The article discusses speeches of praise against a historical background spanning from the mid-15th century to the Enlightenment. Next, the genological concepts of eulogies and the genre of laudation recommended in academic life are presented. The latter is characterized using a pragmatic approach. The text of the laudation is interpreted in a social and cultural context.

"In The World, a Moment on Trial" ("Próba chwili świata") Stanisław Swen Czachorowski reaches back to the pre-war literary tradition, to the formula of a love story, and endeavours to capture the experience of a moment, an impression. The same volume contains "The Scene Brought Unto Us" ("Pejzaż doczekany") – a stylized short form in which the author employs well-known means of expression, exaggerating and taking them to extremes. Tracing the changes introduced in successive versions of the text highlights the significance of seemingly minor stylistic decisions that turn out to be crucial for the consistency of its composition. The genetic approach allows for a diligent, close reading of this intricate literary undertaking, dense with symbols and meaning.

The history of Pomerania, like that of many other regions of Poland, is most often presented in the scientific literature in a political context. In the 1990s, Gerard Labuda proposed an alternative approach – the next great synthesis of the history of Pomerania was to focus on one of the ethnic groups living there. Józef Borzyszkowski’s book on the history of the Kashubians in 19th-century Pomerania is a worthy continuation of this idea. The analysis of this publication in the context of the already long-standing methodological discussions concerning the history of Pomerania and, more broadly, regional studies allows one to see new interesting problems and research perspectives.

Andrzej Bursa’s poem Painting Gone Mad (Malarstwo obłąkanego) takes over and sets in motion a machinery of images that are gradually disembodied. The recorded image of the world is superimposed here with the world of delusions and mental “deviations”, deforming all that is subject to poetic intervention and – in the case of other poems – perceived perhaps in terms of existential paradoxes. The psychotic construction of the subject allows the activation of games of imagination, which, in the field of creative possibilities, activate “surreal” images. The perspective of post-human transformations of years ago, technicization, and indeed fantastic, “surrealistic” textualization of borderline states of consciousness (madness, insanity) of a person from a triumphantly and dramatically modernized world is intriguing. The sketch includes interpretive remarks on the poems of Tytus Czyżewski and the text Without the Help of the Physicians by Jan Brzękowski. These works are juxtaposed with Painting Gone Mad due to the common perspective of psychiatric confrontation with the world and “mechanization” and, in the case of the latter poet, the organic-technical experience of the lyrical character.

The article presents the methods and means by which German writer Johannes Bobrowski, in his significant novel Lewin’s Mill. 34 Sentences About My Grandfather (Młyn Lewina. 34 zdania o moim dziadku), seeks to deconstruct and relativize national stereotypes and clichés (established superstitions), with a particular focus on the carnivalizing elements present in the work. Analyzing the novel in the framework of, among others, Bakhtin’s theories of carnival, or more precisely, the aesthetics of carnivalization, I try to highlight the author’s specific approach or attitude to national conflicts on the German and other axes, which are the leitmotiv of his entire oeuvre. The presented sketch is closed, including considerations about the measure of its impact on the audience, and reduced to the cognitive categories of immersion and emersion.

The article is devoted to the use of the achievements of the Polish ethnolinguistic school in the study of feature films. The author believes that the model of cognitive definition, created by Jerzy Bartmiński, can be applied to the analysis of the semantic layer of film media texts. This type of semantic explication is able to encompass and organize not only linguistic data but also information transmitted by means of other semiotic systems. The author tries to prove this using the example of a cognitive definition of the cinematic conceptual category of a BADYLARZ (‘owner of a horticulture business’). The research material consists of crime films made during the Polish People’s Republic period.
