Comparison of reported outdoor activities in Florida State Parks among three fitness tracker apps 比较三个健身追踪应用程序在佛罗里达州立公园报告的户外活动

Abstract This research used activity data from three fitness tracker apps (AllTrails, MapMyFitness, Wikiloc) to assess which features of Florida State Parks and their surroundings are associated with the number of hiking, cycling, running, and paddling activities. Key features, such as the density of hiking or cycling trails in and population near parks were associated with increased activity levels across most activity types. Comparison of regression results among apps gave insight into the consistency of app use for each specific outdoor activity type. The study also examined which apps are favored to track specific activities. Comparison to other studies sheds some light on user biases likely caused by analyzing a tech-savvy subgroup of outdoor enthusiasts who have access to mobile tracker apps. Therefore, sport-activity counts obtained from GPS tracker apps should be used with caution or be cross-referenced with other data sources, such as on-site questionnaires, for calibration.

Impact of COVID-19 on vacation recreational walking: Evidence from an urban coastal destination COVID-19对度假休闲步行的影响:来自城市沿海目的地的证据

Abstract This study examined the impact of COVID-19 on recreational walking while on vacation, a relevant activity among tourists especially in urban destinations. We surveyed visitors to Costa Daurada, an urban coastal destination in Catalonia in August 2020. Only 5% of participants reported lower recreational walking levels compared to normal circumstances; 75% reported similar levels; and 20% reported higher levels. Higher recreational walking levels were associated with visiting local amenities or strolling and with a higher level of perceived safety from COVID-19 when walking. Higher perceived overcrowding was associated with less recreational walking. The pandemic may have altered recreational behavior while on vacation in urban settings especially by increasing outdoor activities such as recreational walking. If persistent, such behavioral changes could have relevant implications for both the tourism and recreation sectors and for local policymakers who aim to promote walkability while managing tourist pedestrian flows.

Valuing nature-based recreation in forest areas in Italy: An application of Travel Cost Method (TCM) 重视意大利森林地区的自然娱乐:旅行成本法的应用

Abstract Nature-based recreation provides benefits facilitating social interactions and cohesion, creating job opportunities, and stimulating the local economy. The aim of this study was to assess the recreational economic value of different forest areas considering two aspects: stand features and proximity of the forest to urban areas. An individual Travel Cost Method (TCM) was applied in three study areas in Italy involving 603 visitors in the survey. The results show that in all three case studies the most important forest-based recreational activity carried out by visitors is hiking, followed by picnicking and mountain biking. The TCM estimates a consumer surplus between €7.33 and €17.37 per visit. The key points highlighted by the study are that: managed natural forests have a higher recreational economic value than unmanaged artificial forests; the peri-urban forests are characterized by a higher number of visitors but a lower value per visit than mountain forests.

Birding recreation specialization – A test of the factorial invariance in eight languages 观鸟娱乐专业化——八种语言阶乘不变性的检验

Abstract Birding specialization can be measured alongside a continuum from the beginner to the specialist. The structure of birding specialization has three dimensions: (1) skill/knowledge, (2) behavior, and (3) psychological commitment. We tested the factorial structure and factorial invariance of the birding specialization scale in traditional and simplified Chinese, Finnish, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, and Spanish birders. A total of 2,913 (32% women) birdwatchers participated in this study. In all languages, the hierarchical factorial structure with three sub-factors and one general factor was satisfactory. We found support for configural invariance in all languages, metric invariance in some language comparisons, but no support for scalar invariance. Therefore, the construct can be applied in all languages, but comparisons of means should be done with caution. Further translation should try to seek the same configural invariance, but also aim for metric and scalar invariance.

Military mothering, responsibility, and children’s outdoor risky play: “I do not want my children to be afraid to try things” 军人母亲、责任和孩子的户外冒险游戏:“我不想让我的孩子害怕尝试”

Abstract Mothers more than fathers are discursively produced as responsible for children’s safety. Wives of members in combat arms occupations in the military may have feelings of responsibility for their children’s safety that are shaped through their involvement in military culture. In this research, we examined the feelings of responsibility mothers partnered with members in combat arms occupations have for their children’s safety during outdoor risky play. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 16 mothers and used poststructural feminist theory and feminist methodologies. Our findings indicate military mothers feel responsible for their children’s safety during outdoor risky play, but they resist societal pressures to restrict it. Some of the mothers believed there is an increased pressure on women more than men to provide care for their children, and some expressed that being part of a military culture shaped their feelings of responsibility.

Introduction to theme issue on leisure meanings and mechanisms in East Asia 东亚休闲意义与机制主题议题导论

