The Greater Short-toed Lark Calandrella brachydactyla is a migrant bird, considered of conservation concern, but poorly studied in Italy about his breeding ecology and habitat use. In this work, we aimed to study both of these components in the airfield of Fano (Central Italy, Marches, Pesaro-Urbino province). The study, relating to the 2018-2022 reproductive seasons, describes the nesting habitat used by the species, providing also data about the plants on which the species feed on. We hypothsized the importance of the choice of fenced areas for the less predation and we highlighted the presences of young helpers in the feeding of the second brood. Furthermore, we observed the formation of crèches for the young fledglings, controlled by some adult males. It’s confirmed here a semi-colonial condition that leading to the formation of extra-family groups before migration. The study area turns out to be the main reproductive colony of the species in the Marches region, with an average density of 1.5 pairs per 10 ha (maximum 2.4), one of the best know in central Italy.

Mapping breeding birds in a re-naturalized historical fortress: composition, structure and considerations about abundance vs. biomass comparisons

Using the mapping method, I obtained data about a rich, even and diversified breeding bird assemblage inhabiting an abandoned and re-naturalized historical military fortress (Rome, central Italy). Fortress and the surrounding parks host a large number of edge-mosaic, forest and synanthropic species (often localized at urban scale as Dendrocopos minor and Columba palumbus) due to a large availability of many sub-habitats and related niches (walls, cavities, tree holes, mature trees, mowed meadows, hedgerows, and deep moats). In this regard, this historical site may be considered a “key-stone structure” at the landscape scale (i.e., a mature forest/rocky patch embedded in an agromosaic suburban mosaic). The application of the Abundance/Biomass Comparison (ABC) evidenced a dominant role of large body mass species. The underlying logic behind this approach assumes that, generally, in less disturbed environments species with higher trophic level (and higher body mass) dominate: the increase in frequency of these larger species induce early cumulating biomass curves. However, in our anthropized case study, this assumption seems not valid since many large body mass species (as Columba livia dom., Psittacula krameri and Corvus cornix) show a low trophic level (e.g. granivorous or homnivorous): i.e. body mass is not an indicator of trophic level. Therefore, the pattern reported by ABC curves evidence only a dominance of large body mass species without implications on the trophic level and, consequently, on the disturbance acting on the assemblage. In this regard, assumptions linked to the ABC curves are probably not universal but only limited to specific taxa and contexts.

Since the first successful nesting of bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) in the Piedmont region, which took place in the Lanzo Valleys in the province of Turin during the 2018-2019 breeding season, with the fledging of the juvenile named “Belavrì” (W288), three other juveniles fledged in the following years at the same nesting site: “Maurich” (W365), “Chateaux” (W413) and “Eolo” (W490). Thus, the number of successful breedings in this area increased to 4 from the beginning of the international reintroduction project and we note the exceptional young age of the female during the first recorded breeding (4cy).

Impact of hay mowing on the Stonechat Saxicola torquatus nestling

The impact of hay mowing on nestling Stonechats Saxicola torquatus was describes and quantified through the feeding activity of adults. Three breeding pairs (6 broods) were monitored. Occurrence of invertebrate taxa in the diet of nestling Stonechats was reported. The feeding frequency differs immediately after hay mowing (reduction up to 73%) to go back up after a few days even hunting different prey. The reduction of the feeding frequency does not appear to have affected reproductive success for the breeding pairs at least when the hay mowing takes place in limited and protected areas. The diet composition change with increasing nestling age, spiders and ants increase during the first days.

A case of early breeding of Pied Avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta) 早期繁殖鶺鴒(Recurvirostra avosetta)的案例

On the 14th of April 2022, during a periodic bird monitoring activity in a wetland area located in the municipality of Mirandola (Moedna), Northern Italy, a breeding pair of Pied Avocets Recurvirostra avosetta, were recorded along with chicks aged approximately 2/3 days old. This is clearly a case of extremely early breeding seeing as, in Italy, Pied Avocets lay eggs from late April to June, based on adequate weather and environmental conditions. As for this specific case, an estimated cause of such anticipated breeding may be the previous very mild Winter months with little rainfall as well as the breeding ground offering shelter from predators.

Audouin’s Gull colonized Apulia region, SE Italy, around 1990. Regular surveys were performed since 2016, revealing an increase in the number of breeding sites and population size. The top value was reached in 2020, when a new colony, representing the most important settlement in the Adriatic Sea as well as in the entire eastern basin of the Mediterranean has been discovered near Brindisi. This settlement hosted a maximum of 222 breeding pairs. In 2020-2022, when the coverage was complete, the Apulian population of Audouin’s Gull fluctuated between 339 and 617 breeding pairs and occupied a total of five islands, with an overall production of 703 fledglings. Details are provided in order to enhance the designation of new or enlarged Natura2000 sites.
