Sainthood and its manifestations are a subject that has become fundamental when doing cultural studies of the colony in Latin America; it is through the construction of saintly figures that we can identify social desires and diverse ethnic, class and gender tensions, but we can also encounter much more hybrid and fluid spaces. This essay, part of my doctoral dissertation, presents catholic sainthoods in the Viceroyalty of Peru, through the cases of Santa Rosa de Lima and San Martin de Porras. By studying mysticism, my proposal aims to think saintly figures as queer subjects, that is to say, as subjects who challenged, altered and questioned colonial structures.

e question about the relationship between non-human agents and the novel as a genre denes current debates about literature and its relationship with the Anthropocene (Ghosh and Nixon, for example.) is article argues that this relationship must be thought fundamentally around the notions of temporality and scale as critical tools to describe the ways in which the novel, putting in tension its own generic matrices, opens up to perspectives, actants, and processes irreducible to the norm of the human. e narrative of Colombian writer Juan Cárdenas offers formal models that allow us to analyze the relationship with the non-human in the contemporary novel. His focus on processes of natural extraction, and his work on silenced memories of Colombian and Latin American culture, allow him to explore narrative forms that harbor the non-human in their own temporalities. is investigation, at the same time, illuminates new terrain for a politics of literature that opens it to new imaginaries of the collective.

In this article, I read Beatriz Sarlo ́s Tiempo pasado: Cultura de la memoria y giro subjetivo. Una discusión in the context of new scholarship in cultural memory studies, that proposes its transgenerational perdurability both at the a social and the collective level. I propose that Sarlo criticizes the personal voice of the “subjective turn” by deploying her own predilections, and therefore interrupting the discourses she purports to analyze. Sarlo ́s critique of the subjective turn is therefore carried out within her own subjectivity, inviting a question that echoes her own: what is the place of the rst person singular in the narration of the recent past?

is paper develops a critical reading of Viajes. De la Amazonia a las Malvinas which focuses on the evaluation of Beatriz Sarlo’s autobiographical rhetoric, the ways in which her testimonial writing articulates narration and essay, personal experience and knowledge. On the one hand, it reconstructs the strategies of self-guration that aim to sustain the image of the author as a moralist who exercises criticism of contemporary customs (those of tourism as a practice of mass culture, in general, and those of “ideological tourism” that young Latin Americans practiced towards the end of the 1960s and beginning of the 1970s, in specic). On the other hand, it evaluates the success of the means by which Sarlo is able to transcend the narcissism typical of autobiographical remembrance: the theoretical framework (centered on the concept-value of “programme leap”), the essayistic experimentation with the styles of presentation (those of travel narratives and those of ideological criticism) and the search for a nuanced tone, able to transmit the coexistence of heterogeneous affections without inhibiting the possibility of a return to the past in the present as a process still in progress.

is paper has selected Beatriz Sarlo’s more than eighty articles, reviews and debate interventions published in Punto de Vista magazine as a text corpus for analysis. In order to organize said corpus, we have divided it into four sections: 1) Argentinian literature: e past; 2) Argentinian literature: e present; 3) intellectuals; 4) literary theory, cultural theory. All the sections comprise reviews of the articles and seek to propose, for each case, a set of interpretative hypotheses.

is essay systematizes Beatriz Sarlo’s nineteenth-century Argentinean literature approaches, which are part of a broader critical project focused on the twentieth century, particularly on the rst decades, that she has extended at least to the present century. e central hypothesis is that Sarlo’s insistence on examining the founding moment of Argentinean literature and the work and gure of writers such as Sarmiento and Echeverría is due to her intention to nd a rst modernizing moment before the cultural modernity she observes in her classic work Una modernidadperiférica. Buenos Aires 1920 y 1930 (1988). Furthermore, the essay aims to explore Sarlo’s initial study about Juan María Gutiérrez in relation to a literary history narrated from a modern perspective but also concerning her position as a critic.
