Introduction: The purpose of this DNP project was to establish baseline human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination rates, improve baseline knowledge of HPV and HPV vaccines, reduce barriers to HPV vaccination, and increase intention of HPV vaccine uptake among college students.

Methods: A precaution adoption process model-based survey, in-person education session, and posteducation survey were administered to college students in a Midwestern university to measure perceptions of HPV and HPV vaccination as well as to identify barriers to HPV vaccination.

Results: From the preeducation survey to the posteducation survey, correct answers to questions increased, and barriers and misconceptions about HPV and the HPV vaccine decreased, indicating successful education. HPV vaccination intent, defined as indication of "likely" or "very likely" to receive the vaccine on the surveys, rose from 28.0% to 90.7% among participating college students.

Conclusion: This study showed that implementing engaging, in-person HPV prevention education is an effective method for decreasing barriers related to vaccination and increasing vaccination intention.

Abstract: Falls among older adults (OAs) living in retirement homes (RHs) in Canada are a major public health concern due to high morbidity and mortality as well as significant healthcare expenditures. This quality improvement (QI) initiative, conducted for the author's Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project, aimed to decrease fall rates and ED transfers related to falls among OAs in six RHs across the Greater Toronto Area in Ontario, Canada through a multipart intervention with two primary goals. First, the project aimed to facilitate RH NPs' implementation of a comprehensive fall risk assessment and fall prevention strategy in their practice by incorporating the Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths & Injuries (STEADI) toolkit into their armamentarium. Second, it sought to enhance the knowledge of the RHs' registered practical nurses (RPNs), personal support workers (PSWs), and unregulated care providers (UCPs) in assessing fall risk and incorporating fall prevention strategies in their daily practice. By improving NP, RPN, PSW, and UCP knowledge and increasing (by 20%) RPN, PSW, and UCP use of fall prevention strategies, this QI initiative successfully reduced fall rates in the RHs by 40.4%, with no falls requiring transfer to the ED, in the postintervention period. The results of this project highlight the need for an interdisciplinary approach to fall risk reduction in RHs that includes implementation of multifactorial intervention strategies as well as effective organizational policies and procedures for maximum impact.

Abstract: The largest healthcare system in New Mexico, in collaboration with the University of New Mexico College of Nursing, identified an opportunity to increase and retain the number of family practice NPs and certified nurse midwives in rural communities by creating an immersive 1-year rural residency program for newly graduated advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs). This article describes the journey to design this program and build its infrastructure with the aim of addressing the needs of both APRNs during their transition to practice and patients in rural areas, while providing a return on the healthcare system's business investment. Program results are also reported. Program funding was provided by a Health Resources and Services Administration grant, the Presbyterian Healthcare Services executive team, and the Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation.

Abstract: The soaring prevalence of depression and anxiety in children, teenagers, and young adults is now a public health epidemic, yet access to timely evidence-based mental health treatment is often lacking due to a severe shortage of mental health providers. This article provides an overview of the current state of depression and anxiety in children and adolescents as well as first-line evidence-based treatment. The Creating Opportunities for Personal Empowerment (COPE) program, a cognitive-behavioral skills-building intervention, is highlighted as an evidence-based intervention for timely treatment that can be delivered by NPs, physicians, and physician associates/assistants in primary care settings, school-based health centers, and chronic care clinics with reimbursement as well as in schools and universities as a preventive mental health intervention.
