Although the importance of digital technology in fostering cross-boundary innovation (CBI) has attracted increasing attention from scholars and practitioners, research gaps persist concerning how firms’ capabilities in leveraging digital technologies influence CBI and the boundary conditions that either facilitate or impede its effectiveness. Based on firm capability theory, this study distinguishes firms’ digital ambidextrous capabilities to achieve different digital goals from an organisational ambidexterity perspective. Using fixed effects and interaction effects models to analyse data from 730 publicly listed Chinese firms, this investigation explores the roles of digital exploratory capability (DERC) and digital exploitative capability (DEIC) in enhancing CBI. The results indicate that DERC and DEIC substantially foster CBI. Technological diversification acts as a positive moderator in the relationship between DERC and CBI, whilst exhibiting an inverted U-shaped moderation between DEIC and CBI. Furthermore, environmental turbulence moderates the relationship between DERC and CBI in an inverted U-shape and positively moderates the relationship between DEIC and CBI. Additionally, SOEs are more reliant on DEIC for CBI and less susceptible to environmental turbulence. This study provides new managerial insights for firms to establish and leverage digital ambidextrous capabilities to achieve CBI.

<div><div>Technological change presents significant challenges for organizations and society and needs to be understood from a socio-technical perspective. Technology and Innovation Management (TIM) can play a crucial role in understanding disruptive change. Smart farming technologies (SFTs) are used as prime examples for disruption in a traditional industry. This paper shows how scholars can use TIM theories to contribute to a better understanding and subsequent recommendations for action. We review 973 articles using bibliographic coupling to synthesize existing literature. We identify the most prominent research themes and problematize the existing narratives in light of three theoretical approaches to technological change: evolutionary economics, social construction of technology, and actor-network theory. Finally, we present theory-driven questions for future research that indicate new directions for TIM. We comprehensively review and synthesize existing research at the intersection of smart farming technologies and the TIM domain, using bibliographic coupling to identify prominent research themes, highlight blind spots, and generate questions for future research. To counter the common shortcomings of systematic literature reviews in general (Alvesson and Sandberg, 2020) and trending automated literature reviews, we supplement our analysis with an extensive explorative-qualitative discussion of the results, linking our findings back to theory and deriving a comprehensive set of research questions for future research. We build upon Bruun and Hukkinens’ (2003) Integrative Framework for Studying Technological Change to guide our discussion and expand our critical review. Thus, we make three main contributions. First, we give a curated and comprehensive overview of articles on SFT and technological change to identify the theoretical deficiencies that lead to oversimplified assumptions regarding the dissemination of smart farming technologies. Second, we enrich the TIM literature by applying three established theories of technological change in a particular sector, making the connection between a specific domain of technological application (SFT) and established theories in the technology and innovation management field. Third, by detailing the extent to which the three theories help us understand the existing literature and discussing it in its entire complexity, we identify several blind spots of current research and derive research questions for future research in both, the SFT and the TIM field. This approach opposes a technology-deterministic and simplistic view of technological developments. By doing so, we aim to inspire TIM scholars to use theories that sharpen their understanding of the socio-technical system and the complexity of technological change.

The digitalization of cultural and creative industries has often followed a path of convergence between physical and digital artefacts, leading to the rise of digital platforms that reshape value chains. However, the cultural heritage sector has undergone a different form of digital transformation. Digital platforms in this field create a “phygital” experience that blends tradition with innovation. This study examines the role of digital platforms in fostering social and economic development in the cultural heritage sector, focusing on Google Arts & Culture, launched by Google in 2011. Through a longitudinal case study, we explore how digital platforms create value for multiple stakeholders—museums, users, and the platform itself—by enhancing efficiency, complementarities, novelty, and lock-in mechanisms. Our findings indicate that digital platforms introduce a more dynamic and complex ecosystem that drives growth and innovation while shifting cultural organizations from integrated supply chains to networks of strategic partnerships. The success of digital platforms in promoting social and economic development depends on museums’ ability to internalize legacy knowledge and platforms’ capacity to reinterpret this knowledge using advanced digital tools. This research contributes to the literature on innovation and strategic management by demonstrating that, rather than disrupting tradition, digital platforms enhance the cultural heritage experience. Additionally, while platforms like Google Arts & Culture operate under a non-profit model to democratize culture, they capture significant value through data aggregation, which may play a key role in training artificial intelligence systems.

In this study, we focus on two significant sources of a firm’s external knowledge—geographic clusters and strategic alliances—and examine whether a firm’s technological capability influences the effectiveness of these two sources of knowledge for firm innovation performance in different ways. We theorize that clusters and alliances differ in their knowledge flow mechanisms, leading to varying roles of internal technological capability. Specifically, we argue that a firm’s capability is more crucial for absorbing and integrating knowledge from clusters, where information flows in a fragmented form through informal channels. Furthermore, firms are less concerned about knowledge loss due to the nature and pattern of knowledge flows in clusters. In contrast, in alliances, where knowledge flow is more integrated and structured, technologically capable firms are generally more concerned about knowledge loss, which adversely affects reciprocity and, consequently, the flow of knowledge between partners. Moreover, since knowledge in alliances is transferred through structured mechanisms, the advantages of high internal capability in absorbing and integrating partner knowledge become less significant. Using 15 years of longitudinal data from the U.S. semiconductor industry—a sector characterized by innovation, strategic alliances, and clustering tendencies—we find that technologically stronger firms derive greater innovation benefits from clusters in enhancing the value of their innovations. In contrast, technologically weaker firms gain more from strategic alliances. Overall, our study supports our hypotheses and provides a nuanced understanding of how internal technological capability operates differently in leveraging external knowledge from clusters versus alliances.

