Purpose/aim: This study aimed to investigate the predictors of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in desk-bound engineers.

Materials and methods: The Fonseca Anamnestic Index (FAI), The Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), The Neck Pain and Disability Scale (NPDS), Neck Bournemouth Questionnaire (NBQ) and The Fremantle Neck Awareness Questionnaire-Turkish (FreNAQ-T) were used for TMD severity, pain, disability, neck awareness.

Results: The study was conducted with 208 desk-bound engineers. Mild-to-severe TMD was detected in 78.9% of the subjects. Intensity of pain at rest and during activity was higher in female engineers compared to male engineers (p = 0.002 and <0.01, respectively) and mean FAI, NBQ, NPDS and FreNAQ-T scores were also higher than that of male engineers (p = 0.005, 0.005, 0.006 and 0.016, respectively). FAI, VAS, NPDS, NBQ and FreNAQ-T were found to be correlated with each other (p < 0.05). A statistically significant contribution to the regression model was observed for the variables gender, daily duration of computer use, neck pain at rest, and NBQ (p = 0.043, p = 0.043, p = 0.031 and p = 0.003, respectively). NBQ was identified as the most influential variable in this model, followed by neck pain at rest.

Conclusions: Temporomandibular disorders are common among desk-bound engineers and are associated with neck pain, disability, and neck awareness. For this reason, it is important to take preventive and protective ergonomic approaches at the personal and institutional levels in desk-bound engineers.

Background: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is commonly associated with multiple musculoskeletal impairments.

Objective: The purpose of this review was (1) to investigate the effectiveness of LLLT plus ET on pain, ROM, muscle strength, and function in KOA immediately after therapy and (2) whether the effectiveness of LLLT plus ET could be sustained at follow-up (4 - 32 weeks).

Methods: Six databases were systematically searched upto December 2021 to find relevant articles. Included studies were RCTs written in English, which compared LLLT plus ET with placebo LLLT plus ET in KOA. Three independent reviewers extracted data and assessed the quality of included studies. Standard mean difference (SMD) was used in meta-analysis using random effect model.

Result: Of the 6307 articles, 14 RCTs (820 patients) met the inclusion criteria. The results demonstrated that there was a significant difference in pain immediately after therapy (SMD: -0.58, p = 0.001) and at follow-up (SMD: -1.35, p = 0.05) in LLLT plus ET group. There were no significant differences in knee ROM, muscle strength, and knee function outcomes immediately and at follow-up.

Conclusion: Our findings indicate that LLLT plus ET could be considered to alleviate pain in the KOA. LLLT reduces pain at 4-8J with a wavelength of 640-905nm per point applied for 10-16 sessions at a frequency of 2 sessions/week. An exercise therapy program at prescribed dosage involving major muscle groups might help. However, LLLT plus ET is no more effective than placebo LLLT plus ET in improving ROM, muscle strength, and function in KOA.

Purpose: Although Kinesio Taping has been extensively used, evidence about the effect of Kinesio Taping is still insufficient. The aim is to determine the effect of Kinesio Taping on elbow joint torque and muscle activity in time and frequency domains.

Materials and methods: Thirty-eight healthy subjects were (27 females and 11 males) randomly divided into control and Kinesio Taping groups. Kinesio Taping was applied over biceps brachii muscle in Kinesio Taping group, whereas no taping was applied to control group. Maximum elbow joint torque and electromyography activity in time and frequency domains were assessed during maximum isometric contraction of biceps brachii muscle at baseline, after 10 min, 30 min, and 24 h. Repeated measure ANOVA and mixed ANOVA tests were used for in-group and between-group comparisons, respectively.

Results: Elbow joint torques among four assessment sessions were statistically altered in Kinesio Taping group and greater in Kinesio Taping group than in control group (F(3,57)= 3.317, p = 0.026, ηp2 = 0.149; F(3,108)=3.325, p = 0.022, ηp2 = 0.085; respectively). No difference was found in time domain muscle activity among assessment sessions in each group and comparison of groups (p > 0.05). Low-gamma band activity was changed among assessment sessions in Kinesio Taping group (F(3,57)= 6.946, p < 0.001, ηp2 = 0.268) while group × time interaction was not determined.

Conclusions: Kinesio Taping may influence joint torque of elbow more than without Kinesio Taping condition in 24th hour but the interpretation of this effect as a muscle strength enhancement compared with baseline can be arguable. Even if Kinesio Taping could not affect muscle activity in time domain, low-gamma band activity which is closely related to somatosensorial input may reach highest magnitude 24 h after Kinesio Taping.

Purpose: The present study aimed to evaluate the postural balance of young tennis players and young swimming practitioners in static and dynamic conditions.

Methods: Thirty-six children (5-6 years old) participated in 3 groups: 12 tennis players, 12 swimming practitioners and 12 controls. Static and dynamic [in medial lateral (ML) and anterior posterior (AP) planes] postural balance were assessed by the centre of pressure sways using a stabilometric force platform in the eyes opened (EO) and eyes closed (EC) conditions.

Results: In the EO condition, swimming practitioners and tennis players had a significantly lower (p < 0.05) centre of pressure mean velocity (CoPVm) compared to controls in both static and dynamic medial-lateral (D-ML) postures. In the D-ML posture, swimming practitioners showed lower CoPVm compared to tennis players. However, in the EC condition, only the swimming practitioners showed better static and D-ML postural balance (p < 0.05) compared to their counterparts. In the static posture, the Romberg index value was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in tennis players compared to the two other groups.

Conclusion: Tennis players developed a higher reliance on vision to maintain balance, whereas swimming practitioners were more stable in challenging postural conditions. Clinicians should consider incorporating swimming training rather than tennis as an appropriate balance training in fall-prevention programs.

