Background: Nutrient restriction is a common strategy to prevent metabolic disorders in fast growing 35 broiler chickens, but limited information is available regarding the impact of low protein and energy 36 diets in leg abnormalities. Objective: Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of 37 varying dietary crude protein (CP) and metabolizable energy (ME) levels on gastrocnemius tendon 38 (GTeBS) and tibia (TiBS) breaking strength, gait score (GS) and valgus/varus angulation (VAng). 39 Methods: In experiment 1, eight-d-old Ross 308 broilers (n=90) were randomly assigned into three 40 treatments: 13/2,900 (13% CP and 2,900 kcal ME kg -1 of diet), 17/3,000 (17% CP and 3,000 kcal ME 41 kg -1 of diet), and 21/3,025 or control (21% CP and 3,025 kcal ME kg -1 of diet). In experiment 2, six- d-old Ross 308 chickens (n=192) were randomly distributed into two treatments: 16/3,000; 16% CP 43 and 3,000 kcal ME kg -1 of diet and 21/3,000 or control; 21% CP and 3,000 kcal ME kg -1 of diet. In 44 both experiments, the data were analyzed as one-way ANOVA. Results: In experiment 1, broilers in 45 the 17/3,000 and control treatments had similar (p>0.05) GTeBS (202 and 224 N, respectively), and 46 TiBS (338 and 332 N, respevtively). Birds in the 13/2,900 treatment showed higher GS (lower 47 walking ability; 80% of birds with score>3), and greater VAng (53% of birds with score>2) than 48 broilers in the control treatment (0% of birds with GS score>3 and 0% of birds with VAng score>2). 49 Experiment 2, broilers in the 16/3,000 showed similar VAng, GS and TiBS than birds in the control 50 treatment. However, birds in the 16/3,000 treatment showed lower (-26%) GTeBS than birds in the 51 control treatment (p<0.05). Conclusions: Feeding broilers with 16% CP and 3,000 kcal ME kg -1 of 52 diet did not affect tibia breaking strength, gait score and valgus/varus angulation. A diet containing 53 16% CP or less and 2,900-3,000 kcal ME kg -1 reduces tendon and tibia breaking strength.
39方法:在实验1中,将8日龄Ross 308肉鸡(n=90)随机分为三个40个处理:13/2900(13%CP和2900 kcal ME kg-1日粮)、17/3000(17%CP和3000 kcal ME 41 kg-1)和21/3025或对照(21%CP和3025 kcal ME kg-1日日粮)。 结果:在试验1中,45只17/3000和对照组肉鸡的GTeBS(分别为202和224 N)和46只TiBS(分别为338和332 N)相似(p>0.05)。13/2900处理中的鸟类表现出比对照处理中的48只肉鸡更高的GS(较低的47行走能力;得分>3的鸟类中有80%)和更大的VAng(得分>2的鸟类的53%)(GS得分>3和VAng得分>2)。

Effect of the percentage of Bos taurus inheritance on the 41 fertility of Holstein x Zebu and Brown Swiss x Zebu crossbred cows in the Mexican tropics. Rev Colomb Abstract reproduction. Objective: To assess the effect of the proportion of Bos taurus (Bt) genes 51 on the reproductive performance of Holstein × Zebu (HZ) and Brown Swiss × Zebu (BZ) 52 crossbred cows, and to compare the reproductive performance of these genotypes in a 53 dual-purpose production system. Methods: Cows were maintained in a rotational grazing 54 system on African Star grass ( Cynodon plectostachyus ) in Veracruz, Mexico. Cows were 55 milked twice daily. Calves were kept tied on one side of their dams, while the cows were 56 milked. Results: Percentage of Bt genes did not affect (p>0.05) any fertility trait (age at 57 first calving, days to first service after calving, services per conception, first service 58 conception rate, days open until conception, gestation length and calving interval) of BZ 59 cows. In contrast, HZ cows with less than 75% of Holstein (H) genes were 0.3 years 60 younger (p<0.05) at first calving and had 39.8 fewer days open (p<0.05) than HZ cows 61 with 75% or more of H genes. In addition, the calving interval of HZ cows with less than 62 75% of H genes was 44.8 days shorter (p<0.05) than that of HZ cows with 75% or more 63 of H genes. HZ cows had five fewer days pregnant and were 22.8 kg heavier at calving 64 (p<0.05) than BZ cows. Conclusions: The effect of the percentage of Bt genes on cow 65 fertility depended on the dairy breed used. In general, BZ and HZ cows had similar 66 reproductive performance.

Background: Buffalo breeding has significantly increased in Brazil over recent years. However, few genetic evaluations have been conducted. Objective: To assess Genotype x Environment Interactions in the Mediterranean Water Buffalo in Brazil, for weight at 205 days of age, using reaction norm models via random regression. Methods: Data for buffaloes born between 1990 and 2014 were collected from five farms ascribed to the Brazilian Buffaloe Improvement Program, located in the North (1), Northeast (1), South (2) and Southeast (1) regions of Brazil. The initial database consisted of 5,280 observations at 205 days of age (W205). We assessed fit using two hierarchical reaction norm models: a two-step (HRNM2s) and a one-step (HRNM1s). Model fit was estimated using the Deviance Information Criterion, Deviance Based on Bayes Factors and Deviance based on Conditional Predictive Ordinate. The environmental descriptors were created to group individuals into common production environments based on year, season, herd and sex. Results: The best fit was obtained for the hierarchical reaction norm model with one-step (HRNM1s). Direct heritability estimates for this model ranged from 0.17 to 0.67 and the maternal heritability from 0.02 to 0.11 with increasing environmental gradient. Lower correlations among the sire classifications were obtained in comparison with HRNM1s in environments with low and high management, confirming the presence of genotype x environment interactions. Conclusion: We recommend a wider application of genetic evaluation in buffalo aimed at identifying optimal genotypes within specific environments.

Background: Alternative feed ingredients are widely used in swine diets to lower feed costs, but these ingredients contain a large quantity of non-starch polysaccharides. Supplemental xylanase is known to break down non-starch polysaccharides. However, the effects of exogenous xylanase from Bacillus subtilis on various feed ingredients have rarely been compared. Objective: To evaluate the effects of supplemental xylanase on in vitro disappearance of dry matter (DM) in various feed ingredients for pigs. Methods: Nine feed ingredients were used to measure in vitro ileal disappearance and in vitro total tract disappearance of DM. Each ground ingredient was supplemented with either supplemental xylanase (9,000 U/g) or cornstarch at 1.0%. Results: Supplemental xylanase increased in vitro ileal disappearance of DM in wheat, barley, wheat flour, and wheat bran (p<0.05). The in vitro total tract disappearance of DM for barley and wheat bran increased with xylanase addition (p<0.05). Conclusion: Exogenous xylanase could increase in vitro ileal DM disappearance in barley, wheat, wheat flour, and wheat bran, but did not affect in vitro total tract DM disappearance in wheat and wheat flour.