This paper, drawing on the upper echelon theory, examines the relationship between the existence and degree of gender diversity in top management teams (TMTs) with firm’s innovation performance, using a sample of 1.808 Spanish manufacturing firms. We follow a two-step multivariate analysis distinguishing between product and process innovation and comparing family and non-family. Our findings show a positive relationship between gender diversity and process innovation, and a U-shaped relationship between the degree of gender diversity and product innovation in family firms, but not in non-family firms.

Business ecosystems serve as a critical platform for firms to accumulate innovation resources, co-create value with stakeholders, and achieve innovation outcomes. Strengthening ecosystem governance can mitigate issues like "free-riding" and optimize the overall functioning of the ecosystem. Enhancing digital innovation performance through effective ecosystem governance has become a key strategy for complementary firms seeking innovation and growth. This study investigates how complementary firms within business ecosystems adapt to governance mechanisms to boost digital innovation performance. A survey of 684 complementary firms within the business ecosystem was conducted, with multiple regression analysis applied to examine the impact of ecosystem governance on digital innovation performance from the complementary firms' perspective. The analysis also explores the mediating role of digital capabilities and the moderating effect of technological dynamism. The findings indicate that: (1) both contractual and relational governance positively and significantly influence digital innovation performance; (2) digital perceptual capabilities and digital resource coordination capabilities mediate the relationship between ecosystem governance and digital innovation performance of complementary firms; (3) technological dynamism negatively moderates the relationship between contractual governance and digital capabilities, but does not influence the relationship between relational governance and digital capabilities. This research advances the understanding of the relationship between ecosystem governance and digital innovation performance in the context of the digital economy, offering insights from the perspective of complementary firms and highlighting the complex mechanisms through which ecosystem governance affects their digital innovation outcomes. The conclusions provide practical implications for complementary firms aiming to enhance their digital innovation performance within the digital economy.

This paper investigates the critical success factors influencing technology roadmapping within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Since this type of analysis is resource-intensive, SMEs often need to join in clusters coordinated by an intermediary. By conducting a comprehensive literature review and longitudinal case studies, we propose the “Framework of Technology Roadmapping in SMEs clusters”. This innovative framework identifies and categorizes 19 critical success factors, organizing them into six main areas: organization (motivation and management), intelligence ability (resources and competences), and process management (architecture and method). These six areas collectively represent the primary parameters and levers essential for the design and implementation of technology roadmapping activities in SMEs clusters. By addressing these factors, SMEs clusters can more effectively navigate technological advancements, align their strategies with future market demands, and sustain competitive advantage. The framework not only serves as a guide for SMEs and SMEs clusters embarking on technology roadmapping but also provides a foundation for further research and refinement in this critical area of literature.

The rapid advancement of digital technology has enabled the emergence of virtual influencers (VIs), who are being considered for their potential impact across various sectors, including the public sector and place branding. This study examines the integration of VIs into municipal branding, offering a novel perspective on the role of digital transformation in public-sector communication strategies. A content analysis of 262 cases sourced from various digital media was conducted to explore the potential and limitations of VIs in enhancing city images and engaging citizens. The findings highlight two main advantages of adopting VIs, which align with modern communication demands: their flexibility and innovative capabilities. However, significant challenges such as high production costs and concerns over authenticity and genuine engagement pose critical risks. This study further delves into the classification of VIs as “hyperreal capital,” expanding traditional categorizations of municipal assets to include digital and virtual elements. These insights are critical in redefining strategic public management and place branding, suggesting practical applications for digital personas in urban branding initiatives. This analysis serves as a foundational exploration, encouraging further investigation into the tangible and intangible impacts of VIs on municipal branding. We propose a new theoretical framework for understanding the role of digital innovation in public communication, providing a basis for future studies.

This paper constructs a conceptual framework combining social network theory, knowledge base view, and absorptive capacity theory to investigate how elite community dynamics interact with internal/external knowledge search strategies in shaping community-level innovation outputs. Employing longitudinal patent data from China's energy-saving sector, we empirically demonstrate the nonlinear relationship between community dynamic and overall innovation outputs. Internal knowledge search moderates this nonlinear effect, whereas external cross-community search fails to produce multiplicative innovation gains. By highlighting the dualistic nature of knowledge boundaries, this work advances theoretical understanding community-based innovation mechanisms and offer practical guidelines for optimizing elite community governance through balanced dynamics.