Background: Dual-task designs have been used to study the degree of automatic and controlled processing involved in postural balance. The aim of the present study was to explore postural balance performance during dual-task condition in children with intellectual disability compared to those with typical development.

Methods: Fifteen children with intellectual disability aged from 7 to 12 years old and fifteen age-matched children with typical development participated in this study. Participants were asked to maintain static balance on a force platform during a baseline condition (single task) and while performing the Picture Recognition Memory Test (dual-task condition).

Results: The results showed that dual-task similarly affects postural performance of both typically developing children and those with intellectual disability (p < .001).

Conclusions: Children with intellectual disability and children with typical development have difficulties in maintaining their balance when carrying out a concurrent cognitive task. Intellectual disability did not lead to a more strongly compromised balance performance in dual-task situation.

Purpose/aim: The aim of this study was to determine the acute effects of IASTM on cervical joint position error and pain in individuals with chronic neck pain.

Methods: A total of 39 individuals with chronic neck pain were included in this study. Participants were randomized into three groups: Instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization(IASTM (n = 13), sham (n = 13), and control (n = 13). In the IASTM group, intervention was applied to the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles with an application time of 45 s and a frequency of 60 beats/min. In the sham group, IASTM was applied at a 90° angle without pressure. The control group did not receive any intervention. The pain severity and joint position error(JPE) were evaluated before and after the intervention, by using the visual analogue scale and a cervical range of motion device.

Results: The effects of time and treatment group on visual analogue scale(VAS) score were statistically significant (p = .001). Instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization was more effective in VAS score than sham and control group (p < .001). Significant improvement was found in JPE in all range of motions of the cervical region in the instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization group (p < .05). In the sham group, significant improvements were observed in cervical extension, left rotation, and left lateral flexion movements in JPE during each cervical spine active movement (p < .05). Instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization group was more effective in JPE all directions than sham and control group.

Conclusions: Instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization may be a useful technique in individuals with chronic neck pain. Instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization decreases VAS and improves JPE.

Clinical trial registration number: NCT04882397 (05 August 2021).

临床试验注册号:NCT04882397(2021年8月5日)。

Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the rapid and unprecedented reorganisation of current practices in the treatment of neuromuscular disorders (NMD). Cessation of care and treatments can worsen the underlying condition, exacerbate symptoms, and increase anxiety, leading to a vicious circle and increased management concerns. This study aims to determine the changes in healthcare and health status of children with NMD from a developing country perspective.

Materials and methods: Forty-seven children with NMD were included in this cross-sectional study. The participants were contacted via phone call. The survey conducted for the study was included demographic data, changes and problems in healthcare, perceived health status change, and satisfaction with the services provided. Descriptive statistics were used to characterise the sample.

Results: The mean age of the children was 7.86 ± 3.45 years. The participants encountered 24.83 ± 26.54% of difficulties in getting medication care, and there was 69.95 ± 24.47% disruption in accessing routine medical care. The participants' rehabilitation sessions were disrupted in the 78.54 ± 14.93%, and there were 95.83 ± 10.03% deficiencies in therapists' informing. Children with NMD indicated that their perceived health status decreased compared to before pandemic in all parameters.

Conclusion: This study highlights the unfavourable indirect effect of the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions on healthcare and health status of paediatric patients with NMD. Since the COVID-19 pandemic is an uncertain process, the solutions or modifications should be promptly put into effect to improve the healthcare and health status of children with NMD.

Purpose: Biodex Balance System (BBS) is a low-cost platform used to assess balance in different populations. However, no study has used this tool to evaluate the risk of falls related to balance changes in non-faller individuals with Parkinson Disease (PD).

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the changes in the balance in non-faller individuals with mild to moderate PD compared to healthy elders.

Methods: Forty-six PD patients at stages 2 and 3 were assessed in the 'on' state (fully medicated) as well as 31 age-matched healthy controls. They were submitted to the fall risk protocol of BBS and performed three 20-s trials and a 60-s rest interval between the trials.

Results: Non-faller PD patients had an increased instability when compared to the healthy controls in the anteroposterior (controls: 1.54 ± 1.00 vs. PD patients: 2.91 ± 0.93) and mediolateral directions (controls: 1.21 ± 0.57 vs. PD patients: 1.42 ± 0.46), resulting in a great overall instability in the PD patients (controls: 1.28 ± 0.61 vs. PD patients: 4.09 ± 1.22). A significant correlation between overall instability and UPDRS-III (motor symptoms) in individuals with PD was observed.

Conclusion: BBS was able to identify the risk of falls in non-fallers, showing that PD patients have a greater risk of falls in unstable conditions than age-matched healthy elders, mainly due to the large sway in the anteroposterior direction. Furthermore, the severity of motor symptoms was related to overall instability which can increase the risk of falls in PD patients.

Purpose: To compare mothers' report on children's pain with patients' own reports and to explore the prevalence, intensity, localisation and the effect of pain on daily living activities of adolescents with CP.

Materials and methods: A total of 75 adolescent with CP (34 females and 41 males) and their mothers were included in this cross-sectional study. Demographical and clinical characteristics were recorded. The adolescent and the mother independently completed the pain questionnaire in a face-to-face interview administrated by a physiatrist.

Results: The prevalance of pain in the previous week was 28% by self report and was 40% by mothers' report. No significant difference was determined between mother's report and self report (p = 0.121). There was no significant difference in the prevalence of pain, pain intensity, and the effect of pain on activities of daily living according to Gross Motor Functional Classification System levels and CP types in terms of mothers' report and self report.

Conclusions: Pain is a common condition in adolescents with CP and it affects quality of life negatively. While the self-report of pain is ideal, parent's reports in various situations is important for the assessment of pain.