Historically, the leisure studies field has focused on western meanings of leisure and only recently has it begun to explore other traditions. Thus, the first paper by Zhao and Wu (2022) in this theme issue is a valuable contribution to our understanding of traditional Chinese leisure through an in-depth study of the etymology of Chinese words relevant to leisure as well as the leisure perspectives of Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. While this first paper in this theme issue draws upon etymology, history, philosophy, and religion, the remaining five papers explore current leisure meanings and mechanisms within the East Asia context through social scientific studies, of which one is qualitative and four are quantitative. The qualitative study by Li and Stodolska (2022) examined the meaning and meaning-making mechanism in Chinese conspicuous outbound tourism to understand how tourists constructed and operationalized conspicuous consumption in order to make sense of their subjective travel experience. Tourists personalized their travel experience to signal values consistent with their cultural assets and social identities in order to attain their desired status. In the next paper, also within the Chinese context, Weifei et al. (2022) studied the role and internal mechanism of corporate leisure welfare in alleviating employee burnout and found a significant mitigating effect of leisure welfare upon burnout. Furthermore, employee satisfaction combined with leisure welfare had a significant negative moderating effect on the mechanism of mitigating burnout. Bizen and Ninomiya (2022), based on volunteering as a leisure activity, investigated the mechanisms between motivation, constraints and constraint negotiation that emerge when a person considered whether to volunteer at a full marathon in Japan. Motivation for volunteering stimulated negotiation that led to volunteer activities, but constraints had no effect on negotiation or participation. Shi et al. (2022) analyzed the behavior characteristics and spatiotemporal distribution of multi-day leisure travel in China by group composition. Groups with children or elderly persons preferred driving over rail travel and they tended to travel for longer periods and visit more cities while groups without children or elderly persons chose high-quality tourism resources. In the final paper, based on a survey in Taiwan, Tsaur and Yen (2022) investigated attitudes to leisure time and leisure time use. The Leisure Time Perspective Scale, that was developed to explore perception of time for leisure participation, was found to have seven dimensions: social orientation, persistence, pace preference fit, polychronic orientation, effective organization, time-use meaning, and structured routine.

Furthermore, employee satisfaction combined with leisure welfare had a significant negative moderating effect on the mechanism of mitigating burnout. Bizen and Ninomiya (2022), based on volunteering as a leisure activity, investigated the mechanisms between motivation, constraints and constraint negotiation that emerge when a person considered whether to volunteer at a full marathon in Japan. Motivation for volunteering stimulated negotiation that led to volunteer activities, but constraints had no effect on negotiation or participation. Shi et al. (2022) analyzed the behavior characteristics and spatiotemporal distribution of multi-day leisure travel in China by group composition. Groups with children or elderly persons preferred driving over rail travel and they tended to travel for longer periods and visit more cities while groups without children or elderly persons chose high-quality tourism resources. In the final paper, based on a survey in Taiwan, Tsaur and Yen (2022) investigated attitudes to leisure time and leisure time use. Time perspective of leisure participants: Conceptualization and measurement 休闲参与者的时间观:概念与测量

Abstract Time perspective refers to individuals’ attitude toward leisure time and leisure time use. Although the time perspective has been discussed over the years, the concept and measurement of time perspective in leisure contexts remains scant. This study proposed a construct of leisure time perspective and developed a scale to explore perception of time for leisure participation. Both metropolitan and non-metropolitan populations in Taiwan were surveyed for scale development. The research method started with a literature review and focus-group interviews to identify the initial items. Exploratory factor analysis was performed to facilitate scale purification and factor extraction, and confirmatory factor analysis was performed to validate the structure. The result showed that the leisure time perspective comprised seven dimensions: structured routine, time-use meaning, effective organization, polychronic orientation, pace preference fit, persistence, and social orientation. The theoretical and practical implications of these findings and suggestions for future studies are presented in this study.

Abstract This study aims to reveal the relationship between place attachment, place satisfaction and word-of-mouth communication. The context of the study is a street with emerging cafes in a small city that serves as the most important alternative for locals and visitors to spend their leisure. The data obtained from 443 individuals who participated in the survey were tested through PLS-SEM. The findings indicate that place dependence, place affect, and place social bonding directly influence place satisfaction, which is an important antecedent of word-of-mouth communication. These dimensions of place attachment indirectly affect the word-of-mouth communications of individuals, whereas place identity does not have a direct or indirect effect. Within this context, indirect-only mediation and complementary mediation roles of place satisfaction were discovered. These findings are discussed within the context of the study, and both theoretical and practical contributions are introduced.

Abstract This study explored how different types of daily experiences (leisure activity, eudaimonic behaviors) and select habits and dispositions (neuroticism, dispositional depression, physical activity level), are related to situational well-being (situational depression, immediate positive affect) among older adults from a community center. Six hundred thirty-eight situational experience sampling observations were provided by 19 participants ranging in age from 59 to 81 years (M = 68.68, SD = 7.17). Each participant was signaled on five randomly selected occasions each day for seven consecutive days. Upon receiving a signal, participants completed questionnaires measuring their activity participation and situational well-being at the time of the signal. Significant predictors of situational depression included leisure activity, neuroticism, and physical activity level. For immediate positive affect, leisure activity, eudaimonic behaviors, and dispositional depression were significant predictors. These findings suggest that active leisure participation and engaging in eudaimonic behaviors can promote situational well-being of older adults.

Abstract Leisure is an important developmental context during emerging adulthood because of its inherent freedom, opportunity for challenge, and potential for identity exploration. The nature of leisure is often linked with different developmental pathways surrounding well-being and identity. This quantitative study collected free time perceptions, well-being, and identity measures from college-attending emerging adults (n = 565). Using a clustering approach, participants were grouped based on four free time perceptions measures (awareness, boredom, challenge, distress) and then compared for differences in self-esteem, depression, and identity commitment and exploration. Groupings were named based on unique free time profiles, including mastering, restoring, stagnating, and struggling during free time. Each group had significantly different perceptions of free time awareness and boredom, and groups differed in well-being and identity scores, although not exclusively. Results show the importance of addressing free time perceptions, particularly cognitive (awareness) and affective (boredom) attitudes and inform leisure-based programming and marketing on college campuses.
