The impact of freezing and chilling on the semen of FUNAAB Alpha (Normal feather) chickens was examined in this study. Pooled semen collected from ten FUNAAB Alpha (Normal feather) chicken were diluted with Tris –based extender. Diluted semen was divided into two fraction, the first fraction was subjected to chilling at 4oC and the second fraction was subjected to freezing at 1oC for 24hrs. Thereafter semen were evaluated for viability, functional integrity and oxidative stress (Malondialdehyde concentrations MDA and seminal leukocytes). The result showed a consistent variation in the viability and functional integrity. However, Sperm motility and livability preserved at 4oC was significantly higher (p<0.05) than those preserved at 1oC. Abnormal sperm (head, mid piece and tail) recorded for those preserved at 4oC was significantly lower (p<0.05) than those preserved at 1oC. The findings indicate that sperm viability, functional integrities and oxidative stress parameters of FUNAAB alpha (Normal feather) were better preserved by chilling compared to freezing method.

This study was conducted to determine the effect of cowpea hay and groundnut haulms supplementation on rumen characteristics of Yankasa rams. The experiment involved Sixteen (16) growing Yankasa rams weighing 20.19 ± 2.2 kg randomly assigned to four treatment groups: Rice straw (I), groundnut haulms (II), cowpea hay (III) and combination of cowpea and groundnut haulms supplementations (IV). The experiment was laid in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four (4) replications for a period of 84 days. The rumen liquor (15 ml) was drawn individually from the experimental animals. The rumen pH and microbial populations were determined using standard procedures. Data obtained were analyzed using Analysis of Variance with Duncan’s New Multiple Range Test used to separate significant means at 5% level. The results obtained revealed significant difference (P≤0.05) among the treatments in terms of pH and microbial counts. Treatment I had the least acidic value (6.29) at four hours after feeding. Treatment II had highest microbial counts (5.87 x106cfu/ml for bacteria and 4.26x105 cfu/ml for fungal counts) after 4 hours of feeding. The result inferred that supplementing basal rice straw with cowpea hay and groundnut haulms maintained the quality of rumen’s fluid pH of Yankasa rams. There was sufficient number of bacterial and fungal species in the rumen fluid for fibre degradation which aid digestibility and rumen fermentation. Thus, it is recommended that, cowpea hay and groundnut haulm be fed at 300g/day to growing Yankasa rams to enhance growth performance.

The study analysed the training needs of Women in Agriculture (WIA) extension officers in Kano State, Nigeria. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to purposively select two local government areas (LGAs) from the three agro-ecological zones in Kano based on the intensity of the WIA officers, making a total of six LGAs for the study. From the six LGAs, 74 WIA officers were randomly selected for the study. Data were collected through the use of structured questionnaires and analysed using frequency counts, percentages, and the mean. Results revealed that the average age of the women was 34 years, 56.8% were married, and the average household size was 9 people. 50.0% of the respondents had secondary school education and averaged 8 years of working experience as extension agents. The study further revealed that the majority of the women (95.9%) received training on crop production technology and (64.9%) on marketing agricultural commodities. It was also revealed that the WIA needs training on livestock production and disease control, ICT in agriculture, and fish farming. Conclusively, WIA officers competently perform their job in the demonstration of improved technologies and the dissemination of information. It is therefore recommended that women extension officers be trained and provided with training facilities based on their requirements.
