID.

Background and purpose: Understanding the issues of the elderly or providing opportunities for a more fruitful ageing are some of the challenges that the officials and researchers in the area grapple with. The current study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a series of brain gym exercises on elderly males' eye-hand coordination.

Material and methods: Thirty old males (60-80 years old) were selected using the convenience sampling technique and were divided equally into an experimental and a control group. After performing baseline measurements, the experimental group performed the brain gym exercises for 16 sessions; the sessions were held twice in week, and each session lasted for 30 min. The touch test disc was applied to assess the participants' eye-hand coordination.

Results: The results of mixed-ANOVA indicated a significant difference between the experimental and control groups (p < 0.05) and in favour of experimental group.

Conclusion: The results were quite promising and have practical implications for the exercise and routine programs of rehabilitation centres and nursing homes. However, the limited research studies conducted in the area make use recommend conducting more studies using larger samples of both genders and exploiting other tasks of eye-hand coordination.

Purpose/aim of the study: The purpose of this study was to analyse the relationship between digital media use and expressive language skills in the semantic and morphosyntactic domains, of pre-school-aged children (3 years-and-0 months to 5 years-and-11 months).

Materials and methods: Verbal oral expression (VOE) tasks of the Pre-school Assessment of Language Test (Teste de Linguagem-Avaliação da Linguagem Pré-Escolar) were administered to 237 pre-school children with no previous identified neurological or developmental conditions associated with language disorders to assess expressive language skills in the semantic and morphosyntactic domains. Parents completed a questionnaire about their children's medical conditions, development (using the milestones of the Survey of Well-being of Young Children and the Pre-school Paediatric Symptom Checklist), and exposure to screens (using ScreenQ). Correlations between VOE and continuous variables such as ScreenQ were computed and a regression model incorporating all variables significantly associated with total language verbal expression was created.

Results: ScreenQ revealed a negative and significant correlation with children's verbal oral expression as well as significance in the regression model. Parents' education was the most significant predictor in this regression model.

Conclusions: This study emphasizes the importance of parents establishing limits for digital media use and promote good practices such as co-viewing.
